  1. London, NYC and Chicago are the financial capitals of the western world. All three cities fare poorly in your silly surveys.

Who gives a ###### if they are the financial capitals of the western world - for now. You say that like it affects our lives in any meaningful way. You also say it as if this somehow diverts from the reality that the city and greater region is a craphole. Look at the houses of the Jersey shore, we have a dog house that is worth more and nicer than their homes. Heck, look at jersey shore, what a dump.

Three separate independent yearly studies hardly constitute my survey.

I can play along too, much like a certain member on here, you fail to grasp that they heydays of NYC area is over. No one cares anymore and the world is looking to Asia-Pac, where the growth for the next century is going to be. At least the west coast has a good chance of being part of it.

  2. When the financial gurus who rule the planet start inhabiting the cities that rank high on that list like Melbourne, let me know. For the time being, they seem to prefer lower-ranking cities like New York City and London and Chicago. I wonder why.

Does Bill Gates and Warren Buffet live in any one of those cities? Not to mention, why would I or anyone else care about whether financial gurus lived in a city? Does nothing for my daily commute, quality of life, quality of the city I live in etc etc etc.

The most common type of foreigner from the first world who migrates to NYC or Chicago are those doing so for the money and quite possibly career opportunities - in their career. What percentage of these particular migrants then stick there and do not go back abroad? Lets also not forget 9% of migrants to the US are from the first world.

Whereas, go look at how many people migrate to Australian cities and move there permanently. I am talking about migrants from the first world, who have choices and not desperate for money. Half the people I worked with in last position in AUS had migrated from first world countries and were on their way to acquiring citizenship; mocked me for moving to the US and that was before this financial crisis and during the good times of the decade.

London, is nothing like NYC or Chicago and quite nice actually, so that's a shitty comparison.

EDIT: We also do not do coupons in AUS, with a $53K median salary we do not need to use them.

  3. Yes. Those college educated affluent northeastern mommas are really cramping our style. You should check out parts of the country with lots of high-school dropout po' as hell dixie mommas.. now those places got style. New everything. Freakin' awesome.

Point well taken there, however, they have an excuse for their condition. There is no reason for modern NYC and DC to resemble Hiroshima 8:16 A.M. on August 6, 1945.

This lack of investment into cities is why Rush and Becks have been able to use liberal cities as an example of policy failure and use them as a crutch to their arguments. Boston, NYC and DC should be rivaling the highest ranked cities in the world, instead of not even making the top 60.

  4. Griping and/or debating is what this forum is about. What's important...at least imo is that the perps pay for their crimes...it helps in regards to sending a message out to future genociders/murderers.

Many NAZI and Bolshevik butchers never paid for their inhumane crimes against humanity...and most likely they never will. :(

Genocide happens all of the time and we ignore it. Turkey will not even admit they committed genocide against Armenians in WWI, why are they not held accountable? Germany has paid retribution, whereas Turkey will not even admit their wrongdoing.

  5. Nobody cared, really, and it takes a Jewish journalist of German descent with a personal agenda to try to turn it into a story 75 years later. Nobody cared back then and very few care today, mostly Jews, as the folks of the Nazi regime are almost all dead and the few who are still sitting in a wheelchair will be dead very soon. I'm getting tired of this #######. No matter what you did back then, whether you were a university professor, a cop, or a "detention officer," you either worked for the Nazi-Government or you were eliminated. There was just no choice and there is really no point in trying to keep the wounds bleeding.

The WWII card has been used for decades now, do you expect anything to change? Israel has repetitively disrespected other countries with the latest being the falsification of passports. Therefore, it was about time [aka convenient] another WWII story came out. Unfortunately for Israel, excluding the US, no one else buys that sympathy ####### anymore.

  6. Danno boy seems a bit confused. Now one in the UK gives a #### what flag you fly on your bike or anywhere else for that matter - or indeed whether you fly one or not, nor whether you burn them or whatever else you feel like doing with a piece of cloth. UK citizens simply do not place any undue importance on faux patriotism.

he he that is true. They also do not drive their country into the stone ages [libeteapartian style] under the guise of patriotism. For example, claiming that cutting off unemployment benefits, not investing a dime into your country or not providing health care to a disabled citizen is somehow patriotic.

Nevertheless, excluding the UK which is the other extreme, it's flat-out ridiculous that the concerns of Hispanics are placed over [higher] than those of the citizens of this country. Certainly will not find this happening in any other country, most definitely not in Mexico.

  7. Krugman is right. You cannot demand bringing down the cost of medicare (and any other medical insurance scheme, for that matter) while not endorsing the idea that the coverage will go towards effective and necessary treatments only. All industrialized countries do that and their populations live longer, healthier lives than we do. Their health care system is more effective than ours and cost less than half of we shell out.

You can get all excited about these propaganda terms but that doesn't really help the debate. As long as we demand that there will be no diversion from the fatal course we're on in terms of effectiveness research and funding guided based on that, we're going to drown in our debt. And leave tens of thousands of people dying year after year as a result of this insanity.

There is a debate? The right sticks to the best health care in the world rhetoric and cares little to debate. Study after study illustrates the US system neither being the best nor the most efficient, yet they still beat the same drum.

As long as the system is run for-profit and there is no invoice-price NHS (va equivalent) to compete with the private sector, the cost will never come down in the US.

  8. or when you're going to events where parking is out the #######...

I'll actually use the commuter train by parking just outside Dallas when going downtown to events... Parking is ilke $20 a lot of times. I can ride the train round trip for $5 and avoid the traffic getting out.

Reported! Someone has clearly hijacked Paul's account and started posting logical and rational opinions.

  9. Don't hold your breath on this one. I have filed this under "not gonna happen" already. There's a lot of good stuff in there but the bottom line is that measured on GDP, the fed have never collected so little and spent so much. Both sides of the equation will have to give - i.e. more revenues and less spending. GOP will fight tooth and nail on the former - they're already doing that - and the Dems will fight tooth and nail on the latter - that's already happening as well. Gridlock is guaranteed and the country will continue to slide. On the account of both major political parties.

Ain't that the bloody truth. While both sides play games and stick to party ideology, down and down she goes.

The rest pull a spook and prefer to hate the messenger.
