I got to the embassy at about 7.45. There were 2 queues outside, 1 to have your name checked off the list and then the other to get inside. I got inside at about 8, and was number I-911, which meant I was the 11th immigrant visa in line.
They started calling numbers at about 8, I'd say there were about 10 N (non immigrant) numbers called for every immigrant number. The immigrant numbers were all called in order so you can pretty easily gage how long you have to wait. I just read my book, the screen pings every time a number is called so you don't miss it.
I was called to the first window at about 9.30, and spoke to the chinese lady. I had read on here that she's very quiet, but I didn't really find that, it's sort of difficult to hear anyone because they're behind glass and there were kids shouting and crying all around. She took my passport photo, birth certificate and photocopy, police certificate and photocopy. There was a brief moment of panic when she asked for a police certificate for Australia, which I didn't have. I lived there for 1 day short of 1 year, but the forms I had submitted prior to interview only asked for month and year so it just said '02-2012 to 02-2013'. Obviously if I had been there 1 day longer I would have had to get a police certificate. Luckily I had my old passport with me so showed her the stamps that showed the days I arrived and left, and she asked me to amend the form to include the exact date. Then we had a bit of a chat about Melbourne as she used to live there too!
After sitting back down I was called to the second part of the interview about 45 minutes later. I was a bit nervous but it wasn't so bad. I had to do the oath and sign one of the forms. Then she just asked me a few questions. The ones I remember are
- How did you meet?
- How do you keep in contact?
- What is the longest you've been in the States for?
- Have you met his family?
- What do they do for a living?
- What does you fiance do for a living?
- Do you have any savings?
- What kind of work did you do when you were on your J1 visa?
- What kind of work are you hoping to do when you move?
- Have you ever overstayed or been denied a visa?
- Have you ever been arrested?
It sounds like an interrogation but it was more relaxed then that. Then she said I was approved and handed back the original birth certificate and police certificate. That was it! I was out by about 10.40 and went to get some lunch at Starbucks and let my boyfriend know the good news!
