Arrived a little early, queue took a while but no worries, you don't actually have to be in at your allotted time - just try not to be too late! Gave my letter over to reception, they gave me a number.
Didn't have to wait long until my number popped up on the screen. The guy at the window was pretty light hearted, I got the impression that they mainly care about 2 things: your relationship being real and your partner's ability to support you. My partner didn't have tax returns, she'd only been working a year but had filled in and submitted her tax forms, I took along a copy of them plus all her pay stubs for the past year. That did the trick! Went back to wait.
Not sure how long I waited until being called up for the interview. It was quick, was asked where we met, how long had we been in a relationship and to tell the story of the engagement - it was a pretty elaborate one which we had photographed and included in the initial petition. I think the lady just wanted to hear a bit of gossip! After I finished the story she said it all looked to be in order, approved!! Definitely not the grilling I was expecting.
Out of the big folder of documents they only asked for a handful, from memory: DS160 print out (the one you get after completing it online), police certificate, birth certificate, tax returns (which I had alternatives for), and courier instructions showing which location I had chosen.
My interview was actually a week after the petition expiration date so I had brought along a notarised letter of intent from my partner (she had it done in a bank back in the US), I'd just typed up the letter myself based on a few that are online. But, they didn't ask for it!! I had sent in a letter form my partner a few weeks earlier asking to extend the petition but never heard back from the embassy.
Took just over a week for the visa to arrive, I received an email when the embassy sent it. Finally got it, now I'm starting to read up on the AOS stuff, fingers crossed for that and good luck with your visa journey!!
