  1. Another article on this topic:

"The researchers studied interviews of more than 1,500 couples who were married or in a serious relationship. Five years later, they followed up 1,000 of the couples to see which had lasted. They found that if the wife was five or more years older than her husband, they were more than three times as likely to divorce than if they were the same age. If the age gap is reversed, and the man is older than the woman, the odds of marital bliss are higher."

The work is published in the European Journal of Operational Research.

  2. Geez, no! This isn't true. She can marry anyone she wants, anytime she wants to. Entering with a K1 visa doesn't make it illegal to marry someone else. It just means she won't be able to adjust status and get a green card. She won't be deported unless she overstays and ICE gets their hands on her (which is unlikely), and she won't get a ban of any kind unless she overstays by 180 days or more. She can marry her new boyfriend and leave the US before her I-94 expires, and she won't have broken any laws. Getting a spousal visa based on the marriage - that's another story...

Yes, this would be perfectly legal. The biggest problem she'll face is trying to prove the relationship is legitimate at the CR1 visa interview. If someone enters the US with a K1 visa, the petitioner subsequently dies, and the beneficiary marries someone else, all before the I-94 has expired, that would literally scream sham relationship to most consular officers. Most people would be emotionally wrecked after their fiance died, and wouldn't be ready for another relationship, much less marriage, for a long time. I'm sure this situation is going to smell like a boatload of rotten fish to the CO.

    Very good post!

Summary for the OP: It is legal to get married, and she could overstay by 180 days, but if she does so it might very well cause problems for her in the long run.

  3. Hey, guys. I have not been in here for awhile since Teaw is here in the US with me. But, at the moment she is in Buriram on her one month visit and I am heading over at the end of the week and we will return together near the end of March. But, what I wanted to know is if any of you that are either in Thailand or have rented cars over there know of some good car rental outfits that are reasonably priced. We are going to do some driving around this trip instead of hanging in the village and BKK all the time. I enjoy seeing her family but I can't sit around drinking coconut milk too many days or I get crazy to do something!!!! So Teaw suggested that I post in here to see if you have any leads on a good car rental there. Thanks!!

I rented a car there ONCE and I would never do it again. I almost killed a guy on a motorbike. I can either drive on the left (UK) OR deal with crazy drivers (Mexico) but not both at the same time (Thailand). If you are going to rent one, don't use some small outfit--call Avis or on of the other big names and use some Platinum Mastercard for the insurance. Or--go Thai and rent a motorbike. I wouldn't drive one in Bangkok, but I think it would be fine out in the country.

  4. My fiance is working for a company in the Philippines but sometimes her check is delayed for months. I run a small law firm and really need her help. I am thinking that my need for her help and her loss of income due to delayed pay may form a basis

    for a request to expidite.

    Any thoughts?

Zero percent chance is my only one... loss of income is not going to come close to clearing that hurdle.

  5. ....this is why I was always failing the probability chapter in math during highschool and college.... I still don't get it, I'm sorry :bonk:

I'm just saying, I don't think you two will be required to attend a personal interview when you file for adjustment of status (some do, some don't).

You two are about as far from the fraud demographic as it gets...

  6. Hi all,

wondering where do we pay for the visa fee. mine is dv lottery $819

    1. at the embassy on the interview date?

    2. at the post office ?

    thanks

I don't know where DV lottery winners pay, but congrats on winning!

  7. Ice was approved! POE is Friday!!

Congrats. Honestly, I never had any doubt about your case...

I'd lay 2:1 against you having a personal interview stateside when you file for AOS, too.

  8. He stole nothing.

It's a long story, but a perfect example of how Thai justice works.

Nutshell: He quit a job in which he was quite good at to start his own company. The owner of the company he quit was afraid of him getting her customers away because he was doing it better than her. She told him she would not let it happen and filed charges for theft that he stole her ideas.

The court filed 30 theft charges against him.

The former boss paid off the prosecutor & judge.

She, the former boss who started all this ####, is now dead.

26 years for stealing IDEAS? OMG. Normally, you would have to have a non-compete clause in an employment contract for this to be actionable at all, and EVEN THEN, it would be a civil case, not criminal.

How long did he actually serve?

  9. Happy Birthday to HRH the King.

My brother in law who is serving a 26 year sentence in a Thai prison, was notified that he is receiving a royal pardon and should be released by December 12th.

What a wonderful Christmas and New Years present for my family.

( and it took 2 years of chatting up the right folk, & money passing through several different hands..)

    Interesting... what were the charges?

  10. Send me a PM. There's buses that leave daily from soi 55 (Thonglor). 500 baht. Right on the corner.

Not certain that that would provide 100% proof that the passport would pass muster in Suvarnabhumi. An RTA General may have connections at the airport that could block the passport at one specific checkpoint.

  11. How can I know if he's flagged before I waste money on a plane ticket? I'm hoping his family isn't crazy enough to do that, but we both know that they would if they were really mad.

I don't know them, but I would have to guess that they would have told him if they were going to do that.

    Anyway:

    1. You could ask.

    2. If you don't want to ask, you could buy a cheap ticket to KL or Penang on Air Asia and see if he can stamp out.

  12. Interesting turn of events. Nok got a "job."

It's more like a home factory job. We go pick all these pieces up from a warehouse here in Dallas from some Lao/Thai folks to make a necklace. She gets the pieces to put together 1000 necklaces, packaging etc. She sits here at home and it takes her about a day and a half. She gets 8 cents for every one. On her first go around she made $80 USD. The price tag on each sticker is $9.99.

I'm not sure what to think about it. She spends alot of hours doing it, but seems happy to be making her own money. In Thai terms, she is making a months worth of salary in 4 days.

The whole thing seems sorta legit. At the factory there are all kinds of Thai, Lao, and Khmer people there. They have to work there onsite, but Nok gets to take it home. They give her two days to get it done and we bring it back completed. Then they give her a new set of boxes.

She had to show her green card and SS card and fill out a W-4. I was glad to see that they're at least doing it legally.

I'd say it's a sweat shop, but she does it from home.

Not sure what you guys think about this? Any thoughts?

Seems like she's hired as an independent contractor, though. Doesn't seem like a W-4 was needed. Anyway, that's around $6.50 an hour, so it seems a bit sweatshoppy, if that's what you mean.

  13. Living in a small village 2 hours from the big Mango I don't see any problems.

it actually IS a great place to retire. The trick is...stay the heck outta Bangers.

It's all in one's individual perspective, though.

I've visited many small villages and found them mind numbing.

I can't imagine living anywhere other than Bangkok--or maybe (big maybe) Chiang Mai.
