  1. Does anyone know when we should expect the extension letter? My husband's drivers license expires on the 21st of October and we don't have biometrics until the 17th. I know, I know, it's our fault for waiting to send it in. But, does anyone know? :innocent: Thanks,

Didn't the NOA automatically extend the Permanent Residence status for a year? It is mentioned in that notice. Or at least in mine (?)

  3. I have a question...

Do you have to send items in 2, 4 and 5....

They know #2 by typing the SSN on a system.

4 and 5..... You are married and that is why you are submitting I751..

I am finalizing my package and try to figure it out, if I have missed something. :innocent:

No, I don't think you have to. I just threw them in, JUST IN CASE! I swear, if they need me to install a cam in our house so they could see how we live as a couple, I WOULD! LOL.

#2 - I thought that is is an important document, and had to be done when I changed my name, so it shouldn't hurt if it's in there.

#4 - I think this was submitted when I applied for AOS. Not needed, but I have this along with #5, most of the time.

#5 - I think if you have this, it's good to throw this one in there. Not all couples who got married by law, also get married in church. And for some marriages, sharing religious beliefs is imperative.

There are also other redundant stuff that I threw in there. For instance, that tax documents -- I had the transcripts and accounts for both 2011 and 2010. But I also included our 1040 forms and W2s. I read from other posts here that if you have the transcripts and/or accounts, you don't need the forms and W2s.

I am still collecting evidences, in the event that they send an RFE. Sometimes I feel that this is a never-ending process! Goodness.

  4. This is what I sent them :/

    In a folder --

    1. I-751, filled out and signed, along with photocopy of green card, front and back

    2. personal check $590

    3. Photos. Maybe 20 of them, from 2010 til present. On the back of each photo, I put date, location, and names of the people on the picture (and how they are related to us).

In a binder with heading, "Evidences of Relationship" --

    1. Photocopy of my passport showing married name

    2. Photocopy of social security card showing married name

    3. Licenses showing same address

    4. Certificate of Marriage from NY State Dept of Health

    5. Certificate of Marriage from a Roman Catholic Church

    6. Statements of joint Bank Accounts (checking and savings, for 3 different banks)

    7. Photocopy of shared credit cards, bearing the same card number (4 different banks)

    8. Photocopy of shared debit cards, bearing the same initial numbers (same banks as #6)

    9. Shared health insurance plans (former and current; printed from the provider's website, showing husband as dependent;

    and photocopy of cards)

    10. Shared dental insurance plan (printed from provider's website, showing husband as dependent)

    11. Statements/policies for shared auto insurance plans (for his car, and my car)

    12. Statements for home insurance plan bearing both our names

    13. Statement from home insurance provider bearing both our names, regarding the claim on a recent accident at home

    14. Statement of retirement plan showing husband as beneficiary

    15. Printed page from the company where I have my IRA in, showing husband as beneficiary

    16. Life insurance plan of my husband showing me as beneficiary

    17. Statements of utility bills bearing both our names (water and gas)

    18. Tax transcripts and accounts for 2011 and 2010, both federal and state, showing joint filing

    19. Tax document from a bank, addressed to both of us

    20. Photocopy of the US Treasury check, address to both of us, for our tax refund (we overpaid)

    21. Forms filled out for my home country's consulate general when I reported my marriage to them, along with my change of name

    22. Travels to Jamaica, Spain; cruise to Bahamas, and watched concert in Michigan (tickets, hotel reservations, flight itinerary, and boarding passes (no kidding, i saved even if they're falling apart!))

    23. Netflix envelope showing both our names

    24. Home Improvement contracts signed by both of us (basement repairs, basement estimates, from 2 contractors); estimates from the garage door repair guy, addressed to both of us

    25. Photographs of my husband and I ALONG with his family over the last two years (thanksgiving, father's day, mother's day, christmas, christening). I was after the photos where his family was in the picture.

    26. Lease from our previous apartment bearing our names (this one, I kind of just threw in because this was BEFORE we got married; but won't hurt)

I could only hope and pray that things go smoothly :(

  5. What this cover letter you all talking about was that required. I don't beleive I submitted that much evidence however I did submit more than I did when I originally applied 2yrs ago. Listed below is what I submitted, hopefully its enough:

All document has both names and our current address:

    1. Copy of GC front and back

    2. Copy of Lease

    3. Copy of 2011 Tax return (1040 only)

    4. Car insurance and titles

    5. Medical insurance/Dental/Vision

    6. 5 different utility bills

    7. Marriage licence

    8. Son's Birth Certificate

I don't know what the cover letter is, too :( And my husband didn't have any other signature there, apart from the one on I-751. Additional documents to I-751, I put in my A# and my signature. That's about it.

I also sent copies of numerous documents. But it is in their hands now. I think your son's birth certificate has significant bearing. When we went to see a lawyer, the first thing he asked: "Are you pregnant?" The impression I got from that was that, it was great card to have in this.

