  1. Hi VJ folks,

I got my EAD card in the morning of Jan. 11, 09 and applied for SSN in the afternoon ( the same day). The lady from SSA who got my application gave me a ref. number to justify that I came in and applied for an SSN on that day... Two weeks after, I called the local SSA office where I applied my SSN and the lady I talked to said my application is still pending because they're still waiting for the verification from DHS and the SSN is only available for me once they got a reply from them..Now my questions are:

    1. What do you think , why DHS took so long to reply/verify SSA questions?

    2. Do you think it is a good idea for me to call DHS abut that matter?

Please help me...I am not really in rush but Im just wondering here why others can get their SSN in two weeks...

My husband and I are planning to file tax jointly hopefully the end of the month.

Thank you and Have a great day everyone.... MABUHAY!

Yep we have the same problem. We were told that the POE officer wrote her name wrong and so things do not match up.
  2. Hello all and Happy new year. My fiance came to USA on a K1 visa, we went to the social security office to apply for his social security card but the lady that helped us told us that we would need the employment autorization card before he could get a social security card so what i want to know is how long would it take for us to get theemployment autorization card back if we apply for it now because he needs a job ASAP. thanks for all your help in advance.
It took us exactly two months from mailing AOS got the green card today. No RFE or interview required. Good luck.
  3. hi everyone,

we got our biometrics appointment notice today and was wondering if anyone on the boards went to the Alexandria, VA ASC office for their fingerprinting requirements? do they allow early biometrics or are they stickler for maintaining your scheduled appointment?

    thanks.

We were there Dec 16 and went in 2 hours early and it was no problem...They were friendly and it went quick for us.

  4. Did you ever state on any immigration form you hadn't been arrested?

I stated I never been arrested, because I forgot all about this, when I searched and searched, I found this arrest record from 11 years ago, I completely forgot about this, I thought it was a ticket, I thought it was removed after 3 years...stupid me...

So I wrote the statement as such...

I do not think it is an issue. I had a marajuana arrest 30 years ago and put it down. It was never brought up. They are concerned with domestic violence and violent felonies. I would not worry about it.
  5. [quote name='philabride' date='Dec 16 2009, 09:53 PM' post='3570417 Thanks for the info. We had problems with the SS so decided to wait for EAD and get the SS card in the new name. Then go for the drivers license..

    Hi

You may have seen my other post about a battle to get a driver's license.

Now I have got my license, but it was a tough experience. I dont want anybody else to be stressed about DMV

during AOS so I will share my experience.

I tried to get my driver's license right after I got married. In PA, their website says that K-1 visa holders are eligible

for driver's license or ID, with expired I-94 and lack of evidence, I was turned down pretty quickly.

I returned with NOA1s, again, I was turned down because SAVE system (government system that they look up

your immigration status) was not updated. They told me to come back with EAD.

I returned again with EAD. I presented my passport, marriage certificate, my husband's birth certificate and proof of

residence, EAD, NOAs, SSN. I was issued a driver's license for one year.

A week later, I received a letter saying they will cancel my license because I commited a fraud to obtain the license.

The letter was scary, prosecution, judge...etc. Another letter indicated that they have a proof that I was not lawfully

staying here. How could it be? I was very upset, and my family advised me to go to a congressman's office.

They reviewed my evidence and called DMV, they told to return a call, and they never did.

I tried to call customer service. I was told that they had to run some research. A few days later, when I called

they told me that 'fraud' was that I presented a SSN card with my maiden name on it. I thought that they switched

thier story somehow..from immigration issue to just a SSN.

I changed my name on SSN and returned to DMV. I was invited to an office by a supervisor. He reviewed all my evidence,

made a few phone calls, and took my cancellation off. He explained that my cancellation was a mistake that

they made by believing unupdated SAVE system. I was angry with DMV but now I know that SAVE system

was the problem. They can only run things by what is on their computer screen.

    I advise you

to wait to apply for a license until you have SSN with your married name on,

and also EAD. If you can wait, just wait until you get a greencard.

If something like I experienced happens to you, try to contact

    USCIS to update SAVE record.

If we have rights to be here, we need to keep fighting for the rights.

  6. Hi there, well my wife's biometrics appointment is tomorrow afternoon. Is there anything that we should be taking with us besides the appointment letter & her passport? Should we bring a copy of anything else? Such as marriage certificate confirming her name(since her passport says maiden name but the appointment letter says married name)?

