Hopefully people who did the IR-1/CR1 can shed more light, but I was wondering what date would be on her green card? Would it be the date she entered the US as listed on her I-94? Or is it a later date when the green card is officially approved by USCIS?

I doubt consulate would grant extension in your case, its not an emergency or medical requirement or things as such, what you are looking for is easing the immigration situation for yourself. May be its better to bite the bullet and come before Visa expires. You will only have to fill up forms for removing conditional residency, you won't be paying no more.

Sometimes you can ask for extension from the Consulate prior to 6 months time period expires. But if you don't notify Consulate and don't use your Visa within the 6 month time frame, no you can't renew it.

On side note-- since its CR-1, you can always come to US, live for a couple of days and go back to your country or wherever for a few months or so.

So, what you are saying is that it is the consulate discretion to renew or to grant an extension for CR1 visa. But, if it is IR1 visa, you would get an extension for the visa, am I correct? Thanks a lot.

Not all airports are designated as US ports of entry.

But if an inbound flight is from outside US borders, it can only land at airports that are.

Well, if you want your significant other to come in to Atlanta or DC area, you just book the flight from Nigeria whichever airline is flying to those specific destinations in the US and that is it. A flight that comes in from overseas and arrives in the US cities wherever that city may be like Detroit, New York, Washington DC, Raleigh, or Atlanta etc., that Airport is a POE. Choose which city is closer to you and book a flight, that is it. Best of luck.

If you are two hours away from Charlotte, you must live around Raleigh if I am not mistaken. There is an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Nigeria via Ethiopia directly to Washington Dulles. Atlanta is about 5 1/2 hours away from Raleigh, but Washington Dulles is about 3 1/2 hours away. I thought I give you another POE close to Raleigh area. Good Luck.

Hello there, thanks! I'm actually in Greensboro. Raleigh is about an hour away. Atlanta about 6 hours away. I never heard of Washington Dulles. I'll look into it because it is alot closer. Do you know the name of the Ethiopian Airline? I'll try to research it.

The name of the airline is Ethiopian Airline. I like the idea also flying to Raleigh Durham by air Canada or Alitalia, but I doubt if the fly into Nigeria. One has to fly to Europe first and connect to come to Raleigh. Best of luck.

Well, in all fairness, a commercial drivers' license is a different animal altogether and has much higher requirements in the language department.

I agree with kar98 that a commercial driving license is completely different subject. It is clearly stated in the hand book that one has to speak and write English well to get a CDL license.

A helpful answer might include something about the availability of picture tests or Russian language tests in the State of Florida. Your answer was in no way helpful other than making you feel somehow superior. It involved Texas & German situations and is in no way related to Florida Statutes or law.

She won't need a translator to understand roadsigns but it is highly probable that she would have difficulty with "Which way should you turn your wheels when parking facing uphill where there is a curb? Which way should you turn them where there is not a curb?" Now I'm just guessing here, but I'm thinking she is not going to see that printed on a road sign.

A friends wife in Ft Lauderdale was allowed to bring a Russian interpreter.

Know what you mean as my wife did fine with the "signs" part of the exam, but had to take the second written part a couple of times even though her English is great. We came up with a Russian/English version of a driving test somewhere and studied that a lot.

Where are the tricks in those questions? I can't see any, it's plain and simple. Now, the USA has ONE official language: english. Learning it is part of the immigration process and integration effort. I am sorry but speaking english is more than mandatory when driving, the test is just an anecdote. What if she gets pulled over by the police, will she need an interpreter?

Exactly which Florida Statute makes it mandatory to speak English while driving? She is learning English. She speaks it very well actually. But reading a DMV test is difficult for her. If she did get pulled over by the police I am sure she could communicate well enough to deal with the situation. By your standard, all foreigners who travel to America must speak English to drive. I feel certain there are millions of tourists who a fully capable of handling the task of driving without speaking the English language just as I am capable of driving in numerous countries overseas without speaking their native language.

If you insist on going down this road I encourage you and a couple of others to go and start your own thread about who should or should not have the right to posses a driver's license in America. That is not what this thread is about. It is about an immigrant who is here legally, trying to get information about alternative methods of taking the State of Florida Learners Permit Exam so I can get her on the road and teach her how to drive. This will enable her to become a more productive part of our society, and allow her more freedom to do things she needs to do without depending on me for her transportation. As a matter of fact, it will allow her to drive herself to her ESL classes. I am not alone in this endeavor. There are thousands of people like my wife who are working hard to learn the language and assimilate into our society. And there are folks like you who are eager to prevent that from happening.

