After dropping off mobile phone and keys at Goulds Chemist, I walked 2 minutes down the street to the Embassy and got in a queue of around 20. Waited 10 minutes and then we were asked to get our appointment letters and passports ready. A lady checked my name against a list and asked if I had got any electronic devices. We were then taken 4 at a time through the airport style metal detector, removing watches and belts, and then directed around the corner to reception.
The receptionist again asked for appointment letter and fixed my interview number to it and told me to take a seat. The bank of screens in the waiting area were not working, but there was a large screen above the refreshment stand showing the current numbers being called, and the numbers were announced loudly enough.
After 10 mins was called to window 13 and spoke to a young black woman.
She asked for originals and copies of birth certificate, police check and the I-134. For the proof affidavit of support I was only asked for the employment letter and paystubs. Then came the moment when I thought it was going to go horribly wrong. She asked me if I had a copy of Part 2 of the DS-230 form. When I said that it wasnt needed for a K1 visa, the look I was given could've frozen the glass partition between us. She slapped the first page onto the partition and told me to read the first paragraph where it says 'This part, together with Part II, constitutes the complete Application for Immigrant Visa.' Thankfully she let me fill it in there and then while she took my 2 US size passport photos and filed all my documents. I was handed my chest xray, had my fingerprints taken, and was then given a pink slip to fill in for the delivery of my visa and told to wait until my number was called again.
After only about 30 minutes was called to window 15 and was met by a youngish, bearded american man. He asked the following questions in a very officious manner that did little to put me at ease, and he didnt seem to appreciate my attempts to interject any humour.
How did you first meet?
When did you first meet in person & how many times?
When did you first talk about marriage?
How long did she stay in the UK?
How long did you stay in US?
Did you overstay your 90 days in the US? and Are you sure?
What makes you think the 2 of you are so compatible?
Then in the same tone of voice he informed me that I had been approved and could go pay for the courier delivery. I may have seen the slightest flicker of a smile when I thanked him 3 times
To sum up, nowhere near as stressful as I imagined, even though I had read numerous reviews telling me this. So glad this part is over. I can now concentrate on being with the one I love.
