  1. No, sorry - the only consulates that handle K-1 Visas are Montreal and Vancouver - Montreal is anyone Ontario and east and everyone west is Vancouver. The other consulates only handle certain things. Believe me, I lived in NB and had family in Halifax...I would have loved to go there instead of driving to Montreal in January.

I hope things work out for you :)

  2. My HR person put "K" for other and then wrote "Relocating for Spouse" in the notes section. I actually didn't ask them to do that, she just did on her own so that was nice.

I should have my EAD card soon to send it in. They finally sent me a letter saying that I'm denied until I send them an EAD card. Took them long enough!!

It's ridiculous how long they wait to tell you eh? I was slightly miffed after waiting 3 months and filling out cards for nothing lol

  3. I don't think so because it is a completely different department you go through for Inter-state claims. It is a smaller office, I think there are only two or three ladies that work there to be honest. And it doesnt have access to all the EI things such as online or telephone reporting.

You have to be in Canada to receive regular benefits and you have to notify EI if you move. I suppose people could try and not tell them they moved, but when the government finds out, they would ask for that money back :(

hmm, actually re-reading what you wrote Danu, as long as you call them and tell them when you move, they most likely will just put your claim on hold until you get your EAD. You shouldnt have to reapply - just get them to move your case to Inter-state claims. I would call and talk to someone about the process when you're close to moving.

  4. Quick question...

I'm totally hating my job right now and we are waiting for our K1 visa at the moment (probably another couple months) I want to quit so I can go to the US for a month or so and spend some time with family back in canada before our paper work come through. Is there any chance I can qualify for EI?

    I don't think so.

Number one, they do not look favorably on quitting a job, unless you can give them a reason (ie moving to the US to be with spouse), and your employer usually has to note this somewhere on your ROE. Quitting before you get your visa would be considered too soon by the EI people as mentioned in the other thread.

Then there is the point of being "willing, able and actively looking for work", which you would not be. You would be outside the country, so you would not be considered looking for work, and you are not authorized to work in the US.

Unfortunately you would not meet the requirements. Even after you move, you still have to submit proof that you are authorized to work, and that doesn't happen until you get your EAD (about 2-3 months after you submit your AOS). I applied for EI the day after I moved to the US, which was Feb 4th - I started to receive my EI payments last week.

  5. One of my best friends just called crying again, andI hate how I can only tell my friend so much and not get thru to her. My friend and her daughter live in NB in an appartment above her parents. Now her parents have pretty much controled her entire life, they ruined her marriage to a great guy (they didn't like him), and till this day they pretty much still control her. They wanted to move from Sault Ste Marie to NB (her parents). They convinced her to move with her daughter.

She also gave up custody of her son at 2yrs cause her parents convinced her she could'nt handle him. He's with his dad. She hasn't seen him i think in like 6 yrs.

Her mother is an drunk and her dad well he should be in jail, I wont get into that.

I've been telling her for years to grow up and take charge of her own life. . Her daughter and her are both on attidepresents and getting worse. She is slow and has been treated like a retard by her parents for ever. They run her life she is not that dum, she can do things on her own, she wants to get away and move back to the Sault where she has friends and is able to do things on her own.

Her parents moved to and area that she is totaly dependant on them. She doesn't drive and has lots of health issues. It drives me nuts I can't help her, Ive told her to pack up and get on a bus and just go, but she doesnt want to leave all her stuff or pets. She has a friend she can stay with till she gets disability transfered for an appartment, but she can't get any help from disability in NB. They don't have any type of moving allowence from what she has been told.

So anyways I figured I would vent in here and also see if anyone has any ideals how she can get moved with little money any type of help I can find her would help. I was thinking a womens shelter if things got worse, but I don't know if they would help her move that far. I know she probably would never move but I have to keep trying to give her options and just maybe when her lease is up this time she will go. All I can do is be there when she is ready to go and hope it will be soon.

