Step 5. Report Your Change in Citizenship to the Social Security Administration

The Social Security Administration requires any person who has a change in his or her immigration or citizenship status to report that change to the Social Security Administration (see Your Social Security Number And Card ).

Reporting this change is actually to the benefit of you, the new citizen. Why?

The social security database will be updated showing you as a US citizen. This database is shared with all federal agencies and many state agencies further validating your US citizenship status with the federal and state governments. With your social security records updated showing you as a US citizen, it will be much easier in the future to apply for and receive all social security benefits entitled to you. If you ever have to replace your social security card, obtaining a new card will be easier now that you are a US citizen. Lastly, in some states, certain disability benefits are only available to US citizens. By changing your citizenship status with the Social Security Administration, you will ensure you receive all disability, retirement, and social security benefits for which you qualify as a US citizen. You must report the change by completing Form SS-5 and by visiting your local Social Security Administration office in person. The change cannot be done by mail. To find the office nearest you, see Office Locator.

When you visit the Social Security Administration office, you must bring proof of US citizenship such as your Certificate of Naturalization or your US passport and some other form of picture ID such as a driver’s license. You must also bring the completed Form SS-5 or you can just obtain the form there and complete it while you are waiting.

Your will be interviewed by the Social Security Administration office staff. They will verify your citizenship and then update your records. Updating your social security records will not result in a new social security card being issued to you unless there were restrictions on your old card. If you would like a new social security card, make a request for one during your interview with the office staff.

I actually have not applied for a passport yet, wanted to update my SSN first but have not been able to make the trip downtown just yet. I hope to get this all done in march
I can't wait though to get my Passport and I will probably also apply for one of those Passport Cards! Exiting!!
And I think Jimmy is right I didn't even think about that, I think you only have to start over if you MISS the ceremony twice. My mind may have been blurry about that detail

I answered and he then told me I was wrong and I was like no I know this is right, but then started getting confused. So I went back to solo studying as well. LOL. I had my Oath Ceremony today and it was a beautiful ceremony with 63 people from 28 Countries. The Gentlemen who did my interview was also there for USCIS and after the ceremony we all chatted for a few minutes and he said he loves his job so much, cause usually during the interviews they really don't get to know the Applicants very well cause they have so many interviews that they just rush through and focus on the questions and all that important stuff but he loves to be a part of the oath ceremonies and get to know the new Americans even better afterwards.
It took almost 2.5 hours but I enjoyed every minute of it! Good luck to everyone else, you are almost there!

    Thank you all so much
I just got home! I was recommended for approval but he said it could be a couple of months until I will get my Oath Ceremony letter. I didn't like to hear that lol but I guess they don't do very many Ceremonies here, so now we are back to waiting
    Here is my experience.
My Appointment was at 10am and I got there at 9:40am (my interview letter mentioned that because there is not very many seats that we shouldn't arrive any more than 30 minutes before our Interview Appointment. The Lady at the Window was very nice and asked me for the interview letter, my passport and my Green Card. I handed everything to her and she thanked me and said they will call you in as soon as it is or time!
I took a seat and waited. A few minuted later a lady came back in and asked for her Mother in Law.. she was very happy and cried and said she had passed I was so happy for her that I almost started crying as well
Then the next guy came back.. He was with his lawyer, most people were there with a lawyer which at first intimidated me, I thought did I miss something? Anyways the guy had not passed and the lawyer explained to him why not right in front of me. When he was sworn in he was asked to and he just said yes, and then the IO asked can you explain to me what this means and what the word truth means? Apparently he couldn't. He then was asked 5 Questions for the Civics test and failed all 5. He then also said no to ALL yes and no Questions even the ones like would you defend the constitution and would you join the military in a war situation and all that. So the Lawyer told him not to worry and he would get another interview letter in 60-90 days and he should start studying again. So I thought.. well... I guess it does happen that people fail this... dang.. I felt and for him.
So I was next. The IO was a nice younger guy and introduced himself with his name. He took me to his room and all my paperwork was already in front of him.
He asked me to read "Which State has the most people" And then asked me to write "California has the most people"
Then he immediately went to the Civics test, my Questions were
    1. There is 4 amendments to the Constitution, describe one of them
    2. Who Vetoes Bills
    3. During the cold war what was the main concern int he US
    4. If the president can no longer serve who becomes president
    5. What was one reason Colonists came to America
    6. What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment
    I answered all Questions correctly.
He asked me if I wanted to submit any other Documentation that USCIS doesn't have yet that has both my and my husbands name on it, so I gave him the HUD from when we bought a house last year and some more bank statements from the last two years, he seems to be satisfied with it and just filed it to the other gigantic stack of paperwork. He then went on to go over my application, asked if I wanted to Change my name or not and the yes and no Questions and then gave me all my IDs back. He said hang on to that Green Card for now you are not a Citizen yet but you will not need this much longer and we will take it back at your Oath Ceremony. You should be receiving a letter to come to your oath in the next few months. ( I was hoping he would say weeks but oh well it is what it is ) He said they would run one last background check on me but as soon as I would get that approval and the last signature from his boss I will get scheduled for oath...
That was it, It only took 10-15 minutes and it was a lot easier than expected Im still glad its over with though\Good luck to everyone else that has interviews coming up And fingers crossed it will be as smooth as it was for me for all of you
Back to being patient back to wait

Just one finger sounds like a dream He did all of my fingers several times and some still were rejected after the 3rd and 4th time... sigh... Oh well its fine either way we just roll with the punches Time to start studying though I want to make sure that I got them down cause I know I will be nervous that day... And don't want this to get in my way
can't wait to see when your Interview is.. have the feeling it will go fast
