So my interview was for 9am but I got to the embassy around 07.15 and joined the end of a queue around 6 people long. There were tents outside the embassy with people laying in and a sign outside it saying they had been on hunger strike for 23 days. Couldn't quite work out what they were protesting about.
When we eventually got in after going through security it was 7.40am and I took a seat and waited for my number to be called out. I went to window 13 and a friendly American guy took my finger prints and asked for my birth cert, police cert and affidavit and fiancés tax stubs. He asked me how I was, said congrats on your engagement. He was friendly but still professional. He looked at my birth cert for a while, and the copy, and he said "this isn't the original". I was like "what". He said this is a copy of a copy, you can tell by the white border. I looked at it and thought what the heck? I had been over my file 100000 times, but he was right, where was the original? He asked me "do your parents have it", I said "they must have" and he said "okay you can go and sit down and wait to be called for interview"
So I went back to sit down and waited an agonising 45mins not knowing what to do about my birth certificate or if they would overlook it. Eventually got called to window 15 for my interview. By this point I was a mess.
Cue the loveliest African American lady. So friendly and genuine. With a big warm smile. She asked
1) How did you meet?
I told her we met online she said she speaks to a lot of people who have met online
2) When did we decide to meet?
I told her it was in June and how nervous we were and I mentioned how Steves parents were particularly worries about him travelling to see me
3)When did we decide to get married? Was it a surprise?
I said not really as he had already said he wanted to speak to my dad at Christmas and we actually filed the k1 in January before we were officially engaged in feb
She was really excited to hear about my engagement and we were laughing and smiling a lot
4) What did you think of Thankgiving?
I said it was like xmas, and she said "but without the crackers" I laughed and said I was gonna bring some on the plane but thought better of it since they have gunpowder in them and she said "Yeah don't do that...." and I thought shoot ive said too much. But she started laughing and said she didn't want to see me on BBC news.
At the end she said okay well the interview went great but there are two problems
*stomach sinks*
Your passport looks like its been tampered with at the corner, and your birth cert is a copy, not the original. She apologised and said that they are really picky about the corners of passports being frayed and they couldn't accept it
**PANIC**
She gave me a blue slip that said "REFUSAL FOR INSUFFICIENT DOCS" she said not to worry about the word "refusal" it was an administrative term. And that I needed to call the courier as soon as I had the documents and they would pick them up.
So that was my experience, it was pretty terrible.
