Review Topic: K1 Visa

We had our interview today for K-1 (fiance) visa to the United States. Our appointment was scheduled for 9am and we arrived at US Embassy in New Delhi 8am. Since they allow entry only 15 minutes before scheduled interview time we sat in an outdoor waiting area across the street from the entrance to the embassy. My fiance and K-1 petitioner, Jessica McCaffery, who is a US citizen was allowed to attend my interview. We first went through security and as a precaution we only brought necessary documents and left all cell phones and bags at home. When inside we were given a ticket number and sat in the waiting area. After approximately 1 1/2 hours later (10:30) an Indian officer called us to the window and collected the following documents: PCC (police clearance certificate), my Indian passport, visa fee receipt, 2 photographs of me, my copy of birth certificate, and the I-134 affidavit of support. Since my fiance is still a student and has very little income we used her mother as a joint sponsor. They collected the tax returns for the joint sponsor in addition to the I-134. He then asked us to wait until the American visa officer calls us for hte interview. After about another hour our ticket number was called and we were sent to the window of the American visa officer. Our officer was a young American woman and she first asked for me to scan my finger prints at the window. She then asked us the following questions: How did you meet your fiance?, When did you start dating?, Why do you want to get married in the United States and not in India?. She addressed the following questions to my fiance: What do you do? What does your mother, the joint sponsor do?, How long have you been in India with your fiance?. After answering these questions the officer said our visa was approved and we could pick up our passport after approximately 7-10 days. We will get a notification by text or email when the visa is ready for pick up at the OFC (off site facilitation center) at Nehru Place. Overall the interview went very well, and we feel that having my American fiance attend the interview was helpful.
