  1. It all depends on the end result you are looking for. If you are looking to shed fat, then diet (not actually diet but reducing your calorite intake appropriately) is the way to go. If you are looking to shape up certain areas to add muscle, then exercise is the way to go. Of course, I advocate the use of both, but it all depends on your goal and what you can realisticly put into it.

One thing people fail to realize, if you are trying to tone muscles...that won't do you any good until burn off the fat covering the muscles. Muscle simply wil not show through layers of fat. If you want to PM me with your specifics (height, weight, age, goals, etc.) I can give you a plan to help you get started.

I went down this route last summer when I started working with a personal trainer. Of course, I incorporated all three elements (cutting calories, cardio worouts and muscle workouts). But in this process, I have learned a lot about how the body responds and the steps to take to acheive different goals.

BUT I MUST SAY NEVER DIET! Diets do not work, they are only temporary and as soon as your body resumes normal eating habits, you will regain that weight and then some. For immediate fat loss, reducting calories by eating the right foods in moderation is the way to go, then once the fat is lost, then you increase your calorie intake (still eating the right foods) to "maintain" your desired weight.

  2. per the IRS:

    Q. I received my stimulus payment, but it was less than what my friends and neighbors received. Why?

    A. Your economic stimulus payment is based on information provided on your 2007 income tax return.

Many but not all taxpayers qualify for the maximum basic payment of $600 for singles or $1,200 for married couples. Many parents are also receiving an additional $300 for each qualifying child, born after Dec. 31, 1990.

Your payment may be less than the maximum for one or more of the following reasons:

You are single and your net income tax liability is less than $600. If you file Form 1040 net income tax liability is the amount shown on Line 57, plus the amount on Line 52.

You are married and your net income tax liability is less than $1,200.

You are single and your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than $75,000. On Form 1040, AGI is the amount on Line 37.

You are married filing a joint return and your AGI is more than $150,000.

You owe back taxes that reduced your payment.

You have non-tax federal debts such as unpaid student loans or child-support obligations that reduced your payment.

Around the time you receive your payment, you will also receive a notice from the IRS explaining how your payment was calculated. It is important to keep this notice as a record of your economic stimulus payment.

I would imagine this applies to emended returns:

    Q. I filed after April 15 and the payment date for my Social Security number has passed. How long will it take for me to get my stimulus payment?

    A. It will generally take a minimum of six weeks after you file your return to get your stimulus payment

and just found this on the IRS website:

    Q. If I currently have an ITIN and file my return but later this year get an SSN, can I amend my return to get the payment or will I need to wait until I file my 2008 return to claim it?

    A. You will need to wait until you file your 2008 income tax return to claim the economic stimulus payment. [New 4/14/08]

  3. off topic but do we residents get a stimulus cheque?

only if you have an SSN number and filed a tax return last year. Check the news section. There was an article about citizens with immigrant spouses not getting the check due to the immigrant spouse not having a SSN. This was an unintended loophole apparently. Part of the rule was that you had to have an SSN to get one in an attempt to keep illegal immigrants from getting the money, but legal immigrant spouses without SSNs got caught in that loophole, unfortunately.

  4. thanks everyone! Yes I did, that was the second time I had ever laid tile. Hard work, but such a great feeling of accomplishment doing it myself. I love doing renovation projects like this. Once we get married, I will be leaving my current job in legal and go into real estate flipping houses (woohoo!)

  5. Thanks! Here are pictures before I finished decorating everything. I will get those put up as well. The stone wall plaster is what took forever. Took three months (doing weekends only) to get the entire bathroom walls done! But it was worth it. Check out the before, then the afters. Oh, my house is only about 25 years old.

Later I will send pics with the italian decor in place. Also did my kitchen (except the counters), I did that room in a french country look. All is done now except the counters, which I won't do myself....

  6. I love decorating threads. I have been slowly redecorating our house. When I bought it a few years back, it was all done in pastels, even down the light blue carpet! Yuk! Most of the pictures are on my computer at work, but here is one that I uploaded previously. The bathroom walls were blue and pink pastel flowers. I replastered the wall to look like stone and then faux finished them. I will upload pics of the completed room. We also took out the old linoleum floors and put in ceramic tile.

  7. Hello TX Lady. I'm assuming you're from Texas. So am I. You will file at Vermont, where approvals are taking less time. I filed (K1 process) March 10 and just 2 months later have the approval and the papers are already to the embassy stage in London. We could probably be finished in 6 more weeks if we weren't needing to stall the interview until late July. I don't know how fast Denmark moves when it gets to the embassy stage.

