    This is not true. The passport agencies do not process applications for people without an appointment.

    Actually in New York they do. And what happens is that if a person with an appointment at 8:00 am comes at 8:00 am but a person without an appointment comes at 7:45 am, the person without an appointment gets served first because they came first. If you read some of the reviews on yelp below, you will see that New York has a non-appointment line. I am not sure if you are from NY, but here things can be a bit different from everywhere else because of the 8 million strong living in nyc. Oh, and btw I am talking about the New York Passport agency, not a post office or a courthouse.

    no, im just gonna wait until im within 14 days of my trip to apply for same day

    I heard that although you should make an appointment, it's still a first come, first serve. FYI, so even if a person without an appointment gets there before you, they will be served first.

    That is ridiculous. But it's NY so there's always a wait.

    One more question, can you apply for passport there as well?

    no, but the post office is across the street, so a lot of folks just walked over. The sooner you apply for a passport the better. Since they take away your green card, you can't travel until you get your passport.

    If you need to travel within 2 weeks of becoming a citizen, do not apply at the post office. Instead set up appointment at the New York Passport Agency before you naturalization day. The New York Passport agency does same-day or next day passports.

    Question, how was long was the ceremony? Were you in and out of there I'm about 3 hrs?

    Hey Triniphone,

    Here's the short answer. Got there for 8:30 am, didn't leave until 12:30 pm. Walk with a lot of patience. The actual part with the judge and oath only takes like 15 mins (for us from about 12:00 to 12:15), the rest of the time we were doing administrative stuff.

    To all who will have there Oath Ceremonies at Cadman Plaza EAST,

    First of all, it's cadman plaza east not cadman plaza west. BEWARE. To get there, take the A-train to High Street. It might be the closest station. Although you could definitely take the 4/5 to borough hall and walk.The ceremony was due to start at 8:30 am. I got there around 8:15 am. Don't go too early because the earlier you go, the more patience you need to have. Of course don't come late either. I would suggest somewhere between 8:15 and 8:30. Security was kinda hostile, but ignore them....brooklynites! lol) If you bring your phone, after you go through security you will have to check in your phone. You will have to go to the 2nd floor for the court room, your guests will need to go to the 3rd floor in the cafeteria to watch the ceremony via live feed. I carried my husband but I might advise you to not bring a guest. I mean they have to wait 3-4 hours just to see the thing on TV. Anyway, once we got to the 2nd floor, we were all lined up to go into the courtroom. Be sure that you have already answered the questions & signed the back of your Oath Ceremony notice form. If you haven't already signed it they will ask you to sign it while you're in the line. Anyway, we all got into the courtroom and were seated in order by one of the court officers. We were also given a packet that contained stuff like a cover for your Naturalization Certificate, oath of allegiance form, letter from the president, passport application etc etc. By the time we were all seated, it was about 9:10. Okay then we were told that we will be called up row by row (in order of which we arrived) to submit our old green cards. Be sure you bring all old green cards and old employment authorization cards. After submitting these cards we needed to check our naturalization certificates to make sure all the info on it was correct, and to sign it. If some of your info is incorrect and you don't realize it on the day of the Oath Ceremony, apparently you have to pay $200 to get your info changed later on (that's what we were told by the court officer). Anyway there were 274 of us, so this process took all of like 2 hours. People were very impatient....this is NY, we are all always busy. lol. After that segment, they spent like 30 mins calling up people who wanted to change their names to collect some type of certificate or something. Alright then we had to wait 10 mins for the judge to arrive. We were warned that if we were to go out of the courtroom we needed to make sure to come back in before the judge arrived because once the judge arrives the courtroom is closed and you will not be able to enter so your oath ceremony would have to be re-scheduled. Finally the judge arrived, we said the oath of allegiance. She declared us US citizens, then we said the pledge of allegiance. She then said a few words and left. After this, we were called up in the order in which we arrived, to collect our naturalization certificates. Once collected, we were allowed to leave. This process will take all morning so make sure you don't have anywhere else to go in a hurry. Walk with a book and a lot of patience...it took 4 hours but I know it was worth it.

    And really? I guess that is something new they are doing cuz my interview two weeks ago they didnt ask me if I wanted to wait for my oath letter.

    Yeah I was really shocked. If I knew that they would offer, I would have been prepared to stay. I think that some immigration officers may offer and some may not.

    Hi All,

    Today I had my interview at Federal Plaza in Manhattan. My interview appt was for 8:00 am. My hubby and I arrived at the building around 7:35 am, went through security and went to the 7th floor. We submitted our application at one window and then waited to hear my name. There were tons of people in there so we expected to have to wait a while. I was eventually called around 8:30 am. The officer who called me seemed to be a quiet, gentle man. He led me back to his office and made me swear to tell the truth. After we sat down, he asked me for my passport and green card. He then started to look through my very, very thick file for 'stuff'. All this time, he's silent and I am silent (for what seemed like an eternity). He really seemed to be a man of little words. He then asked me about my marriage certificate. He said he knew that there was a copy in my file but he couldn't seem to find it. I gave him a copy I had brought. More silence while he is flipping through my file. Then he went through my entire application asking me all of the questions that I had already filled in on the application, then the 'Yes'/'No' questions, then more silence as he looked through the file yet again. He seemed to be really thorough and wasn't in a hurry. So I just waited in silence. He then asked me the 6 civics questions:

    1. Who came to america as slaves?

    2. Who makes laws?

    3. Who is the vice president of the United States?

    4. What's the highest court in the land?

    5. How many amendments are there in the constitution?

    6. Why did the colonists fight the British?

    For the last one, I hesitated at first and then I remembered "Taxation without representation".

