  1. We went together and brought the following:

    Original birth certificate

Passport with K-1 Visa and stamped I-94

    Kenyan Photo ID

    SSN Application

We were in and out in about 15 minutes...it was relatively painless...received Social Security card about 2 1/2 weeks later. It's easy compared to everything else we go through, lol. Good luck with everything and be blessed!

it is that simple if you are still within the window of opportunity. i think its within 6 weeks of entry. after that, the k1 visa is not valid for long enough to get you the social security card and you have to wait til after married. good luck!

  2. it is not true that a professional to do it. you can translate the documents yourself and attach a statement stating that you are proficient in both languages. i think there is a mock-up on this site in the guides. i translated all of my husband's documents and it was fine. you DO have to submit both the photocopy of the original document and the translation with your statement certifying accuracy.

  3. Ouf! guys i can tell you i got married since july 30th and everyday we are trying to have those papers sent but there is always a problem. I want to inform you that today we just sent it, yeeee!!!! we sent the papers today!!!! i thank God for that. However, my wife is coming to see ( Haiti) in 2 days, we have filed the G-1145 and submitted her phone number and email to receive the notification. She gonna leave her phone in the US,and will be staying in Haiti for 17 days, how are NOA1 sent? will we receive our first case status number in the first NOA1?

you can log into uscis and register your case with an account. then you can have notifications sent to you via email or sms. have your wife's mail delivered to a safe location. you don't want to lose that 797 once you do get it.

  4. I wanted to offer a quick summary of our interview today. My husband, baby and I went to the Philadelphia field office to adjust status from a K1 visa to a permanent resident. our appointment was at 10am so we arrived at around 9:30. After a search by some friendly and efficient guards we headed to the third floor. There were quite a few people already waiting. I turned in our appointment letter and we sat down. We were joined awhile later by our translator because my husband is not yet proficient in English. We waited until about 11:50 when we were finally called. We saw a couple of couples taken and interviewed separately. Also a few folks with lawyers, maybe 1/5th of all applicants.

Our interviewer was pretty much what I anticipated, not overly friendly, but also not mean.. typical government worker type, if not a bit more educated than other govt workers I've come across. She mentioned that she had a law degree. I don't know if this is standard for this level of officer. She commented on the baby and asked how old she is as we walked to her office. In the office she made us comfortable and we were all sworn to tell the truth. Our translator was asked to sit behind my husband. She asked for his birth certificate and passport, my proof of citizenship and our marriage document.

She asked me how I met my husband. If I had traveled to Haiti for work or pleasure, how many times I went. Then she asked my husband if he was there for the birth of our child. I told her I had a photo from the delivery and she asked for all the photos. These were all photos of the relationship since my hubby got here. She loved our birth announcement photo and said when she was done she was going to show everyone in the office the baby. She did ask if we had any photos of us in Haiti and I said that we had those at the first interview and I hadn't thought to bring them. She asked my husband one-by-one the questions on the AOS form, ie. have you committed a crime, etc. She asked him is address and phone number and asked if i could also be reached there. She said that everything looked good and that we should get the card within 4-6 weeks but that it would probably be sooner than that.

The whole meeting lasted about 15 minutes. We did not give our joint bank statements, rental agreement, or other documents to substantiate our relationship (other than our newborn baby!).

Three hours later I got an email from USCIS saying that the AOS is approved! w00t!

Thanks so much to all the generous folks who've offered me excellent advice over the past year!

  5. Hi JoyDee

I understand where you're coming from as a K-1 Applicant however as a CR1 applicant also waiting in line for HAITI too. I am telling you since it seems you do not believe Saylin that NVC is the ONLY contact that we have they take the USC and the HAITIAN SPOUSE e-mail and PHONE numbers for all the processing. The K1 Path and the CR1 path are two DIFFERENT paths no matter what country your consultant is because As CR1s WE DEAL ONLY WITH NVC until we get an interview date THAT'S THE ONLY TIME WE GO TO THE PAP for any thing. In fact we do not deal with PAP until the day of the interview. That's what Saylin is trying to get you to understand. We are all here to help each other and because of that we can not tangle different informations together because it is what it is. K1 deals with Consultant where NVC is a rest stop and CR1s deals with NVC and wait there until interview is scheduled by NVC for the Country in which the applicant will have there interviews at so NVC contacts both USC and Spouse no matter what country they're in. good.gif

good luck with your journey. i wasn't trying to "tangle different informations together" i was offering my take on dealings with haiti.