    Danielle

    Hi Danielle,

I used to work in a Women's Shelter in New Brunswick and I would highly recommend you telling your friend to call and talk to someone. I know that each shelter does have it's own set of criteria to allow admittance, but they would be able to tell her. It sounds like it is emotional abuse from her parents and I know that that would have satisified criteria at the shelter that I worked at. We would aid women in relocating and setting them up with basic items such as dishes, clothes, bedding and toiletries. If nothing else, the workers would be able to give her other ideas, she would have someone to talk her problems through and she could go to the house for a visit and speak to the workers in person. Some of the houses also have outreach programs, so she may be able to have someone come to her and talk to her, maybe make a plan of action.

I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions :)

  6. Congratulations! I'm glad your POE was simple - I had officers that cracked jokes too...made me feel so much more at ease :)

And congrats on the wedding! AOS isn't too hard, and you have VisaJourney for anything you have questions about.

If you're ever gonna be in Raleigh, drop me a line! I'd love to hang out with a fellow Canuck!

  7. Did BRD last night on my priest (thank god I wasn't asked to heal it). First time running that instance where It wasn't by a lvl 80. I have to say that it was really fun, especially that room before the last two boss. I almost got kicked from the group though

The leader was a mage, and after every big pull, he would post recount DPS info into chat. I have no AoE skills really (Holy Nova doesn't count), but I know my single target DPS was far beyond theirs. So for the final 5 boss', I would ask him to post the Boss DPS. The first time, he tried to post the overall and I was quick to correct him. I was doing 490 DPS on the boss, but only about 300 overall. He of course was doing about 190 on the boss, but 340 overall. So after the third to last boss, after I asked to see it, he says "yeah yeah yeah, you are much better than we all are on boss', but overall, i'm doing the most DPS. Raids need all sorts of DPS and each is as important as the other". I really almost fell out of my chair laughing at that one. I couldn't resist. I replied "Really? Thats how it works in Naxx/EoE/Ulduar in your guild?". He was silent after that. I'm really loving my shadow priest. I'm regretting spending the 1k gold to dual spec him as I don't plan on healing. I really can't wait til I get mind sear and shadow word death. Although, i'm told that shadow word death takes a lot of getting used to.

Haha, I duel spec'd my Spriest last week before a BRD so I could heal it...We actually did fairly well, though I'm used to healing on my druid lately. I also had a mage leader who posted DPS all the time :S He also wouldnt watch his aggro AT ALL, so he pulled off our tank often...it is much harder to keep a mage up than a warrior :( I let him die twice though, and I think he got the hint after that. Priests are great healers, but holy ####### they're hard on mana compared to druids! I think I looked for my 'innervate' 20 times :P

I love SPriest though :D I had one on my old account, along with my first raiding hunter (account was in Ex's name, so I had to start from scratch with release of Wrath).

But I never got my priest beyond 68, so I didnt have all the cool skills, but I did have SW:Death...which is totally fun, but a pain if you misjudge how low their health is...stupid thing can hurt lol :)

  8. They stopped sending me cards when they told me i had to stop to wait for the EAD i called and askedif i should be getting them and they said no kinda seems like they don't wanna back pay me and just continue the weeks when i start again .. I asked that Donna on 2 different occasions how they handle that and got 2 different answers .. i should have my EAD very soon so will find out then

Hmm, I know they aren't going to back pay me - even though I filled out the cards for 2 months, I wasn't able to work, so I know I will not be getting money from that period...

Now I just have to wait until to tomorrow to make sure the direct deposit goes alright :)

  9. So I was going to sign up for an account here today, but I was wondering something. I will want to transfer money from my Canadian account down to my US one (from EI) - so when I sign up, should I still say I'm in the US? because I don't need to transfer money back to Canada?

Or am I able to transfer money both ways between the accounts? (does my question make sense lol?)

  10. If they pay you from the date of the EAD, I wonder why they send us cards in the mail before we get our EAD.

So strange. I got another card again yesterday.

