Review Topic: K1 Visa

Had my interview this past Friday morning. My interview time was scheduled for 7:40 but of course I had read that it was really a first come, first serve situation so I arrived at the building at 7 to about 10 people in front of me. I ended up being handed a #4 for the k-1 visa applicants though. They told me to hold onto this and wait for that number to be called. Just before 8 they let us all inside - through security and to a small waiting room in front of a large elevator. (I know it has been said before but bring as little to the Consulate with you as possible! I just brought my phone and my documents.) We waited in this small waiting room for maybe 5 minutes tops and then we went upstairs where we were told to sit on two different sides of the room (immigrant and nonimmigrant). They started calling numbers immediately to what is considered a "pre screening".

The gentleman at this first window did my fingerprints and gathered all of my documents starting with my passport, two photos and medical and moving onto the affidavit, birth certificate, etc. This probably took about 15 minutes. Mind, my fingerprints took a while because they wouldn't scan due to my hands always being clammy. The gentleman and I had a laugh about this haha. When this was all done, I was told to sit back down and wait for my number to be called again.

After about 10 minutes, I was called to another window with another super nice gentleman behind it. It started with me having to take an oath and than he asked me 4-5 very basic questions, we chit chatted a little bit and he handed me the "welcome to the USA" paper. He told me the computer had to run a couple last checks but that was essentially it. I walked out, obviously overwhelmingly happy. I get downstairs and security asks me for my name only to tell me I need to go back upstairs to the window I was at. Me being the anxious person I am, am now freaking out that something has gone wrong. Turns out I simply forgot to take my original birth certificate back from the second window haha. Overall, only a slightly stressful morning. If you have all of your documentation with you and get there early, you will breeze through the whole thing. I was out by 9!
