Review Topic: K1 Visa

I (U.S. Citizen) was warned by gringo and tico amigos that if I didn't attend the K-1 Visa interview with my Costa Rican fiance then the embassy staff would harass, discriminate, and embarrass my fiance for being a same-sex K-1 Visa applicant. I didn't believe this would happen but unfortunately it did! One (Asian-American male officer) out of the three officers asked my same-sex fiance extremely inappropriate personal questions about his sexuality. For example; Are you really gay? You don't look gay to me. How long have you been gay? Where do gay Costa Ricans hang out and hook up? How long have you been having sex with other males? Do you wear dresses and makeup? Why do you want to be gay? Why don't you enjoy sex with girls? These questions are out of line and irrelevant to a K-1 Visa interview! A formal complaint to the State Department will be filed for this officer.

Hi guys, me and my GF were waiting to hear from the embassy so we could continue with our petition here in CR. I was told that once they call you you can go to Pavas and retrieve the package but in our case we got an email listing the documents we need before scheduling the appointment. Is this common? If you got the package before the interview... what was inside?

Thanks for your help!

Ricardo!

Had two reviewing officers in this "bank teller" process. Questions were all exactly as provided from others on the internet. The first officer was pushy for and did not offer to return original documents. After this, we had to wait for the cashier who was 20 minutes late from lunch. Finally the last counselor was US and was friendly and delivered the good news. The passports were to be picked up the following week.

Good news: Our K1 visa was approved. Bad News: On August the consulate was asking for the form DS250, we that one in advance. Then when he picked up packet #3, DS250 was no longer in use, now they were asking for form DS 160 (online), so we did that one. A few days before the interview, the consulate called my fiancé to let him know that the interview was changed form September 30 to October 1st, but they didn't mention a change of form. So when my fiancé went to the San Jose Embassy, and he was told that the form has changed again during those last 2 weeks. We were lucky that the embassy has a place where you can filled forms and print them. He got to the embassy at 10am (2 hours before his interview) so he could take the pictures right there, he left the embassy at 4pm. He was the last one to leave the Embassy. My fiancé told me that the staff are very friendly. In the interview they asked him: "When and where did you met her?" "do you have kids?" "How you get along with ... read complete review

The wait was long, about 1 1/2 hours. First, went to the window and the lady looked through the papers to make sure that they were all there. Then that's when the 1 1/2 wait occured. The consulate was late, but was called in quickly once he arrived. He really only asked a couple of questions, like how we met my fiancee's name, her occupation, my occupation, and where she lives. He didn't look at any of the extra photos brought. Then the interview was over and said I could come by in 4 business days to pick it up. Overall pretty good.
