  1. Any one else announce this yet? mmmm :(

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – The world's most famous groundhog saw his shadow Monday morning, predicting that this already long winter will last for six more weeks.

Punxsutawney Phil emerged just after dawn in front of an estimated 13,000 witnesses, many dressed in black and gold to celebrate the Pittsburgh Steelers' Super Bowl victory the night before.

"There's significant buzz from the Steelers win and quite a few Terrible Towels floating from the crowd," said Mickey Rowley, deputy secretary for tourism in Pennsylvania.

The annual ritual takes place on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in Punxsutawney, a borough of about 6,100 residents some 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club announced the forecast in a short proclamation, in which Phil acknowledged the Steelers' 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

According to German superstition, if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2 — the Christian holiday of Candlemas — winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early.

Since 1887, Phil has seen his shadow 97 times, hasn't seen it 15 times, and there are no records for nine years, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In reality, Phil doesn't see much of anything. The result is actually decided in advance by 14 members of the club's Inner Circle, who don tuxedos and top hats for the event.

Rowley said the Groundhog Day festivities are Pennsylvania's largest tourist gathering in the winter. And if Phil's forecast proves correct, it should bring even more tourists to the state.

"It's six more weeks of skiing," Rowley said.

  2. IMHO the far reaching ramification of so many companies going under has been taken into account before deciding on these bailouts. I also feel the delayed passing of the bill and suggestion the bill wouldn't be passed helped escalate the worldwide market drop. We can look to the last 6-7 months to see the recent effects of a few companies collapsing and can only hypothesise how bad it could have become.

I admit there is always a point where you need to let go and let a company fail. Whilst you use the Redwood as an example there are other trees which when the top is cut off they thrive, others fail to thrive until a bush fire comes through and yet others where the tree bleeds which causes the two parts to meld.

I bet there are a lot of people out there working in these companies glad to still have a job. After all how many no longer have a job at all. The numbers escape me but I'm sure AJ will post something soon. :P

  3. It seems to me a lot of commentators in general and here seem to be focus' on $150k salaries. This is not what the rank and file are paid.

The key aspect to any business is its people. Compensation is a big motivator.

Bailing out a company means keeping it running, to keep it running it needs the people, if these people have been hired with the promise they will be compensated for performance, for this company to continue it needs to pay the bonus' these people were promised.

Having said that, obviously not everyone is performing and it is the CEO's, CFO's, COO's who should be held responsible and their bonus' are the ones who should not be paid. This also goes for the stock options.

  4. And yes, it's true. Where I work (in insurance) bonus eligibility starts at band 7 which has a low-end payscale in the mid 50s. Average bonuses are nothing like Wall Street, maxing out at about 25-30%, so there's definitely tons of 5-figure salaries in bonus eligibility range.

My experience too. And whilst the potential is for 25-30 because it is performance based many don't get the full wack. Also I have been at a couple of investment and insurance companies where a portion is linked to the performance of the company, so you can work your tail off but get screwed b/c of the companies performance.

  5. For future in-law lunches.

  6. All well small time bands like them usually don't last log any who after a few albums they disappear,

dude they were no small band..

They were a small band, and absolutely horrible. The scream at the start of that song still makes me cringe, but not as much as them being likened to a modern day AC/DC. NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Small band??? Only if you were under a rock.

  7. Congrats to both of you. Enjoy  being together.

wow, we slipped to page four!

are you getting excited/nervous about your interview yet?

Nervous, had a hassle cause I lost my police certificates, so I am waiting for them. As soon as I have them I'll feel better.

    Aw you've got time

yeah, at least you noticed it now and not later!

i just realised that the interview is friday 13th, i'm not superstitious though so i don't believe you're going to encounter any problems. ;)

i was worried about everything before the interview (i'm a total worry wart haha) but it was the easiest thing ever, hopefully it will be the same for you too.

I'm going to pretend I'm Chinese, it's a very lucky number for them.
