  1. I just had my conditions removed and I am now a permanent resident. Got my 12 year card in the mail today yay!

Was just wondering a few things.....

As a conditional resident I was only ever able to get medicaid emergency only, because of my status. Now that I am a permanent resident, will I be able to get full medicaid, or is full medicaid only for citizens? How about unemployment? Do we still have our sponsor or is her role over now?

Another question is, if we have still have to report when we move to the immigration? If we don't become citizens, do we have to do that for the rest of our lives?

And one more question, just out of curiosity. And I don't plan on getting a weapon, don't need one, but I've always wondered if permanent residents are allowed to get a gun permit?

What other new rights & duties did we get now that we have the conditions removed? Or are they the same as for a conditional permanent resident?

  2. Wow I'm embarrassed to hear that he is Belgian. But a lot of the things that you mentioned he did or said, make no sense.

Any Belgian citizen can move ANYWHERE in the EU without having to do paperwork (besides address change). Also it's really impossible to be homeless if you are a Belgian citizen, unless you want to be. There is so much financial help available. I also don't see why he would use someone to move to the US. Belgium has a much better healthcare and social system. If he can't survive in Belgium, he could possibly not survive in the US.

If you have other questions I can help. I'm really sorry you went through all of this.

  3. You can stay a LPR for the rest of your life, no problem. Strictly speaking, you would have to renew your Green Card once every ten years. It's a formality without having to prove anything, done by mail via form I-90 which currently costs $450.

Many people don't renew their cards, however, until they really need it, which is only when you want to travel internationally. Your status as a LPR is even preserved when your card is expired, on the same basis that you are still a citizen of Belgium when your passport is expired.

The N-400 costs $680, plus you the money to get an additional US passport every 10 years, which currently costs at least $110 + $25 = $135.

Wow thank you so much for this clarification. I think I really have no reason to stay permanent resident, especially since Belgium now allows dual citizenship.

Yeah and $450 to replace a missing or lost GC, so hold on to it.

Oh wow, never knew that... I better do hold on to it!!!

  4. I think I will probably want to become citizen next year, but I was wondering for those that do not wish to become citizen and want to renew their 10 year card. How does that go? Do they have to go through the exact same procedure we are going through right now, pay all that money, get another biometrics and then hope you don't get denied or is the renewal process a lot easier. At least we wouldn't have to remove the conditions again. I was just wondering....

Btw, is there a fee to become citizen, and does anyone know how much it is??

  5. I'm in the same boat. I have a couple of friends and I know quiet a lot of people here, but they all have their own busy lives and not much time for socializing. I often try to get closer to people I associate with online or at school but people tend to keep me on a distance. Noone is interested in friendships anymore, esp not with someone who is a little different. Once they become an adult and they have their friends they grew up with, they feel complete and keep everyone else on a distance, so it sucks for all us immigrants who have to start their life from scratch. Luckily I have 2 toddlers, go to school here FT, so I'm pretty busy myself.

  6. I understand a little of what you are feeling. I tried to stay in my husband's country, The Republic of Turkey, until his visa application was approved. It was very hard because I did not run into a single person who spoke English. There were no English magazines or books to read. There were no American TV shows or music. I was offerred a job to teach English, but the fuel prices are so high there, it would not have been worth the long drive. Of course, I missed my family and friends. I think you are so brave to move here from your country. I am sure you love your husband very much.

It is going to take time. Have your family send you books, newspapers, magazines, movies, and music from your country. Keep in touch with friends online. Do not apply for jobs that you really do not want to do, go back to school here and do what you really want to do. You are right. You have been born again. Start building a brand new life bigger and better than the one you had before.

    Best wishes.

That was such a nice reply.... :)

  7. On another note, I had my biometrics yesterday. We were the last group to have the biometrics for that day so the office was very empty and everyone was in a good mood, ready to go home. I guess it took me about 15-20 minutes just because I was the last one of our group of 3 and only 2 computers. 2 of my fingers were rejected as well. I guess that's normal. I asked her what is the next step. She said about 85% will get their card in the mail, 15% will get another interview and 1% will get deported......... Let's pray we can all be in that 85%!

