Last week at my husband's oath ceremony, we were pleasantly surprised that the SS department was there. They handed out the form before the ceremony, gave the new citizens time to fill it out afterwards, and then set up an area in the hallway afterwards to take all of the information. Talk about nice! Anytime we don't have to go to another government agency, we're happy campers. It would be nice if more places around the country did this.

They don't have the variety here, but every restaurant I've been to in East Europe has them. They are big with the Ukrainian and Polish in Canada that's for sure. Here they just make their own and don't bother with the pre-processed types...

I'm with you, Warlord. Pierogies are all over the place and already popular in our area of the US, so our American guests wouldn't think they are special. I was hoping for ideas that might bring a little more Canadian flair to the party.

What a lovely idea! There are some heritage Nova Scotia desserts you might want to try: Fungy and Grunt - even if it is only for their names .

Fungy is basically a deep dish blueberry pie. When the blueberries bubble while they cook, the moisture enters the pie dough which then gets little bubbles in it so that it looks spongy - and in the Maritimes bread that was full of holes from lots of yeast was said to be spongy from the fungus (yeast) or fungy. The word transferred to the baking of the deep dish blueberry pie so it became known as fungy.

Grunt, also known as slump, is a steamed pudding or dumpling made traditionally with blueberries or huckleberries. Nowadays all sorts of other fruits are used, especially rhubarb. It is kind of like a cobbler. The heritage recipe involves putting the berries in a pot, covering well with water and cooking them, then letting them cool, adding sugar, then dropping baking powder biscuit dough on top in glops and steaming the whole. The name comes from the sounds made during baking as the heated water from the cooking berries drives out pockets of air and it sort of 'grunts'.

A lot of people today confuse grunt and fungy and say they are the same, but they are not. The fungy is definitely a pie, and sometimes was even a layered pie with a pie shell on the bottom, blueberries, another layer of pie dough, then more blue berries on top. A grunt was definitely a base of berries with the baking powder biscuit or short bread dough plopped on top of the cooking berries and then steamed - or as is more common today, baked.

Regardless, they both 'sound' delicious in spite of their names.

My husband will be attending his oath ceremony on October 19th, and we will be having an open house to celebrate in early November. Although there isn't a huge difference between the two countries regarding food, I would like to include some more Canadian-type foods at the party. My step-daughters will be bringing some of the usual things - dill pickle chips, smarties, nanaimo bars, butter tarts, etc. - but I am looking for some things to cook as well.

My first thought was poutine, but I'm still considering ways to cook it and keep it fresh since this is an open house. I was thinking of making the fries and cheese in a casserole dish and putting the gravy on the side (with a sign that tells what to do with it because none of our American cohorts will know ), but I'm not sure how that will work. If you have any ideas, or can tell me exactly what kind of gravy to use, that would be great.

My husband spent roughly 20 years in Nova Scotia before living in Ontario for 30 years, so if you can think of anything more east coast, that would be terrific too. He's very little help. I'm going to make a lobster dip and maybe order some dulse (sp?) online.

Any ideas you have are GREATLY appreciated.

My husband completed his interview in Indy this morning with no problems. They took him 15 minutes early, and the interview itself only took 10-15 minutes tops. His questions were:

1. What do we call the first ten amendments to the Constitution?

2. What is the name of the President of the United States?

3. We elect a President for how many years?

4. Who is the Chief Justice of the United Sates now?

5. When was the Declaration of Independence adopted?

6. Name one of the two longest rivers in the United Sates.

It sounds like it might be a while for his oath ceremony, but no biggie. At least the hard work is all behind us.

Thanks, Kiwiana! My husband is more nervous than I've ever seen him in my life. Kinda cute, but don't tell him I said that. :whistle: We have a very simple case, so as long as he knows the answers to the civics questions, he'll be fine. He's making us leave four hours early (interview is two hours away) to make sure we're there in time. I guess the plan is to find some place for breakfast to kill the rest of the time. Nothing like being over-prepared. lol :blink:

Cwaf (January filer) and I (will file in June) just had this same conversation via messaging a few weeks ago. We are both Indy filers, but his wife's oath will be in Indy and my husband's will be in northern Indiana (Fort Wayne). The northern court district has a schedule posted online for three locations, but cwaf and I both looked for a central or southern schedule and couldn't find one. They do not offer same day oaths in Indy though.

My letter was from my local office as well (Indianapolis), but that was in December and I was a CSC filer, so I don't think that local offices sending out letters for VSC cases really means much.

My question - my husband's ex-wife is in Canada and he pays her a substantial amount of alimony. We have always deducted this as allowed on our US taxes, and in the area for the recipient's SSN, I have put in "Canadian" or left it blank. This year in TurboTax, it won't allow me to do this. I tried to sneak past it and thought that I was successful, but when I got to the filing step, it refused to send it. Does anyone have a suggestion for what I should put in that field? I could use her SIN because he does have it, but I wouldn't want the IRS to think it's truly a SSN. Any ideas? I've searched every help board and also have the question pending on the TurboTax Community, but I'm not getting any advice. Surely I'm not the first one to run into this new program feature.

Quick update, received text and email yesterday 12/14 that card production ordered. Thanks GOD!

Congrats C.A.! :dance: I noticed towards the end of the May filers that the approvals seemed to go in order (very close) of the biometrics date, so hopefully since you and I are out of the way now, the rest of June will roll. Sorry VSC folks. I'm referring to CSC. :wacko:

CSC filers, any updates? .

Nope, nothing new for us. Seeing as how some of the CSC filers are past the six month mark, and we're only a little over 50% approved, I think we're the month that is collecting dust on someone's desk. Maybe they've been on vacation a LOOOONG time.

Hang in there Inky. We're already past the six month mark and we filed at CSC, so that's a little strange. We're not sweating it though as we don't have any circumstances that would warrant it. I figure we'll hear from them eventually. We've gone to Canada three times with the NOA1 extension and had no problems, so that's all we really care about.

We sent our package in at the beginning of June. We had biometrics in early July and have been waiting since then. It's great how it's no biggie to wait at this point though. I watch people on the ROC forum who are sweating, and I don't get it. We're not separated from our loved ones like the first time around, and it's not like we can't travel, so all is good. If by chance an RFE shows up, you send in more info. Again, no biggie. Fortunately, we filed at the CSC (although I'll never understand why geographically speaking), so I'm guessing we'll hear from them in the next week or two. Sometimes they seem to be taking cases in order and other times they seriously jump around from month to month, so it's hard to say.

I have been fascinated with this topic ever since my husband and I first met years ago (I am the USC). There are millions of differences, but we have found that most of them are regional things. Just because I say a word a certain way in Indiana doesn't mean that another USC would say it that way in Florida. The same holds true with my husband who spent the first 20 years of his life in Nova Scotia, but the next 20 years in Ontario. He jokes that he can speak three languages now - all different varieties of English.

While I was poking around online last night, I found this language survey that appears to have been done by a group at Harvard. It's strictly a US survey, but I found it really interesting to see the areas of the country that pronounce words a certain way, use different words or phrases, etc. I also found several pronunciations that I would previously have deemed Canadian and found that they are heavily used in areas of the US outside of my area (particularly the East Coast). Pretty cool. If you're bored, take a look at it. You'll get a good chuckle out of a few of them.
