My wife had her interview at the Montreal embassy yesterday. The total time at the embassy was just over two hours. Here's the timeline:
We arrived at 8 AM for her 9:30 interview. There were only two couples in line outside when we got there. Since we had read the forums, we knew to leave all of the electronics, cell phones, and backpacks/handbags at the hotel. Be aware, I saw two people sent away for carrying a computer bag. After we showed the interview letter and our passports, we were brought inside to a vestibule where a greeter with a tablet checked us in and handed us our number (#11). We lined up along the right wall while we waited to go through the x-ray scanner. While we waited, a number of American citizens who showed up for other embassy services were admitted as soon as they showed up, but they wind up waiting in a different queue upstairs so that can add to your wait time to get through the security check.
By 8:20, we went up to the 19th floor and sat in the middle section. (fyi, they do have vending machines up there but they only take US bills or coins, with no credit card options.) After thirty minutes they called us to first number when they asked for originals of all the docs we had emailed to NVC (birth and marriage certificates, original I-864 with tax transcripts, and 2 photos for her passport. ***And even though they were not listed in my wife's interview letter checklist, they also asked me for the originals of my divorce decree and death certificate from my first two marriages. Luckily, I had brought our entire application file with us to Montreal, so I had them right there.
Just after 10 AM, they called our number and my wife went up by herself to the interview room. The interviewer was very nice and asked her the following questions (not in order):
Where did we first meet?
When were you married?
How many children do you have together?
What is your husband's job?
Where will you live in the States?
Have you ever had trouble at the border?
My wife said that he was very nice and after 5 minutes, he handed her a "Welcome to the United States" letter and told her that she should receive her passport with the visa in one to two weeks.
The whole experience lasted just over two hours, and the staff was very professional and helpful. We are so relieved that we're almost all the way finished and we wish everyone else the best of luck!
