We left our homes around 5.30 and did not get to the Embassy until around 6.20! There was already a big line waiting and we did not try to bypass it as we needed to calm down a bit (especially me) LOL. By 6.40, we were already at Checkpoint 2 to go into the security area. After a 25 minutes wait in line, we arrived at the Consulate's waiting area. We were told where to sit and waited our turn. Finally at 8.30 exactly, we were called at the first window to check in. The girl wasn't too nice, but she wasn't too bad either. She freaked me out when she said that I was missing my tax return transcripts! Thank goodness we brought a copy and she accepted them along with some new pictures. She asked a couple questions and at 8.40 we were able to return to the second waiting area (same room, just a different part.) As we were flipping through the documents that were returned to us, we realized that the original Tax transcripts were included and that she probably added them by mistake. There was nothing we could do but just wait...We waited for about an hour. Then, O's name was called. We went happily to a nice lady who joked with us about our file being the largest one here and that she couldn't even lift it (LOL); but to our disappointment, it was just to get his fingerprints...Back to the second waiting area... We waited and eavesdropped, and watched some news on the TV.
At 11.25, finally they called O for his interview. I went with him and the nice smiling lady (very young) told me that we would be interviewed separately and to just wait my turn..I guess we had a "Stokes" interview. I was trying to eavesdrop, but couldn't because it was either too noisy or I was very nervous and my ears started to ring. After about 5 minutes, it was my turn. My interview was performed in English. And every time I answered something, she said with a smile, "good answer." After 2 or 3 minutes, she called O again and return some files to us... Then she took O's passport page (copy) and stapled a yellow tag to it and told us with a big smile: "Félicitations." She asked if I spoke creole (and I said yes) and then she proceeded to tell us the next step (paying the visa at Haiti Messenger) and also to congratulate us on how genuine our relationship felt. I was very happy! She was nice and we said a big "MERCI" and left to go pay!
By noon we were out of the Embassy and excited to start our next step!!! The questions we were asked were: How and when did we meet? Have we met each other's family? Where do I work? Where was I born? Have we planned our wedding? Why aren't we getting married in Haiti? Did our parents/family approve of our relationship? How did he propose? Do we have a ring? What school did I go to? What did I study? How many times have we seen each other? What do we do when we are together?
A lot of people got denied a fiance's visa today because they didn't have enough proof. Some got their decisions delayed because the fiance (e) was not attending the interview and they requested that he/she be there. So my advice: be prepared, and unless you really can't, make sure you both are at the interview!
4 out 5 stars because of the long wait and the rude 'circulation' officers.
