Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Our interview was on February 6, 2014 and it was relatively painless! We arrived about 15 minutes early for the 1 pm interview, went in around 1:15 pm and were outside by 1:30 pm. There's a lot of two hour meter street parking nearby, and we left everything but our giant folder of documents and IDs in the car. We had a friend come with us as an interpreter since my husband isn't fluent in English, but the IO was bilingual so the interview was conducted in Spanish and our friend stayed in the waiting area. We asked the IO how many interviews he does per day, and he told us that he usually does 6-7, but since he was the only Spanish speaker in that day, he had 10.

Going in I was concerned that we didn't have a lot of "official" legal documentation of our relationship, but we followed other VisaJourney members' advice and made sure we brought what we had and lots of photos, cards, emails, etc. Ultimately, the IO didn't want to see anything, but I'm glad we went in prepared!

After we swore to tell the truth, the IO asked to see our passports, birth certificates, and my husband's social security card and EAD/AP card. He asked each of us to say the full name, birthday, and address of the other person, as well as if either of us had been married before. He also asked my husband to confirm the date that he arrived to the US and where he went through customs. Then he basically went through the I-485 document we had sent in to make sure that my husband's answers matched (where he was born, his mother's name, etc.). He also went through all of the questions about if my husband's committed crimes, terrorist activities, drug trafficking etc. and made sure that my husband clearly understood what all of the terms meant. He confirmed that we have a co-sponsor but didn't want to see any new documents, and told us that our case looked good but they would have to wait on paperwork and his supervisor's approval, which could take up to 6 weeks. That was it! Fortunately I had read other VisaJourney posts and knew that it often comes through faster than that. I checked the case status online that night and it already said that the green card was processing. It arrived in the mail a week later!
