I got to the consulate at around 12:30pm on 15 September 2015. There were approximately 8 people in front of me. We all waited in line until 13:05pm. You then proceed in one by one and are requested to leave all electronics with security and proceed through a scanner. Go through the door and follow the yellow footprints.

Once inside I waited about 20 minutes to go up to the first counter. The South African lady behind the counter asked me for my documents one by one.

Unabridged Birth Certificate
Police Clearance
Passport
2 USA Visa Photos
Evidence of Financial Support (Tax returns and Letter of Current Employment)
Divorce Decree(if applicable- for either you or your fiance or both)
Relationship Evidence (Photos, Skype Conversations, Emails, FB posts, travel documentation for both of you)

I got asked a few questions, they were very general. What is you final address in America going to be? Have you tr... read complete review

My fiance had his K1 visa interview in Johannesburg on July 28.

He arrived at the consulate at 10:30 am, because he flew in from Cape Town the night before and had nothing better to do! Also had to catch his flight home that afternoon so he wanted it to go quickly.

He was obviously first in line. They had no problem with him waiting outside that whole time. Bring food with you if you get there that early...though they won't let you take it inside with you.

At 1 pm, they start letting people inside.
-Go through security like at an airport
-Leave your laptop/big stuff at home. It takes longer.
-They keep your phone when you go through security and you pick it up when you leave.

Then you follow the footsteps on the ground into the consulate. Go to the first counter and get a number. Because he was first, he went straight to the next counter and a South African lady asked for all his documents. He handed over... read complete review

Super easy interview, was asked just the basic questions that one sees here on VJ. One thing, I arrived for my 1pm interview at 11am, was told by security that you are not allowed to wait there, but have to wait at the mall or anywhere else but not at the consulate. Only allowed to start queueing up at 12:30. So if you get there early, dont waste your time by trying to wait there.

There aren't a lot of South African's on here, so I thought I would do my due diligence and post a review for the Johannesburg Consulate:

I arrived at the embassy at around 12:20 in the afternoon for a 13:00 appointment. There was hardly anybody there when I arrived and I ended up being fourth in line.

Outside the embassy, security verified our names with their appointment sheets at around 12:45. At 13:00 they let us in one by one and it was the usual US Embassy protocol from there - remove all electronics from your pockets, bags etc and submit them for collection when you leave and just to clarify, electronics obviously includes your cell phone. Anyways, after that I went inside and collected a number at the front podium.

After about 10mins of waiting, I was called to the first window. At this point, a South African woman asked for my name and collected my packet, which appeared to be my I-129F petition and then some. She then asked me for ... read complete review

Today I went for my K1 Visa interview and after nearly a years worth of filing and refiling various bit of paper work it came down to this, the final hurdle.

The interview was scheduled for 13:00 at the Consulate in Sandton, Johannesburg (It is literally opposite the Sandton City Mall on the corner of Rivonia Rd and Sandton Dr). I have lived in Johannesburg for over 23 years and was very familiar with the area. That said, my advice is to leave 1 1/2 hours prior to your interview so that you get there early. You maybe sitting out there in the sun for a while but trust me when I tell you the queue does build up quickly, and that it not a quick process to actually get into the consulate.

The security check is fairly simple and is managed by the usual "intellectual powerhouses" that you would expect from your average car guard. They are pretty dense and unprofessional to say the least and on the whole are a poor reflection on the US consulate itself. Pack ligh... read complete review
