  1. I need some help. I hope this is the right forum.

I applied for a social security card February 6th, 2012. As of today, I have still heard nothing and when I called, the lady on the phone said I have 2 weeks before my application expires. I came in on a K-1 visa, I got married on March 17th, 2012, send AOS and got the e-mail notification just yesterday April 23rd, 2012.

I'm not sure what to do now. Having looked through the guides, I assumed it's hard to apply for a social security card after your I-94 expires? Mine expired on April 22nd. What can I do now? Since I'm married now and I've sent in my AOS, is it safe to start the process over for the SSN or will they be unwilling because of my expired I-94? Some advice on this is greatly appreciated.

  2. Thank you, but I've already seen that. What I'm worried about is that the lady at the Vancouver Consulate said in order to get it sent to my address, I had to send them an e-mail with the waybill by the end of today (the 13th) but there is still no waybill. DHL has no use for the reference number. So I'm not really sure what to do. I really don't want my passport going to a pick up location 4hrs away (sadly, that was the closest option, blah).

  3. Hey everyone! We just had our medical and interview and passed :) I wanted to have my passport with visa shipped to my address, the lady told me I needed to do that ASAP, but I can't find the waybill CSC says I need. I read that people use the reference ID on dhl.ca but that doesn't work at all. She said I had to do it THAT DAY (12th) or 13th and I'm afraid if I don't get it in time I'll have to travel 4hrs to the nearest pick-up. Definitely not what I want, especially since I don't drive and no access to a vehicle.

What did everyone else do? I really need it shipped to my address! Please help! :(

  4. Thanks so much for all your replies! <3 There's just these few I'm still not too sure on.

I just read that if I wire the money directly to our bank account in the States, that the bank will declare it so we won't have to on taxes or something? Is that true? If we still have to claim it on his US taxes, how does that work?

And for Canadian taxes can I mark 2011 as my departure year, even though I won't be moving until January or February 2012? December 17th is my last day at work, so technically I'm not making any sort of income come 2012, if that helps.

I'm really tax-inept, have noooo idea what I'm doing! Thanks!

  5. Tax questions!

I'm the beneficiary from Canada, finance is petitioner from USA. We're thinking I'll probably move there end of January, beginning of February approximately.

First question, I need to send about $10K to his bank account (won't have my own yet), how will that work with taxes? We just go to H&R Block, what do we tell them?

Second question! How will my Canadian taxes work? All my tax stuff will be in Canada, can my father do it there? Could 2011 be considered my "departure year" even though I'm not leaving until end of January? And for 2012 taxes (I know, I like to plan ahead), we'll be able to just file regularly? I mean jointly of course, we'll be married by that time, but there won't be any silly cross-border stuff to worry about?

And third and final question, I'm closing my bank accounts here in Canada. Even though it's RBC, I'll be in California and all the branches I see in the States are on the East Coast, a little too far to travel if I have to make deposits and whatnot. However, I want to keep my credit card. Don't really know how that works, RBC has an American credit card, right? That won't affect taxes if I switch?

So, kinda more than three questions. Thanks so much for reading! Any info or suggestions are appreciated!

  6. MMR - you require 2 shots to be immune. All you need is your immunization record and if you only have 1 shot then you tell them you need your second shot and bring the record to show them. This is free if you haven't had 2 shots.

    Thank you so much~

Now I'm wondering if you could answer me something else. I know on the Woking Medical website it specially says you need MMR (not "MR" or "MM"). However, on my records, I've have one shot of Mumps and Rubella ('87) and two shots of Measles ('87 and '97). Would you happen to know if that means I only need one shot Mumps and Rubella? I just want to understand this before I go to my doc so I know how to explain. Maybe I'm confused and don't know what I'm talking about, this stuff is hard, ha.

  7. Hi!

I got a blood test done to see what shots I needed. Tdap didn't even show up on the results, and MMR was low or indeterminate. However, when I called to schedule an appointment at my public health unit, they said since I had documented shots for both already, I didn't need to get more and they wouldn't give them to me.

I do have an immunization card stating I had the shots as a child, but if my blood test says I'm no longer immune, will this card be enough? If it's not enough and at the medical exam they say I need them, will they simply give me the shots or send me away?

    Any info is greatly appreciated!

  8. Hello again! I'm here again hoping you can all give me some of your wisdom. :)

My fiance and I are at the point where you schedule the interview at Vancouver. However, I'm wondering how far can you push it back? This is what we want to do.

We want to marry in March. There is nothing planned, we would just have a quick ceremony at the courthouse for that date, so if need be it CAN be rescheduled... though we really want this date, it's our anniversary. However, we still want to make a visit in December for Christmas, but if we get the visa soon, I will enter and won't be able to leave and our date in March is way too close to the 90 day expiry. Are we able to just wait until October (4months since approval, when our NOA2 is about to expire) and request an extension? Is marrying in March a valid reason to get an extension or do you think we'd be denied? Or do you know if we are able to schedule in say, January right now without worrying our NOA2 would expire?

I apologize if I'm a little all over the place, hope this all makes sense. Thanks so much for your time and your replies!

  9. Hello everyone!

My fiance Daniel and I are waiting on Packet 4 and we're gathering what we need for our interview. We decided to get his IRS transcripts, and I had a few questions. If he goes that route, what else will he need? I think I read that he won't need his income tax returns or W2s because they're included in the transcripts, right? So he'll just need his employer and bank stuff?

Thanks so much for your time and any information. :)

  10. Hello VJ! I need your opinions.

I'm going over for a quick visit to the States to celebrate a birthday, and was wanting to bring some of my stuff over in suitcases. A duffel and larger rolling duffel, all they have in them are books and some stuffed animals. Do you think they'll see it in the scan and get suspicious? Should I just wait until I'm for real moving there to take that stuff over? Just wondering if anyone's tried to take over personal belongings ahead of time. I don't want them not letting me take my stuff with me. Thanks so much for reading!

  11. Out of curiosity, how does it work to apply for a licence in the US if you never had a Canadian one? Just the general state by state testing/procedure? or is it different due to immigrating?

I'm wondering this, too! In case I can't get my driver's license in time.

  12. Are you talking about a " G2 " license, like you can drive alone but your not fully licensed for some things?

If so, you can use that to drive in the states yes. I always did with no issues, then again I was not speeding around like a jackass either lol.

I also changed my " G2 " to a full license in Nebraska. Our state only required the written/computer question part. They gave me a full US license from a partial G2 Canadian ( Ontario ).

Thank you for your response, I feel better. :)

  13. I have a problem, hopefully you guys can help me with it.

Some info : I'm 24, I'm from Alberta (I've heard Alberta is the most strict province for licenses :( ), and I'm going to California.

I don't have my driver's license yet. I have a learner's, and have had it for years, so getting the driver's license isn't a problem. But I'll first only receive a probationary license. My fiance and I are hoping to be in the States by the end of this year or early next year, and it'll be two years before I qualify to take an advanced road test to get my full license. Will that be a problem in the States? I know I'll be required to do it all over again when I can get a California driver's license, but until then I want to be able to drive.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!
