The actual interview went smooth as anything. I read the reviews here prior to going so I made sure that I was 1st in line, that meant being there by 6:30am. A guy showed up shortly after I got there and then another girl, he asked where to line up so I told him which side (where the yellow posts are). Others came along and lined up on the other side of the building but I didn't tell them otherwise, just figured they would learn the hard way. Most people came and lined up on the right side though.
7:30 the guard came out and put up signs and a little line up thing on the right side of the building so the people on the other side were frustrated cause they were like (I was here 5th! So I could be able to jump in your line?) surprisingly people let them, whateves. Anyways, I checked my phone in and went and sat first chair near the elevator. Then a lady came and approached me and gave me the number #1 (yeahh!!!) and it had on the little number which documents to have ready first.
Waited about 30 mins then a guard let us go up, so I didn't care which part of the elevator I was in cause I had the number 1, it didn't matter. (Though I was first in the elevator at the back)
I waited about 5 minutes and was called to the window. It was a larger lady serving me with terrible makeup, bright pink lips but she was nice! Took my police certificate, taxes of my spouse, affidavit of support, birth certificate, marriage certificate, photos and that was it. Then asked for my prints. She told me to go sit down and I would be called by my number for the interview.
Sat down, barely got through 3 paragraphs of the domestic abuse pamphlet and was called for interview. Nice young guy with glasses and slightly curly dark hair. He asked me to read the oath, then:
- What does your husband do?
- Where does your husband live?
- Your children are already US Citizens?
- Have you ever lived in the US longer than 6 months?
- (my answer was yes above) What type of Visa did you have?
- Have you ever lived in any other country longer than 6 months?
- Have you ever had trouble at the border?
- What are your plans when you arrive in the US?
Then he asked me about my name (I'm half Chinese, so I have a Chinese first name) and then went on asking me about that, what part of China, if I had ever been blah blah. I could tell by his body language that I was going to be approved.
Then he said that my husband didn't file his taxes correctly but I didn't look like a shady person so he let it slide. He said if I looked like a shady person he would have picked it apart................LOL, um ok.
He checked off things on his list, said we didn't need the co-sponsor cause my husband earned enough, then he clicked more on his computer and gave me the Welcome to the US letter. Said that they would then print my visa and told me to have a good day.
I was out by 8:30, BOOM, so easy. Didn't even need 3/4 of the documents I brought with but better safe than sorry.
The next part is what I'm pissed about. So I get home (I live in Ottawa) and I see that apparently they are having issues printing visas. The system that they use is down and has been down since about June 8-9th, and they didn't tell me ANYTHING about this at the time of my interview or I would have asked some questions. Everyone has been getting their visas rather quickly so I had plans to leave before the end of June (which will be 2 weeks from my interview date). And my apartment is up June 30th. I'm seriously worried that I won't have my visa for goodness know how long, like 3-4 weeks (worse case). I don't plan on emailing them for answers until next week. Hoping to goodness that they get the problem figured out ASAP.
So biggest key points at
- GET THERE EARLY!! 6:30am
- Line up on the right side (the side with the yellow posts)
- Don't bring a purse or backpack. I just brought a plastic bag.
- Phone is okay to bring.
- Answer all the questions as short as possible.
- Confirm with them the timeline of when you will receive your visa (even though the paper says 2 weeks, that's just a formality)
