I think I recall my ex putting "NRA" (stands for non-resident alien) where my non-existent-at-the-time SSN would have gone. And yes it had to be mailed in. When I arrived and got my SSN, we amended the return to Married Filing Jointly.

I filed MFS in 2015 and 2016. As I said, this isn't an immigration issue. Good luck on your journey.
