My husband had to tackle this process on his own. He flew from Toronto to Montreal on Sunday, took the 747 bus and stayed at the Days Inn Centre-ville/Downtown. It's nothing fancy, but it's a 10 minute walk from the consulate and he did a "practice run" last night.
He arrived in line at the Consulate around 6:45 am and was the 5th in line. Thanks to Saylin's diagram and a few people in front of him not knowing what he knew, he was able to get #C3. I tried to walk him through everything before he went in and he felt very prepared.
He said they called #C4 first, then started from #C1. He was called up for a brief discussion, fingerprints and was then told to go sit back down. Less than 5 minutes later, his number was called again. He had his fingerprints taken again, was asked a few simple questions (where did you meet your wife, where does your wife work, where does she live, where do you plan to live when you move, etc) and was given the "I'm approving your visa. Welcome to the US" letter. I still have not seen the letter, but he was told to expect his passport with visa stamp in it between 3 and 5 business days.
He was in and out by 9:00 am EST. Overall, it sounded like a smooth process and I am so grateful that this part of our journey has finally come to an end.