Your profile does not specify where you are from but I am guessing that you too are not from Florida and therefore probably have little to offer in the way of constructive advice. Thankfully, there are states out there that recognize that not everyone in the world was born speaking English and there are legal immigrants, who, with a little consideration and help, can become productive members of our society.

I checked the Florida DMV website, and they have the handbook written both in Spanish and English. So I assume they give the test in both languages. Here where I live in North Carolina, the test is given in Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and I believe in Russian too. I know it does not help you whether North Carolina let you take it in different languages or not, but it will give some people an idea that speaking English is not a requirement to drive in the US. Hello, my friends here in VJ, i just wanna spread the good news about my visa interview, I was interviewed 05-20-09, and luckily i got the PINK slip!!

The CO ask me a few questions like my name and my petioners name, where he work, where he lives.. Then he ask when is our wedding anniversary I said MAY 17, 2007, he said HAPPY ANNiVERSARY which brought happiness in my heart so i laugh so loud (he's laughing at the same time), and i said thank you,.. Then, he said you are cute couplez upon looking at our wedding pix..

He finally said "Dont forget to bring him pasalubong(presents), because your visa has been APPROVED, good luck and have a happy life in AMERICA"

The CO who interviewed me was so cool, seems i was just talking to a friend, we keep on laughing all the time. Am so happy, very happy, i will be seing my husband so soon, and no distance can break us apart..

I thank God for sending me an angel during my inetrview..

Hey everyone!!!

So, I have great news!!! My husband and I went for his interview today in Abu Dhabi and he was approved!!! He picks up his visa tomorrow afternoon!

Heres how our day went...

First off, when we arrived at Dubai we rented a car, which I think was a good idea if you want to see the city during your stay and (if you can also buy a map before hand... none of the places in the airport had a map)

Woke up later than we would have liked (2 hours later)... (6:30 AM)... left for Abu Dhabi (which is 2 1/2 hours away from where we were staying)... our appointment was at 10:00... we were a tiny bit lost when we arrived so a police car literally took us to where we had to go. We arrived at 9:45, showed the guy outside our appointment letter and my husband's passport. We walked into a second room where they took all car keys, mobile phones, and cameras...everything else we were able to take inside. We then proceeded to a room with benches in it... where we were sitting with a number of other people. After 5 min, a man came in and told everyone to proceed to the other building. We then went over to the first counter which was titled "cashier"...there the lady took our appointment letter and gave us a number. We sat for about 25-30 minutes when they called us up...the man there took my husbands medical exam and passport. We then sat down... another 25-30 minutes later we were called up to another counter... they lady there was Iranian and asked both of us the following questions...

-How did you guys meet?

-When did you guys first see each other in person?

-Did you both see each other before you were married?

-Did you get married in Iran?

-Did you (me) leave right after you were married? (I stayed with him a month)

-What does he plan on doing when he recieves his visa... are you (me) staying with him until he gets his visa and comes to the US? (I'm leaving in June but he's coming soon thereafter...hopefully before the college year starts)

-She asked me whether I have a cosponser...I replied yes, she asked me if he was my father, I said yes again.

That's all I remember from the questions (they were only these kind of things anyway)...

Then she told him that everything was complete in his file and asked for pictures. We had printed about 70 or so pics of when I first saw him in winter of 07, of the month before our wedding when we were together, a couple from our wedding, of the month after our wedding when we were together, and of the 5 months I've been visiting him in Iran. She really liked the photos and went through every single one and said that it shows we are a real couple with a history together. She also wanted to see the wedding album (we flipped the pages on the outside of the glass window between us). She said she was fully convinced and didn't even ask to see the wedding pictures we'd taken with family. She kept his passport and told him to come back the following day to pick up his visa.

We are still waiting for our case to be completed from NVC to see if we can finally be together for our wedding anniversary and it will be a double celebration since my wife is about two and a half month pregnant!!!! i'm so happy, i got approved today, the interview was easy and questions were expected, the CO didn't ask me to show any evidences but i asked her if she wanted to see the photo album and she said ok....she was really nice and she told me that i can come back tomorrow at 3 pm to pickup the visa

My wife just finished the interview and was told to pick up her passport with a visa on Tuesday, 5/12/09. After all the waiting at NVC and writing numerous letters to congressmen and senators, finally every pain and anxiety seems disappeared. It has been very helpful chatting and discussing personal as well as process related issues here on VJ. I wish for all of you who are still waiting a very smooth process and good luck to all.
