  1. When my fiancé (now husband) had his interview at Rio they had 9 K1 interviews to do. He said they had about half with the petitioner and half without. I was unable to make it for his interview, but it didn't hurt us in the least. It actually had no bearing whatsoever on his interview. Basically my husband's interview consisted of 4 questions and that was it. The ones he was asked were:

How did you meet your fiancée? (Gave a short answer, asked if he would like more background and complete history, he said it was not needed.)

Your fiancée came twice to Brazil right? (Short answer, from X month to X month and X month to X month.)

What does your fiancée do for a living? (Short answer, just told the place.)

What do you plan to do when you arrive in the US? (he did a more complete and long answer, by the middle of it the officer was done writing and was looking at his computer.)

After this he was given back some of the papers that he had submitted, such as his original birth certificate and was instructed to speak to another lady to get a green slip and then went on to pay the shipping fee for the passport. The interview took about 4-5 minutes and no extra evidence that we brought was checked at all. We did submit evidence when I had originally submitted the I-129F, such as photos, copies of airline information from my two trips there, emails (maybe 4-5), cell phone records (from the most recent month), and a few other things. Nothing too much, just a few samples of each item listed on the guides that we had. For the interview I had sent him the originals of the evidence I submitted with the petition and then more recent evidence such as more recent emails and cell phone records, just in case it was needed.

  2. It should look like this...

Also, you might already know but just in case, for an approved visa she will also need to pay TNT for delivery of the visa. That varies in cost depending on where it'll be sent to. For my husband it cost him R$30.00 to his home right outside Rio. After my husband's interview he was given a green paper, told about the package that would arrive. Then he had to go down to the first floor, fill out a form for TNT (to deliver the passport and brown envelope) and paid the fee.

  3. My husband just went a few days prior to his interview as well to pay for it. He did hear from someone on the day of his interview who went to Citibank to pay their fee and Citibank tried to tell them they had to pay the Tourist Visa fee as well. Which they didn't, they just needed the K1 Visa fee. My husband also took a copy of his interview letter with him when he went to pay it, to make sure they were giving him the right fee to pay for the visa his interview was for. I had also read about someone being told they needed to pay the Tourist fee as well prior so we thought it was better to take the interview letter along, just in case.

  4. My husband had 6 photos printed for his AOS from K1 to send in, the passport style photos. They all came printed together on one sheet, we just have to cut them ourselves. The problem is that one side where two of the photos top section would be, above his head, seem to be cut too close to the top of his head in comparison to the other 4 photos. So when I send them in 4 will have space above his head in the photos, and 2 will be pretty much even with the top of his hair. Am I correct in thinking that this will a problem for those two? I don't really want to spend another $10 for 2 more photos, but I guess if I have to then I have to. Another option would be that we just include the 4 good photos and not file for the advance parole. Currently he has no plans to leave the country for any reason. If a reason did come up, he probably still wouldn't be able to leave as we wouldn't have the extra funds to cover the cost of him traveling to Brazil and returning. And currently our plans were not to travel back there until at least next year at the earliest. We were going to file the advance parole papers anyway, just since it can be included with no extra cost, but it's not necessary for us.

I guess my question is if we did send in the two "not so perfect" photos with the advance parole form and we received an RFE for the photos, would it cause a problem for the rest of the his AOS package such as the EAD and Green Card?

Or would it be better to just not send in the form for advance parole since we won't actually need it.

  5. Not sure if this is the right spot, but I saw this today and haven't seen it posted on here yet. If it has been already, then I apologize for posting it again.

    USCIS News Alert

In November 2010, USCIS transferred approximately 36,000 Immediate Relative petitions from our California Service Center to our Texas Service Center. We anticipated that this redistribution of work would result in more timely adjudication of these petitions. Due to a number of unforeseen circumstances at our Texas Service Center, many of these cases have not been processed and are beyond our estimated processing times. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may have caused you and we are making every effort to remedy this situation as soon as possible.

On Feb. 7, 2011, we implemented a rapid response plan to expedite the adjudication of these petitions. We have transferred a large number of these Immediate Relative petitions back to our California Service Center to take advantage of resources currently available to immediately process these cases. Petitioners will see an action such as an approval, denial or a Request for Evidence (RFE) on their case from our California or Texas Service Centers by the end of February. Additionally, we have briefed the Department of State’s National Visa Center about these cases.

We encourage you to monitor the progress of your case by accessing My Case Status online. If you do not see any action on your case, such as an approval, denial or an RFE, by March 1, 2011 you may contact USCIS at: I-130Inquiries.Tsc@dhs.gov

We remain committed to the prompt resolution of all pending cases and will provide updates on our progress in the coming weeks.

  6. While waiting for my husband's I-693 to be finished in a week or so we're working on the other things we need for his AOS. After reading a few topics on here about the I-864 and the I-864A, I'm not sure which we should use.

