Our interview was June 8, 2015 at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai, India. My husband and I attended the interview together, arriving at the Consulate at one hour prior to our scheduled 10:30 interview time. I am american and my husband is Indian.
When we first arrived I was surprised as to how many people were waiting around and inside, there must of been 300 people. We showed our interview appointment letter to one of the Indian security officers outside and were quickly escorted through to the immigrant interview office. Once we were cleared through security we were given a number and asked to wait. While waiting a nice Indian girl took our papers and put them in order. We were called to the first window and an Indian man took our papers and explained the rest of the process. He showed us a piece of paper and said that it was used to pay green cards fees before traveling to the U.S. and stated that we would only receive a this paper if we were approved. Once he had everything set, he asked us to sit back down and wait for the interview.
I think we waited about 30 minutes before we were called to the interview window. The Consulate Officer was a very nice young american man. He asked my husband to give the oath and they retook his finger prints.
Questions Asked:
Officer: What is Manipuri?
American Wife: It's a language, my husbands mother tongue from Manipur, India.
Officer: How many children do you have?
American Wife: I have 2.
Officer: What is the custody status of your wife's children.
Indian Husband: Her son (name) lives in NY and was recently married. He is # years old. Her other son (name) lives at home and has recently started college. He is # years old.
Officer: Why didn't you apply for a K visa?
American Wife: We did, our file was returned to NVC after the K-1 interview. We decided that we did not want to wait to get married so we withdrew our K-1 Visa petition, married, and filed a CR-1 petition.
Officer: Have many times have you traveled to India?
American Wife: This is my third time visiting my husband in India.
Officer: You married in India, did any of your family attend?
American Wife: No, we were married in December and if my family attended the flight cost alone would of been over $10,000. We do have affidavits from my family members showing their support of our marriage if you would like to see them.
Officer: Did you read the domestic violence pamphlet, can you explain it?
Indian Husband: My husband explained.
The Consulate Officer then stopped asking questions and was typing into the computer. It seemed like it took forever, but it was probably only about 2 minutes.
He apologized for taking so long and then said, "Congratulations, your visa is approved." He gave us the paper on paying the green card fees and showed us the way to exit.
As you can see, the consulate officer asked me more questions than my husband. I recommend, if at all possible, that you attend the visa interview with your spouse. My husband really feels that if I was not present with him, the interview would have been completely different. I did not attend the K-1 visa interview and his experience at the consulate then was not a positive one.
We left India together, and couldn't be more happier. Thank you Visa Journey for all your support! <3 :D