  8. My husband's are done as well. His also had to re-do a couple of fingers because they didn't come out right. The place was pretty much empty when we went in for his appointment. It only took 15-20 minutes. Now back to just waiting.

Just curious and to get people talking...how did you originally come into the US? If it was spousal based, how did you meet your spouse? Dennis came from Canada on a K1 visa to marry me in 2009. We met in 2005 while playing World of Warcraft, but didn't get into any sort of a romantic relationship until 2007 when we met in person for the first time.

My husband and I met on myspace back in early 06.

We also did a lot of chatting and emailing and calling before we met each other. We had our marriage in 06, and this August we will be married for 5 years, with 2 kids....

  9. Where can I find the option to set it as rich text edit?

Well if someone wants to add my updated info.... I received a NOA in the mail today, saying that my conditional resident status is extended with another year... Did everyone get this? This is the same as NOA1, right? It says receipt date: 4/8/11 but I received it today in the mail, the 15th.

I still did not change my address but it came to my current address so I guess we're fine?

  10. I may be wrong and someone please correct me if I am, but I thought as a resident we are not allowed to get any gov aid for ourselves, but you can for the US citizens in your household. That's why we had to get the sponsor. If you get foodstamps or Cash assistance they will not calculate you in it, because you're not a citizen and I am assuming you won't qualify for unemployment for this same reason. But I am not 100% sure.

Well, we got good news and bad news today. Our NOA1 arrived today! It is dated the 4th, I've updated our entry on the list. :)

The bad news is that Dennis was laid off. :( He has been a contract worker in the IT department of this company for a year and a half. Basically he works for a middle company that contracts with another company to provide their IT support. It has nothing to do with him, the company has decided not to work with the middle company anymore. They're still hiring, but through a different company! Does anyone know about filing for unemployment as a permanent resident? I'm basically a stay-at-home mom, his income pays our bills.

My pack was delivered In California on April 08, 2011, 10:58 am and signed for by V Semegi!

  11. Since we did our AOS our address has changed. I meant to let them know but I kept forgetting about it. A few days ago I sent in our pack for the removal of conditions and added to the coverletter that we moved and I put it on our new address (we've lived here for almost 2 years now). I wonder if you think that this is enough or if I should still send in the form for change of address?

  12. Because there is a difference between 1 single incident of a religious nutcase/psychopath killing his friend because of sexual advances and a guy chopping off an evil American's head because he thinks he is going to be rewarded by Allah.

Ok, I take that back. They are both pretty much the same thing. The difference is 1 happens every 15 years and the other happens every 15 days.

Do you not see the difference?

Wow, where do you live my friend? I hear way more about non muslims killing than muslims killing. Turn on your TV! There's lunatics in every race, in every religion. People that go on random killing sprees and kill innocent people are not muslims. This stuff is not even tolerated by God, so I mean you make no point. Plus like the topic opener said, media is very one sided. Unless you watch Independent media, media only has ONE boss, ONE side.

  13. I'm not trying to get anyone worried but I was just wondering, I was at FedEx today to mail of my pack but the lady told me she couldn't send it because it's going to a P.O.box (California Service Center) and she told me Fed Ex doesn't have the keys, I have to go to the post office. So that's what I ended up doing and my pack was sent today through USPS, but now on the forum I saw several people saying they sent their pack through Fed Ex? So now I'm confused? I am assuming the lady was wrong?

Is there anyone that received their green card towards the end of May. I know I'm a little late to file to remove the conditions, but not too late!

  15. I sent in my package today!!!!!!!

I also have a question, did everyone use the postal office to send it through? Last time I went to Fed Ex but now they told me they couldn't send it since it was to a P.O.Box and only the post office has those keys? Never heard that one before...

As far as proof I used 2 affidavits (a friend and MIL), birth certificates of our mutual children, our lease, tax returns from 2009 and 2010 and 4 pages of photos.
