Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

Our interview on Sept 24/12 was for my CR1 and my son's CR2 visa. I'm glad we looked for the consulate the day before, because it was difficult to find. The sign outside was tiny and Rue St. Alexandre is not a main road and many locals didn't even know where it was when I asked them for directions.

My husband stood in line at 6:30am (he was the 4th in line) and my son and I joined him just before 7:30am when they opened the doors. The guard let in one person at a time. All we had was our cell phones, wallets and our documents.

At the desk just inside the front doors, they checked our Loomis confirmation # and put a sticker on the back of our passports then sent us up the stairs to security. Security was much like what you go through at the airport. They were strict on not bringing in food and drinks, but let us bring cell phones in. They kept the cell phones at the front desk and gave us a tag to pick them up afterwards. We were allowed to bring our stroller in. I took a photo of the sign they put up outside the consulate telling you what you can't bring. ***If you want me to send you a pic of this sign, please send me a message and I will gladly do so.

We sat around the waiting area by the elevator and chatted with other VJ members while waiting for them to get us. The guard let us on the elevator at 8am and we headed over to counter 14A/B to get our numbers. C3! Then sat down in the waiting area. They seemed to call the numbers in order C1, C2 then us. It was a 2-step process.

Window 1: Document checking. They asked for every original document (and photocopies of the documents) that we had originally submitted electronically. Took fingerprints too. They kept the documents in a folder with our names on it then had us sit back down to wait for the next step.

Window 2: Declaration/oath and questions. I had to read the oath out loud then they fingerprinted me again as a declaration that I agreed to the oath. (My fingerprints were taken twice - once for me and once on behalf of my son, who is a minor). The woman asked only two questions: Where and when did you two meet? How did you decide to get married?

Then she handed us our "Welcome to the United States" letter and sent us on our way. We were out of the consulate by 8:55am! It was extremely easy and low stress. The most stressful part was finding the consulate and getting there on time with a 5 year old. As long as you have your documents well organized and photocopies of everything, you will be fine.
