Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

My husband and I went in for his adjustment of status interview on August 23, 2012. Our actual experience at USCIS was quick and easy- the worst part was having to drive ten hours from the Upper Peninsula for a 20 minute interview.

Our appointment was at 8 am and we arrived around 7:30 am. There was no waiting line at security at all, as there were only around a dozen other people there for interviews, and maybe another dozen for biometrics. The security/reception people were courteous, and the waiting area had tvs and was fairly comfortable.

People with infopass appointments took a number, but the people with interviews had their names called out. We waited around 15 minutes before my husband's name was called. I think we were her first interview of the day, and the interviewing officer immediately put us at ease-- she was professional, but she seemed very warm. She walked us back to a private office where we did the interview.

She simply asked us to verify our names, DOB, place of birth, spouse's name, spouse's DOB. Then she asked my husband all of the "nightmare skeleton-in-the-closet" questions off the I-485... was he a terrorist, did he sell drugs, did he intend to practice polygamy in the US, etc. She only asked us one other question: What did the other like to do for fun? Then she asked if we had any other documents we would like to submit that had both our names, and I gave her our joint bank account statements for the last few months. (We had already submitted our lease.)

She didn't even officially tell us we were approved; she just explained to my husband that the green card would arrive in 7-10 days, and went into explaining how to remove the conditions on his green card after 2 years of marriage, then she asked us if we had any more questions, and walked us back to the waiting area.

I think we were in the interview for around 15 minutes. We brought a ton of back-up paperwork that she didn't even look at (extra pictures beyond the 10 we submitted with our original application, wedding cards, emails we had written each other). I was surprised by how little they questioned us, but our case seems to have been very straightforward. (Met as grad students, dated 3 years, married, AOS from F-1.) I'm glad we were prepared, though.