I am currently a full-time student looking for employment, but as of right now I am unemployed (and have been since focusing on school). So I have no income to show for (other than financial aid and odd jobs I help my grandmother with that she pays me for) and have not filed taxes. My mother is going to be our co-sponsor (she was also the co-sponsor for the K1, the I-134). Our household consists of my father and mother (who file taxes married but separate), my husband and myself, and my nephew (adopted son of my parents). So in total there's 5 living in the household. My mother makes around $50,000 so looking at the poverty guidelines, her income looks to be enough.

Which form would be better for us to do? I know that I'm the main sponsor even though I have no income, so I'm assuming I will still fill out an I-864 on my own regardless? Also, for my mother's would I include myself in the household size? Or just my father, nephew and my husband as the immigrant she is sponsoring?

  7. Got it done today. Went to the Polk County Health Department. The civil surgeon was out of the country so we have to go back in a couple weeks to pick up the signed form in the sealed envelope, but we got everything that we needed to do there done today. It cost us $220. $85 for the varicella vaccine, $60 for the MMR and $30 for the Td then $45 for the administration of the vaccines. It doesn't look like we were charged for the transcription part, just what the needed vaccines cost.

  8. I'm trying to find a place to get my husband's I-693 done around the Des Moines area, but haven't had much luck. I called the county health department and their vaccination costs are a bit high. I was wondering if anyone else knows of a good place to go to get the transcription done and some last vaccinations. He had his medical exam done last summer, so he doesn't need that done. I tried to search in the "Civil Surgeons who DON'T rip you off" thread, but there's nothing that I could find for anyone in the Des Moines area.

    Thanks.

  9. My husband and I want to register our marriage at the Brazilian Consulate in Chicago, but are confused about the requirements. We tried to email the consulate to find answers, but didn't get very far. Maybe someone on here will have a better idea as to what we need to do. We are confused about the part of showing single status before marriage. The website isn't very specific so we're not sure how we go about showing our single status prior to marriage. He is a Brazilian national and I'm the US Citizen. How do we show single status for each?

    Thanks.

  10. For my husband it seemed to go pretty fast during the whole process.

I submitted everything on April 14th of last year. It took about 63 days from the NOA1 to NOA2. No RFEs or touches during that time, just went from initial processing to approved. It spent about 4 days at the NVC and then was received in Rio about 5 days later. Once we had confirmation that they had received it we emailed the consulate asking about our interview date. We received an email response with the date and time and then on the 15th of July we received the packet 4. His interview date was on August 24th. It took about 127 days or 4 months from the NOA1 until the interview.

  11. I have a credit card account that I had before I was married in just my name. I added my husband on before we were married as an additional user on the account and the credit card is now showing up on his credit report. It has been on there for the past three months since I added him as the additional user (before we were married). It's a card through Capital One. I was under the impression that additional users did not have it added onto their credit, but I guess sometimes it happens. Thankfully the card has been in good standing and hopefully this is helping my husband build credit as it's the only account listed for him on his credit report. I also tried to add him as a joint account holder just after we were married and I was told that they weren't able to do that, that we'd have to sign up for a whole new card in order to have a joint account together.

  12. Thanks for this! It gives me an idea of what my husband will have to go through when it's time for him to get a license here in Iowa. He currently is not a licensed driver anywhere so I'm not sure how he'll go about getting one, but if he's able to get the learner's permit like you were that would be fine for him! I'll be interested in hearing how your driving test goes, I've never had to take one thankfully.

  13. When my husband arrived through Chicago it was very easy for us to find each other. I was there about 1 hour before his plane landed. There was very few people there as it was early in the morning and no other planes were landing at the same time. I just waited in the seats getting a spot partly between both doors thinking people would come out of both. The plane that landed about 40 minutes before my husbands came out of one door and then my husband's plane they came out of the other. It was pretty easy to figure out which door they were coming out of cause it was the only one with people exiting. While he was one of the first ones off the plane and to the customs area, he was the last one to come through since his POE was horrible and they tried to find any way they could to deny him and send him back.

  14. Listen to them sometimes: When non-English native speakers speak in their language, from time to time they will toss in an English word. That's because words are not necessarily always translatable to other languages.

I have noticed this. When my husband is speaking Portuguese I'll hear him say an English word and he doesn't even realize he does it. Same when speaking English, he'll say a word in Portuguese by accident, though that one he has to catch cause I never notice that. It was more noticeable when I was with him in Brazil. His mother speaks a little English, but they always spoke in Portuguese as none of his family really speaks English (just him). And I know almost no Portuguese at all, so I would hear him speaking in Portuguese every place we went or with anyone he spoke to and it was easy for me to hear the English words come out from time to time. Now the only time he's speaking Portuguese is when he talks to his family over Skype.