Is it just me, or does this proceeding cause too much distress? :(

  6. oh yikes, wish i had known about this earlier. but I found a local office here so will go there and get the transcript.

we are sending 8 months of bank statements with 2 statements from when we got married in 2010 (first two months of our marriage), will that be sufficient? or send more? The package is already looking huge!

You can send anything that can support that you have been living as a married couple in the last two years. Gym memberships, phone plans, insurances (medical, dental, vision, life), retirement plans, shared credit cards....

I sent in a 3" binder with all the evidences, including agreements and estimates we signed with the contractors, when we had our basement repaired. I can not do anything else about it at the moment, but I still can not relax :( When I was at the Fedex facility ready to send in the whole thing, I was reviewing stuff at the last minute. Even until now, I'm still trying to think what I could have possibly overlooked.

These proceedings could be nerve-racking as they can change people's lives :( All I can do is hope that they approve it, and respond to whatever they ask for, if they do

  8. Why don't you order your tax transcripts instead? you can get them by fax or by walking into the nearest IRS office, they are free, consist of a few pages, and are sufficient for USCIS purposes without any need to submit the W2s.

No NOA yet :( I was hoping to get it today.

if I go to an irs office, will I get it right away? Or do they simply order it for me and then id have to wait for it to be delivered to my place?

I'm sorry about your NOA. It should come not too long now.

  9. As an American male I wanted to give you my opinion (and it is only my opinion) based of my past marriage. My ex wife passed away years ago but her family was big on getting together and parties and such. I was not so excited about going to all of these parties but I did because it made my ex happy and she did not have to lie for me. She was always ready to attend all of my family gatherings as well. If your husband wants to attend then you should attend with him. After all, it is his family and even if he does not tell you, I am sure that he wants for you to get along with his family just as you want him to get along with your family. How would/do you feel if he makes excuses to not join in on your family's gatherings? If his family goes to the trouble to try to include you then try going. As you get to know them better you will feel much more comfortable with them as well. You are not attending to make them happy, you are attending as your husband's wife and that will make him happy.

Thanks for your reply. This definitely brings some light to the issue and I am willing to do this for my husband, at least (if not only for him). Sometimes when I am with his mom and sister(s), they talk about the other in-laws and I just feel like putting my earphones on. It is not a discussion about me, but I feel so bad for the person spoken about. Unhealthy.

Although it is not applicable (since my family is in the PH), but if my husband does not want to attend any of my family gatherings, that is totally fine with me and totally fine with my family. I know that for a fact because I hardly see my brother-in-law and things are good.

  10. Some families are more social than others. I don't think the dominant number of females has any real aspect in this.

I feel it has something to do with it because they are the ones who make a deal out of it, haha.
Have you discussed this with your husband to see what his feelings are in attending these social functions? If he is really close to his family it may be hard to ask him not to go. Maybe some type of compromise can be made such as you attend maybe every other and let him go to the others by himself. I was kind of in the same boat with my ex-wife's family. They are Mexican and had parties all the time which I really hated going to. I would go maybe once every couple of months just to make an appearance and say I was busy with work or something else on the other occasions. I never stopped the ex from going though. Good luck.

Yes, have been. And he usually says that he is already used it and I tell him, well I'm not used to it. I tried that trick of not attending most of them and just showing up once in a while, just to be there. But you can only find few excuses. It makes me sad when I have to ask my husband to lie for me. To have him say that I have work to do, la li la. But actually, I could make it, if I wanted to. When I don't attend, I usually hear undesirable stories about me. Not really happy ones.

And of course, I never and I never will stop him from going. He is free to attend the family gatherings or any other gathering he feels reasonable to attend to.

  11. Most of the nice spots in the Philippines are beach-setting. I guess Vigan is historical, but may not be as romantic. Why not take her to Thailand or Indonesia? ^_^ Bah, most of Southeast Asian countries are known for the nice beaches/resorts. Ah, Malaysia? ^_^

Sorry, not many ideas :( Argh, take her to France. There it would be romantic without the beach-setting :) The "no beach" restriction is tricky because most of the countries in the Pacific, including (and especially) the Philippines would definitely be inclined to that :(

  12. I'm married to an American with mixed European descent (although, Italian is dominant). The family has more females than males. He is the only biological son (he has a step brother living in another state) and he has two sisters. Plus, an unmarried aunt. Expectedly, in a crowd dominated by women, stories -- both constructive and destructive, are always there. Also, gatherings and parties are almost ... a given.

I am not a very social person. We believe in strong family ties, but that is usually not expressed in attending gatherings or holding parties. As our life in my home country did not sail as smooth as other lives would, we are usually busy trying to find means to live and survive, instead of buying dresses and shoes to attend gatherings. In other words, luxury is not really on top of the priority list (if it is even on the list).

My question is -- in the US culture, is attending family gatherings considered obligatory for "immediate" family members? I do not want to disappoint anyone, especially family members. More importantly, I do not want to hear any saddening story about me in the family, just because I did not cooperate. If it is something that I, unfortunately, have to endure, then I guess, so be it.