Anyways, just making sure I'm all set for it. don't want any surprised. Also just wondering. My wife's getting quite anxious to start working...after the biometrics is it likely that she will be getting her EAD quickly? Hope its not to much longer! Well, thank ya guys! God bless

I brought my passport, appointment letter, and marriage certificate.

I received my EAD within 2 weeks after.

Yep, got to have all that and the marriage certificate showing the new last name. Also, we were there two hours early today and there was no problem.

  8. Thanks for this information. I really do appreciate it. I knew I could get caught eventually and I would probably screw everything up. I’m confused now to why my lawyer told me I’d have to count everyone in my household then which would only be my mother and siblings. I don’t have any children, so does that mean I would only count myself and him??
Just because you live in a house with your mother and siblings does not mean you count them as someone you are required to support.
  9. Thoughts?
If a person is not able to meet the low threshold for support and has no additional sponsor support he/she should maybe wait awhile. There seems to me no shortage of legal and illegal immigrants around here who simply cannot make ends meet. Many seem to think it is okay to have many children who will certainly be raised in proverty. Their husbands might work hard to support their families but there are just not enough jobs to go around and without an education or the ablility to speak english it does not bode well. So the government has to support them and their children. It has every right to expect minimal ability for legal immigrants to pay their own way.
  10. With all due respect to the 'older members' who apparently own a public forum - I was retelling an experience for others to learn from, in fact I was trying to help some of the newer members. I wasn't asking for help, I was actually saying that through searching for information regarding the SSN on THIS WEBSITE, I managed to help myself! I'm glad some of you found it useful, as for the 'older members' if you haven't got anything nice to say, just say nothing at all. Obviously have nothing better to do.

My wife is the American citizen by the way, her name change was fine!

And as a newer member, you ARE helping me more than you know. And I am very grateful for the time you give up to post these snippets. Thank you!

The information in the old forums helped but every SS office is different. I went to two different ones in the Washington DC area and they told me two different things. I even ask to see their supervisors. The biggest problem was that the mispelled my wife's name at the airport entry. So, after 2 plus months we hit the wall of the two weeks no can do BS. So we wait for AOS and EAD and will get it then...

  11. Ian went to the SSA 2 weeks and 1 day after arriving, and they had not interfaced with DHS, but took his application. Two weeks later, called and checked status. Still nothing from DHS. Is this normal?

No If his status did not verify with the initial verification request, the SSA office is supposed to submit a secondary electronic verification request and that normally comes back within a week. If the response is that they need to see the immigration document (I'm assuming in his case it's a Form I-94), a photocopy of the front and back of the document is mailed along with Form G-845 to the immigration verification office. Figure a month for that to come back to the SSA office. If they haven't received it back within a month the SSA office has a phone number they can call.

I would think that at least the secondary electronic request should have been submitted and a response received after two weeks. So not sure if the SSA office's response of "nothing" means they have only done the initial request or submitted multiple initial requests that haven't verified and have not submitted a secondary request or the secondary request didn't verify and they had to send the Form G-845. Need to go into the office and find out where things stand and if needed, make sure they move on to the next step.

Thanks for the info. At our initial visit, they did take photocopies of Ian's travel documents. We called yesterday and said, "We do have you in our system [as applying for a SSN], but haven't received your information via our interface with DHS yet. This may take up to 6 weeks."

I'm not sure other people have had to wait this long for a SSN, but maybe it's normal. The only thing it's holding us back from is adding him onto a checking account. Our bank requires a SSN to add him on.

We ran into the same problem. They kept putting us off until the dreaded two weeks from I-94 expiration and was told to wait for EAD approval. Idiots...

  12. Hey guys, me and my fiance are so excited to be starting this process!!! We just got our NOA1 last weekend and I know I have time but I would like to start preparing for the rest of our journey. I m starting to be a little worried about the I-134. I am a waiter and most of my money is made in tips but I have been making an average each month that puts me around $21,000 a year. I know its over the minimum, but my tips are under the table and I plan on reporting them anyway at tax time. I also have no one I can think of who would sponsor us. I guess my question is will they be less likely to think I can support her because of the nature of my job and working off of tips? Also, I started my job in August, so can the length I have had my job be a problem? Im suppose to be moving up in position to a manager soon so hopefully that will happen before I even have to send the I134 in. Thanks for any advice you can give me!

    ~Mike

Having been self-employed and semi-retired I had no W-2's or 1099's to show but did pay more taxes than I owed the last 3 years. Just to be safe. As turns out I did not need to. I just could not use all the deductions. It helped to have some savings to show.