I'm afraid I got cards for the first 2 and a half months I was in the US after I initially filed and they meant nothing in my case...they told me after 3 months I wasn't eligible until my EAD came in, they put my claim on hold, and they reopened it when I got my EAD. :S They're kinda backward...but you could always call Donna and ask her why you're getting them :)

In case you don't have the Inter-State Claims number : 1-877-486-1650

  11. Well got my EAD on Monday, faxed it that night, forgot to send my marriage cert (lol they must have thought some random person was sending them #######) and EI called today to tell me I will start getting my money for the week of the 28th.

They did the "two week waiting period" by the date on the card, which was the 13th of June (not the day they received it), and I'm elegible for 32 weeks. She reminded me to keep track of places I apply to, to prove I am activly looking for a job. As well, if I decide to do volunteer work, to keep looking for jobs (dur :P ) and let them know.

so after 5 months and being slightly cranky about it, I will finally have some money..

though it looks like I may be able to get hired at Best buy soon lol...

Hey Jenni - Did they pay you starting from the day you got your EAD? Or from the first card they sent you?

If they pay you from the day you get your EAD I wonder why they send us cards beforehand...unless they back pay us which would be pretty sweet....

I have my biometrics in 3 weeks, so I'm sure my EAD will come soon after that... here's to hoping anyways!

So I called and talked to Donna today just to clear some things up. They started my claim from the date on my EAD, which was the 13th of June - but there is a mandatory 2 week waiting period. So the first report card I got and sent back two weeks ago was for those two weeks (which you don't get paid for) and then I got my next one today and she did it over the phone with me (though she can't do this usually, you have to mail back the card). So I will get my first payment wednesday and it will continue from there. So you get paid starting from the 2nd card you send back :)

She was so nice and she said that it sucks we can't do online or phone reporting like the residents of canada, but usually there is only one person in the Inter-state claim office so if she did phone reports, she'd never get off the phone. She did say that if for some reason I got 4 weeks behind in reports/payments, that I was more than welcome to call her and get things caught up.

Congrats on your biometrics appointment :) It's super fast, and I had my card 2 weeks after mine! I actually got my GreenCard interview date last week - August 7th - which is WAY faster than I expected :) Can't complain though...

Now to find a job in a shitty economy *sigh* :P

  12. Great thread!

Our song is In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel.

It's a song I've loved for years...and it just fit so well.

It was the first song we ever danced to.....alone in his bedroom.

We danced to it on our wedding night.

It has such a special meaning to us.

Nick and I are celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary in August and we are getting our wedding bands engraved with "It's in your eyes 8.2.08"

    <3

I LOVE that song Laura - it was one of the others we danced to at our wedding...

A year already :) Early congrats and the engraving is so cute <3

  13. Our song is "No One" by Alisha Keys :) Suited our situation perfectly. Everytime we hear it he nudges me and kisses me, or we still grab hands or something <3

And my 'get-through-the-months-of-waiting' song was "One Step at a Time" by Jorden Sparks...seemed fitting a lot of the time

  14. In my opinion, I'd shop around and see if you can find a civil who will mark it "not suitable" because you are nursing.

We were very slow with the vaccination record to the point where we went to a CS the week before the interview to get the HPV shot only to find they were out. So we went to the interview and even after it expected an RFE for the record with the HPV shot on it. We were approved without it.

Btw all the older woman on here are very lucky that the drug lobby didn't win the 30's age recommendation a few months back.

Unfortunatly in Canada, we cannot 'shop around' for our Civil surgeons - there are 3 in the whole country, and it is a Canadian requirement that people under 26 get Gardisil - all the doctors are all going to say the same thing :S

  15. Wow! I'm still sitting on my butt and haven't gone... but this week! Sometime this week!

I am testing the system, wait time theory... I should definitely be in the system by now!

You would think eh? I went just under a month after I arrived here - nope, not in the system..but it only took 7 days for them to clear me and get my card

  16. Aw July, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I know what it's like to have sick animals (both cats and dogs). I hope that you can figure out what it is!

