In all, my experience at the US Embassy in London was pretty average. My appointment was at 8am and I arrived a half hour before as directed. There were only a few people in the queue but by the time they began allowing people to enter, the queue grew pretty fast. They get people through pretty fast. You have to show your interview appointment letter and MRV receipt.
When inside the Embassy, you again show the above documents and they place a sticker with I9-- and you procede to the waiting room. I was I901, the first immigrant visa of the day. There are far more N numbers than I, as they are for nonimmigrant visas.
I waited apoximately 15 minutes before being called to a window. At this window I spoke to (a pretty rude and unfriendly) asian lady, who collected the documents outlined in packet 4 and also handed me back my CD with my chest x-ray which you are told to keep in your hand luggage when flying and also a pamphlet on domestic abuse in the US. I was then told to sit back down and wait for my number to be called again.
I made the mistake of not bringing any reading material, thinking that as I was the first appointment of the day, it would be over pretty fast. I was wrong. I waited another 2.5 hours before being called again. 212 "N" numbers were called before I was. I entertained myself with reading the wrappers of the snacks I bought at the stand inside. I could probably recite to you exactly what is in a Snickers bar. You can also go outside whilst waiting to smoke, although you might miss your number.
This was the actual interview. It was with a white male with dark hair and stubble. His name was Garrett. Extremely friendly and polite. I even managed to have a bit of a laugh with him which is something I didn't expect. I thought it would all be very official and strict. He looked through my documents, put me under oath and I signed the remaining parts that were left when sending in packet 3. He then asked me several questions. Nowhere near as much as I thought he would.
-When and how did you meet your fiancée?
-How many times have you been to the US?
-How many times has she been to the UK?
-Does she have any brothers or sisters? What are their names? What do they do for work?
-When do you plan to travel to the US?
That was it! He told me I had been approved and to fill in the pink courier form and take it to their desk. I paid for before 12pm delivery, which was £20.60. They told me it would be no more than seven days.
All in all, a good experience which was ruined a bit by the rude lady and wait time. My fiancée arrives in England in a couple of days and then we fly back together January 18th, never to be apart again!