  6. That's not true for IR-1/CR-1 cases. For K-1 cases, you zip through NVC without sending packages, but it's the opposite for spousal visas. NVC does send emails and packages are required. The embassy doesn't play a part until AFTER a case complete at NVC.

From my understanding nvc is just the transfer unit to the consulate. it very well may be different for ir-1, but im unsure why a bureau located in the US would be contacting beneficiaries all over the world. Additionally, The canadian embassy may contact you, but it has been my experience the Haitian one doesn't. Just stay proactive, pp.

  7. Not exactly true about how long it takes to get an interview, see my timeline. It is best to actually request the expedite.. i had to do it twice before i saw action on my case.

NVC does not contact your spouse/partner. In my experience, it was better to email the consulate and ask them to email me the packet 3.5 or we never would have received it.

Call NVC for the case number. Email the consulate and ask them if they have received the case. Email the consulate to ask for them to send you packet 3.5 After that you can email your spouse and do what you need to do.. but certainly don't wait for them to make the first move, because they won't!

  8. Money is definitely a factor, as is safety and health. I DID NOT attend the interview. I DID write a second letter stating my intention to marry my fiance and also with regrets that I could not attend the interview for health and safety reasons. I had this letter notarized and I sent it via DHL so it had original signature and he submitted it with packet 3.5. There is an ongoing advisory for US Citizens to avoid travel to Haiti and there is an ongoing cholera crisis. In addition, it is now prime hurricane season.

Of course, nobody knows what's going to happen. I will say that all of his paperwork was in precise order and my fiance was well practiced for the interview. It was stressful but he was approved.

  9. Yep, you have to have original signatures on everything. I signed a photocopy of my tax documents.. i File online so the IRS never even gets my signature. i'm not sure that was necessary, but i did it! maybe if you sent transcripts instead it'd be better. DHL ships fast.

  10. My hubby had to have extensive work done when he arrived. Be careful who you use in the home country. HE had a lot of work done by "reputable" dentist but when we got here they had filled ALL of his cavities with temporary fillings and we had to have them all re-done. That and five root canals later.. i hope you have a good dental school in your town!

  11. We are in the process of applying for AOS. I am 8 mos pregnant and will definitely deliver by the point of the interview so we'll have a family of three. My income is enough to cover all three of us above 125% of poverty.

I'm insured for medical as a benefit through my work (they pay 100%) and my husband will just be uninsured like millions of other folks in this country. HOWEVER, my infant will be receiving medical assistance because i simply can't afford 3K to add her on to my policy. Do you think this will pose problems?

  12. so i went to the ssn office yesterday and they are telling me that i need to get married first before i apply for ssn....

isnt that going to cause problems for me?

im getting married in a week and i want things to go smooth and not run into any problems...

what am i supposed to do go back to the ssn office with my fiance ?

or should i just not get it until after im married?

When did you enter the country? I think if there's only two weeks left on your I94 you have to wait til after you get married. Do you have the marriage license already? Do you need a SSN to get married in the state where you are? IN my state, PA, my fiance needed a SSN so we applied for it straight away. If you have the license, no worries just go back to the SS after you are married. Bring your marriage license and your passport with your visa.

  13. We know the processing times the processing centers from reading this forum. The I-485 is not adjudicated at MSC, but it stops there to approve your EAD/AP applications and also schedule your biometrics. Then it might go to CSC for processing with no interview, or go to a local office. If i goes to your local office and it is backlogged, then yes, you may be in for a wait. "Family-based" is only a VJ term. You're right though; the I-485 is not listed for processing times for CSC so you'll have to trust our estimates. Good luck.

I trust the processing times from the USCIS over those on this website. If you look at the large service center processing schedules it says they adjudicate "employment-based adjustment applications" Still not convinced that they do Family based AOS over there. why would they indicate employment based only? I'm not saying you are wrong, just not convinced!
