Review Topic: K1 Visa

Wow, where to start? My fiance is not the best with details, so I'll tell you what I know for sure. His appointment wasn't until the late afternoon, his arrival was not remarkable. Got in, signed in, paid his fees and then waited a long time for his interview. His son was with him as he is accompanying his father to the US.

He said he ended up being the last person interviewed and really just wanted to get it over with. He said his interviewer was really nice; she asked general questions about our relationship, how we met, how we communicate, what we did on my visits. She did ask if my daughter (who is 5 now) ever accompanied me but my fiance explained we just couldn't afford the plane ticket for 2. She seemed satisfied.

She liked all of our proofs and had no issue until it came to my divorce paper from India. She said she could not approve his visa application at that time until they did some research to see if my divorce was really valid. Wow, talk about a huge disappointment! We were very upset. My fiance said the CO was really nice and seemed genuinely unhappy she could not approve him right then. She gave him the paper with temporarily denied marked on it and told him to have me email more proof.

Well, we had no more proof. It was a very stressful week for us! I emailed them that day, Nov. 1st, and explained that my divorce, although different, was definitely legal in India and thus should be recognized in the US. A few days later I found a blurb on the State Dept. website which said they do accept foreign divorces.

The next day, a lady from the embassy called and told Abdalla to bring their passports back in! I was so excited but still a little worried; until it's in your hand, do you really know? Thankfully he went in yesterday, Nov. 12 (my birthday!!!) and they did indeed say he was approved and took his passport and his son's! We had already signed up for DHL so they said just go home and wait, basically.

Of course, there is always the worry that AP will take a long time but I am feeling positive. We have had a very long wait to be together (2 years) and I've been really ill so we are for sure looking forward to the future, insha'Allah khair!

My only complain about the embassy was the way it was handled in the beginning. They received our packet in August and we never heard from them! I finally contacted the NVC and got verbal proof it was sent and then emailed the embassy (no calls are allowed nor are visits). They didn't answer. I tried again and still no answer. This is days by now. So I finally found a different email that got answered within one day! They said they sent the packet but my husband never had one delivered. Oh well. I got ahold of them in late Oct. and he had his appt. set 3 weeks later on Nov. 1st. So they were really good AFTER I got ahold of them.

Also we were told to do the old forms and not the newer DS-260 online. After I did them all we couldn't find the link to one of them on the Jamaican embassy website any longer. So I contacted the embassy and they said, Oh just got ahead and use the DS-260. OK. I sent all the forms to my fiance just in case and glad I did because they still asked for them!

Just wish immigration in general was more streamlined and had the same rules everywhere. Otherwise, this last time has been pretty smooth.