    After we did this, more silence while he filled out paperwork. Then I read "Who can vote?" and wrote "Citizens can vote". He then asked me to sign a ton of documents.

    After that, more silence while he was looking through my file (he wanted to make sure I had all my tax documents submitted) and typing in things on his computer. He then said because you are filing through marriage, I need proof. I thought that they had copies of everything from my green card days (which they did). So he was able to look through my file and find the things that I had already submitted, but I also gave him our joint health insurance and car insurance. More silence. Then he finally said, "Everything looks good". He got out his stamp and stamped "Approved". The entire thing took like 20-25 mins because of all the many periods of silence. But I liked the fact that he was very gentle. Anyway in the end he printed out a sheet of paper and then asked me if I wanted to wait now to get my oath ceremony letter or if I wanted to have it mailed to me. He told me that I would have to wait 1-2 hours. I was lost as to what I wanted to do because I had a ton of things to do (I am a teacher) and my hubby who was with me had to go back to work. But I felt it would be great to know when the oath ceremony would be right away. Anyway, in the end I just said I'd have it mail to me. And he walked me out. Of course when I told my hubby about the oath ceremony letter, he was like, we should have just waited on it. Oh well! Can't change that now. I'm approved, Praise God!

    Hi guys,

    Did you carry passport photos to the interview? If you did, did the IO ask for them? I see that the "interview Document Checklist" says that they are not required but recommended. I have my interview tomorrow, and I just realized that I forgot about the photos. I'm thinking about going to get them in a couple hours. But I wasn't sure if I should. What was your experience?

    Actually, there is a Walgreens close by, so I am just going to get them. I'm thinking they are for in case the original photos submitted with the application were invalid. So it makes sense to carry them.

    Hey,

    All I carried were actually my passport, greencard, and proof of Selective Service. She only took my passport and green card because she printed out the proof of SS for herself. As for the ticket, yeah I had to go to the Driver responsibilty program because they added two points to my license. If you claimed you were cited on your application then the IO is going to ask you how/why/when. I put no, hence the reason my IO didn't ask any of that.

    Judging by the threads I read from this forum, its very rare that IOs ask for weird stuff, maybe I saw 1 or 2 cases. All the other ones were quick 10-15min interviews. I can't tell you exactly what's going to happen with your interview as I'm waiting for one myself but I guess we can just prepare what we can. Personally, I'm bringing taxes for the last 5 years just because I have the copies. I think F-1 visa is a overkill. If you happen to have I-94 or other documents nearby, why not just make a copy and bring it? If you can't find one, I wouldn't spend time on it. That's just me.

    Ok, thanks. I have some of the stuff I used to file for the green card and for removal of conditions. They are still in one folder with the photocopies, so I'll just bring the folder. It won't hurt even if they may not all be necessary. thanks much

    Traffic tickets are no big deals.

    I had several parking tickets, a $300 speeding ticket, and an $80 speeding ticket, all in which I paid off.

    I didnt mention this to my IO nor did she ask.

    we're going to the same office (filing under different circumstances I know), but what did you carry? Also for the $300 ticket did you have to go into the Driver Responsibility program or did you just pay the ticket and that was it? I read on the N-400 guidelines that once the ticket is below $500, you don't need to mention it. And based on what you stated here, I imagine that you did not mention the ticket on your application, nor did the IO mention it and that was that right?

    Never go under-prepared. I'm applying under 5yr condition but I'm bringing as many things as I can think of. As for traffic tickets, I'm planning to contact my insurance agent and get some sort of record from him although my last ticket was like from 7 yrs ago. I'd think of it as mini-i751 interview but don't sweat too much about it. Also, they keep all your documents that you sent in with I751, just bring the new ones but also bring a copy of n400 package because sometimes they do ask for it (like copy of your Passport or GC).

    I am not sweating about it, and that's what's now making me nervous. I don't plan to go underprepared, but I just plan to follow the guidelines. However, I guess when I look through the forum, I am wondering why all the extra stuff? ARe the IO's known to ask for extra stuff (beyond the guidelines on the interview letter)? Even like the ticket from 7 years ago. I think they are only concerned about the last 5 years, aren't they? Other examples I've seen include taxes for the last 5 years (vs 3 years), social security cards, past I-20's if you were an F-1 student etc, etc. Believe me, I'm taking this just as seriously as everybody else, but I just want to know if people are sometimes asked for stuff beyond what's advised on the interview letter.

    Dropping in with a few quick questions here. Those of you who received your green card through marriage, what documents do you plan to carry to the N-400 interview? I was just simply planning to follow the guidelines that came with the interview notice, but when I check the forums, it seems like people are going above and beyond (well, they are definitely carrying more than what's stated on the notice). Also, what are the guidelines for traffic tickets? (this is NYC, everybody who drives has some type of traffic ticket). And do you carry copies of the documents that you already submitted with the application? For example, I already submitted copies of my tax docs for the last 3 years with the application. Actually you know what, I guess it won't hurt to carry more copies. Anyway, I just want to know what documents you plan to carry to the interview.

    hi guys,

    dropping in with a quick question. For those of you who received your green card through your spouse, does your spouse plan to go with you to the naturalization interview? I don't think it's necessary because the spouse isn't even allowed to go into the interview room. But from what I've seen on some of the forums people do take their spouses. One woman even said that she went without her husband and her particular IO asked her, "Where is your husband?" Strange, because the husband isn't interviewed. I guess I'm not sure why my spouse needs to go with me if he isn't allowed in the interview room. Anyhoo, just as a safety precaution, I've given my hubby the heads up that we'll need to go together, so he plans to take the day off to accompany me. Any thoughts?