I'm glad other things are going well, though busy :) and I hope the wedding planning goes perfectly <3

  17. I got report cards for 2 months and didn't get the letter saying that I wouldnt get my EI until the end of my 3rd month...so don't go by that :S

And I saw the post too about technically being able to work...but I wasn't going to fight with them over it. It is the SSA that says that and DHS and USCIS trump them on the federal level when it comes to immigration.

As well, when I spoke to a lady from EI and mentioned it, she was pretty cranky and told me flat out "No, you can't" and all the people that did get EI before the EAD "were wrong"...I think she was having a bad day.

If you can get it, more power to you chick :)

  18. Hey Poprocks!

LOL hubby was reading over my shoulder and was like "there is an Ulta right down the complex from work" - so now I must go :P

I don't know much about nails, I've had them done once..I do my own usually. I can feel your pain about the hairdresser, though I went a couple months ago for a trim and found a really nice woman about my age at JC Penny that did a great job - her husband is an immigrant too, so we had a huge chat about how annoying the whole thing was. I need to get it colored this time and I'm nervous, my good friend was my hair dresser in Canada for 4 years, and she was awesome...she also only charged me the cost of Dye *sigh* I haven't paid full price since University lol.

On the friends side of thing, I feel like I was pretty lucky. Hubby is a district tech and trainer for Best buy, and he knows a lot of people at the store closest to us. He introduced me to people on each of my visits down. When I moved here, we actually changed apartment complexes 2 weeks after my arrival and now two of the women that I met and got along with are about a 1 min walk away. We've clicked pretty well, and though it's not at the level of my friends at home, it feels nice to know I have people to talk to. There is a group of 4 of us that do girls nights, dinners and stuff, and then we all bring our husbands/boyfriends (and a few other couples) and have game night once a week and big BBQs once a month or so. I've gotten to know them quite well because of these things.

I have a few friends that I feel I'm drifting apart from as well...which sucks and I try to keep in touch, but it doesnt seem like something they want to keep up with :( It's hard to come to the realization that someone doesn't think you're as important anymore...*sigh* but my best friends are still there...we talk every few weeks...I miss them and I wish I could have them around more often...

I'm sure you will do great though :) you seem to have an outgoing personality and though you may not find a kindred spirit for awhile (no one has come close to being where my best friends are yet), some ladies you can let your hair down around is great in the meantime :)

  19. Well got my EAD on Monday, faxed it that night, forgot to send my marriage cert (lol they must have thought some random person was sending them #######) and EI called today to tell me I will start getting my money for the week of the 28th.

They did the "two week waiting period" by the date on the card, which was the 13th of June (not the day they received it), and I'm elegible for 32 weeks. so after 5 months and being slightly cranky about it, I will finally have some money..

though it looks like I may be able to get hired at Best buy soon lol...

  20. This is probably a stupid question, but your I-94 number... is that the "departure number"? There is no other number on here...

I think that's what I used. I figured I was giving them the copy of it so if it was wrong, they could find it for themselves, haha. Hope that doesn't backfire on me!

I just send my AOS today. Took me a good week to put it all together and check it over a few times before sending. Hopefully I didn't miss anything. I hope it processes fast, although with summer vacation starting I'm not holding my breath! I just want to be able to work by October and go home for Thanksgiving.... here's hoping!!

Sapphire - If you just sent it, you will have the AP and EAD by August I bet. They are SUPER speedy on these! I was just issued my EAD so Im waiting for it in the mail, and the AP I got on Friday. So, I would be amazed if it took longer than September to have everything. :) The trick is, as soon as you get your biometrics appt letter, go get them done. You don't have to wait for the actual appt date and I think that is what sped me up.

Even if you do wait for the date, it doesn't hold it up too much but you could speed it up a couple days :) I had to just because of hubby's work schedule, but my AOS was received May 1st, biometrics June 2nd, I recieved my AP on the 20th and my EAD yesterday :) they are going quickly, I am sure you will be able to work by the end of the summer :)
