The nephew is 10 years old and very smart, having began school in the Philippines at an early age. He's currently in grade 6 and will begin middle school in March.

Are there any provisions for sponsoring the nephew of a US citizen for school? How do all the foreign students go about being sponsored by a US family?

I haven't been on the forum for a while but thanks to visajourney I was able to bring my wife here from the Philippines, get her status adjusted, and she was able to obtain her citizenship. Last month both her parents arrived in the US and are now living with us. Her mother, who had never had a job in her life, and doesn't speak English, is already working. Her father was interviewed for a job at the hospital two days ago and has other options should that not work out. Wondering where I'm going with this? If you're really serious about finding a job it may be necessary to relocate. If you want a job, you should go to states where unemployment is low.

Look at unemployment rates by state and you'll see that the states with the lowest unemployment rates are North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Who wants to live in North Dakota? People who want to work, that's who. Everyone wants to live in California but I believe you'll see California is third from the bottom and they have an unemployment rate of 12.4%, or over three times the rate for North Dakota. I also think that housing prices are probably three times less in North Dakota.

I hire people here where I work and here in Nebraska I've been hiring people throughout the period of the economic downturn seen by much of the rest of the country. Nebraska's current 4.7% unemployment is practically normal rates for the rest of the country even in the best of times.

These states may not be at the top of your list but if jobs, clean air and water, personal safety, friendly people and affordable housing interest you, then take a look at the three states I've mentioned.

I posted this in the "Review" section but I really felt it deserves more attention. We hear so many negative comments about the immigration process that I wanted to share a very positive experience.

As soon as my wife became a citizen, we petitioned her parents and after 6-8 months or so they were finally approved. Since my wife couldn't get time off from work and their English skills and foreign travel experience were either limited or non existent, I went to the Philippines to bring the in-laws back to the US with me. After the typical lengthy flight with long layovers and no sleep we finally arrived in the US.

We entered at Chicago's O'Hare and split into two lines at Immigration - one for US citizens and one for non-citizens. The non-citizen line was very, very long so I prepared myself for a lengthy wait. After a short period in line I presented my passport and the officer asked the reason for my travel. When I replied that I had returned with my in-laws and they were accompanying me, he told me to get them and he'd simply process us all together. He held up my line while I went to get them out of theirs and after a very few questions, he accompanied us all the way through the process, much to the dismay of the US citizens next in line.

The entire process took about 15 minutes and they didn't even look at our bags. I want to say I very much appreciated the help and the kindness of the Immigration official who went far out of his way to make entry easy for us!

My wife is petitioning her parents. We've already paid the AOS fee of $70 and also received "Paid" status for the $400 IV fee. We're running a little late on filing the I-864 Affidavit of Support but her parents are still waiting on their passports anyway. I'd like to remain off the AOS if possible but I'm willing if I need to do so. It's only my wife and I in the household and she's petitioning both parents.

What is her salary requirement? Would it be figured at 125% of the poverty line for 2 people, 3 people, or 4 people? Is there a link to a 2010 I-864P or is the 2009 form linked here still current?

Ok, we've managed to do everything from the initial K-1V all the way through citizenship without any problems but this relative petition process is by far the most confusing thing we've yet encountered. Here's where we are in the process for petitioning parents:

We've completed the I-130 and it's been approved. We've already paid the $70 AOS fee online and it shows "Paid". The next line, " IV Application Processing Fees" shows "Not Invoiced". What's the next step? We haven't yet completed Form I-864. Do we do that now? Is there another fee that must be paid?

Exactly what are you applying for A K1 visa is for unmarried couples but has no bill you pay like that , the Cr1 is for married couples trying to move to the US and that has various bill to pay and then after 3 years you can apply for citizenship. I suspect you are filing for a CR1 ?

This was originally posted in the forum for US Citizens petitioning relatives. I'll re-post and try to make my question more obvious. Thanks anyway.

I found the problem. I didn't have a current enough version of Adobe's PDF reader so I was allowed to download the instructions but not the form. I installed v.9 and everything's fine.

We made the 3-hour drive to Omaha for her scheduled 10:55 AM interview. They called her at exactly 10:55, asked her a few questions about her job, our relationship, and whether she had ever voted or claimed to be a US citizen. She then answered her 6 civics questions and was finished in 20 minutes. They never asked to see any documents and then gave her a form with her oath taking date, back in Omaha on September 29. Kind of a pita to have to make the six hour round trip and miss another day of work again next week but this is the final sage and thank God we'll be finished. It's been a long process...

Oh, btw, she didn't have to do her biometrics. Anyone know why not?