Right now Vermont isn't really dealing with approving K3 petitions. You can look at the dates of NOA2 (which means the approval) in the lists on this page called Igor's list http://cse.ssl.berkeley.edu/igor/vjdata/vsc.aspx

The first list shows the last 20 approvals for K1s and the second list shows last 20 K3s. I'm not really familiar with K3 process, but I don't see approvals happening for months now.

Hope some of this information helps. I was lost when I first tried to sort through this website. People use so many abbreviations and I found the website very difficult to navigate when it was all new to me. "Look at the timelines, look at the guides..." and I honestly was clueless where to find or how to use those things.

Just wanted to give you a more specific recent Texas person's timeline. Also as far as travel during the process, we have decided it's fine, but my fiance only visits for 3 weeks at the longest. If your guy just goes through immigration line at the airport and says I'm here to visit friends, and doesn't go into the whole visa/marriage/fiancee story, he should be fine. If he comes too often and stays a long time, he could be denied if they got suspicious he was wanting to not go home and become an illegal.

Thanks everyone for the replies! Yes, Texas it is for me. So I guess that means I go through Vermont too....a good sign. Soon to be ex said yesterday he would sign the papers..but he keeps flipping on me so who knows. In our city, they have to sign the decree within 7 days after entry by the court, so waiting for the decree is not a big issue. If he signs the decree we can still of course go ahead and get married now..but that worries me. Should we bypass that and just go for the K-1? It is easy enough I think for us to prove there was no intent to marry when he came in on the VWP.

  8. I believe that a K3 takes a little longer than a K1. If the ability to work as soon as he gets here is important then the CR1 route might be better as work authorisation would be included but that route takes the longest.

My husband filed for a K1 for me and I was able to visit during the process on the VWP. I just made sure that i brought evidence of ties to my home country such as a rent agreement and work paysubs etc. I think you are only likely to have a problem with the visiting if the visits are too long but a couple of weeks here and there are unlikely to be a problem.

Thanks for the reply! Work is not an issue. He is self employed. His clients are in Europe, but he can do the work from anywhere...which is why visiting me vs. me visiting him is much easier. Is it pretty typical then that one can visit during the K-1 process? Since his job allows him to work from anywhere and he is self-employed, providing check stubs would be hard. When your spouse was visiting here on VWP, what did they do when he tried to come in and visit, i.e. what kind of questions did they ask?

  9. Ok, our story...I know a lot of people don't approve of getting married while on VWP....but this WAS NOT our intent when he came here on this visit. My divorce had not yet been filed when boyfriend arrived here for this visit. However, the day after he arrived my soon to be ex filed the papers (finally). Anyways, a week ago my boyfriend proposed!! We then visited with two different immigration attorneys to discuss options. Since it was not the intent to get married when he came for this visit, we initially decided to go ahead and get married as soon as my divorce is final (in June). We reached this decision for various reasons..one being I am 38 and he is 43...when you know what you want, why wait for years at our age (smile), second, I have two teenagers close to graduating high school and we wanted them to be able to spend some time together before they leave for college, getting to know each other better, plus being that I am raising two children and work full time, traveling frequently to Denmark is not an option right now. Well..bombshell dropped today and the soon to be ex backed out of marital agreement, which means the divorce will be dragged out for months....crying.

Anyways...so now, we have two options.....for me to go to Denmark when the divorce is final and get married there then file for K-3....or of course just file for the K-1.

Which one do yall recommend? During the pendency of both of these, am I correct in that he will not be able to come here to visit? I can't go there for very long as I would have to pay for me and my children to go to Denmark, plus I only get 2 weeks off a year so I could only conceivably go for one visit while we await the visa.

I really appreciate any advice yall can give based on your experiences.

I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, so I hope this is the right place. Sorry if it isn't.

  10. Hi, my first post. Great site. Anyways. My fiance is here on the VWP. We just got engaged last week. We are planning to go ahead and get married while here on the VWP (July) rather than wait. We of course will file the 130, AOS, EAD, etc....but what I want to know is can he apply for a SSN while waiting for the EAD? He needs an SSN to (1) be added to my bank account, (2) apply for a mortgage, and (3) get a driver's license.

If he doesn't have to wait for the EAD...what is the process?

Going to need EAD card or I-551 stamp or card to be assigned work authorized SSN.

Process? Applying for SSN or EAD card?

Thanks. We aren't looking to get a work authorized SSN...he is self employed and his work is internet based, so that isn't a concern. We simply need the SSN so that we can add him to my bank accounts, get a driver's license and buy a house. We want to sell my current house and buy one together, but can't get a mortgage without his SSN. Is it possible to get a non working SSN before getting the EAD?
