When getting off the plane and heading to immigration, you head to the left into the "Visitors" section which takes you down an escalator away from everyone else. This was brilliant for me since there was barely anyone in the queue downstairs so I got to the front of the queue really quickly. I had about a 5-10 minute wait to be called up. When I was called up I said "I'm here on a K1 visa" and he took everything off me and asked me a couple of questions including "What's your fiances name?", "How long have you known him?" He also asked me "Do you know what a K1 visa is and how it works?" Then he went on to say "are you sure you want to get married?" with a smirk...

He told me I had 90 days to get married, that I shouldn't apply for a SSN before I get married (which is bull, it's easier to get one before you get married which I did and it all went fine) and then put my files to one side and that was it! I wasn't sent into secondary processing and got to go straight through the doors into baggage claim. It didn't take long at all.

All in all the experience was fine. Flew in on a very quiet Tuesday early-evening (I'd highly recommend!) and raced off the plane to get to the immigration line first. Was called up to a window like usual and had my big envelope, passport and usual customs form in hand. When I approached the window I said "I'm entering as a new resident today" and the POE officer said ok and that he'd need my envelope, so I passed it over with my passport and customs form. He took my fingerprints and photo (like usual) and then asked me 2 questions - if I had on me over $10,000 in cash, And, if I was carrying any food. He led me through to the little side room which looks just like a waiting room, and said Office Something (can;t remember his name) would call me up by name (saying, that I was the only one in there at that time. When I left two other guys had come in after. I guess it can be quite busy at certain times.)

The guy came in shortly after and opened my big envelope and I could see from where I was sat it was my birth cert, marriage cert, police cert, passport pics, etc) He shouted over (like I say, was the only one there) to confirm my address, which I did. Then he did a bit more typing. Called me up and I had to sign twice, and also do a proper ink-y fingerprint twice. He asked for a USA phone no from me in case of any probs. He said my greencard could take up to 6 months and explained the stamp in my passport meant I could go in and out of the US if needs be. Then he said I was all set and said the words I've been waiting to hear "Welcome to America"! I left to get my luggage with a massive bounce in my step!

The whole process was official but not scary or intimidating. Just makes sure you don't carry food on you, I got asked that about 3 times just leaving the airport.

Easy!!

Flight info: Bangalore - Frankfurt - Denver

Frankfurt:
Had only 80 minutes lay over time, could get to the gates within 20 minutes. Had spare time, smoking zones available

Denver:
Arrived on time and walked to the immigration check. 14 counters. Had the customs declaration form filled in and ready. Was called by the lady at counter 14, she asked for the passport and customs form. took my fingerprints and asked me to follow her to the room for the immigrants checking in.
One officer stood in behind the desk in the room. I was only one at the moment so he called me right up and had me sign a form. Then took fingerprints of my index finger. Asked me to be seated and then processed my paperwork. Sealed the passport page next to IR Visa page and said that it would be my temporary Permanent Resident (green) Card until it is sent to me. He said it would take max of 2 months and said I was good to go. I asked him about what the process for SSN was and he asked me to visit the local SSN office near my US address.

Entering the U.S. with my K-1 visa turned out to be a non-event.

Having flown into Denver airport, I was lucky to be among the first passengers to leave the plane. When I arrived at Immigrations, there was hardly any queue.

(Quick reminder: As a K-1 visa holder you have to use the "Visitors" lanes.)

While waiting in line, I got all required papers out so as not to waste the Immigration Officer's time: sealed envelope from the Consulate, passport with the visa, I-94, and customs form.

When it was my turn, the IO looked at my passport, opened the envelope and, while flipping through my documents, followed the usual border control procedure: Take fingerprints, take photo, go through oh-so-familiar questions like "How did you guys meet?", "What does your fiancée do for a living?", etc.

When he was satisfied with the information he found in the envelope and with whatever the fingerprint scan brought up on his screen, he stamped my passport; reminded me that the K-1 is a single-entry visa and that we had to get married within 90 days; and handed me my passport and the customs form.

The whole procedure took less than ten minutes overall. Alas, I have one minor "complaint": There was no "Welcome to America!", which would have added a nice touch.

Thankfully, though, two friends of ours were meeting me at the airport, and they welcomed me with a big cheer, so all's good.
