We arrived outside the Consulate about half an hour before opening and we were amongst some of the first in. They opened the doors promptly at their posted opening hours (so if it's raining/cold/hot, dress appropriately for waiting outside!). Once inside we went through the security area, metal detectors, and had to leave our cell phones with security (received a little "claim check" type tag to claim them on our way out).
We took the elevator up and waited in line for our initial number. At the first window they looked over our documents just to make sure that we had brought what we needed. We sat down to wait... and wait.... It's been a couple of years since my interview, so I don't remember the details of what/if anything happened between then and the actual interview (other than the fire alarm going off and us all being ushered down 19 flights of stairs!).
The interview itself was quick and painless. My husband came in with me and she just asked us a few questions like, where did you meet, where are you planning on living, etc. There were no "trick" questions or any questions where they checked our answers against each other. She told us right then that she would approve my visa. I was pregnant at the time of my interview and she asked when I was due. My interview was mid June and I was due July 31st. When I told her this she asked where I planned to have my baby and I said "Hopefully in the States if I get my visa in time." She said that she was concerned that I may not get the documentation in time, so she would submit my application for overnight processing. She sent me next door to another office where I left my envelope, passport and documents and I was told to come back the next day to pick up my passport with visa inside.
Came back the next day, everything was ready for me and I drove across the border in the US that day, the day after my interview.
Everyone was efficient, but friendly. Other than the long wait through the day, it was a pleasant experience.
Bring food/snacks! All there was up there was a drink and vending machine.
