  1. Hopefully someone can answer this one... So we need to declare our dividends from Canadian RRSP, which is fine. My statements does not specify any particular type of dividend. On the form 8891 we are prompted to insert "ordinary" and "qualified" dividends. So, which kind of dividend would I have on my RRSP if it simply states "total dividends"?

    Thanks!!!

  2. I wouldn't worry. Lot's of people have waited more than 2 weeks. And most important DO NOT reply on your online case updates. I've received my interview letter about 1 month ago and there is still no updates on the website. If your interview finished on a positive note, I doubt there is any reason to worry. Try not to think about it, a watched kettle never boils... and when you least expect it your mail box will give you what you want most!

    Congratulations on a positive interview!

  3. WOW! Have any of you read the definitions of "beneficiary" vs "annuitant"? Are we all speaking the same language here? Confusing!

I was told that if you chose to keep your RRSPs in Canada and become a resident of the US you will have to include it in your income return every year wether you made a contribution to it or not, wether you made a withdrawal from it or not. As far as 08 goes, there was definitely no increase of funds, like most people I saw my savings dwindle last year. So at least I have no gains to report. But I've had numerous accountants tell me: "Oh you have to make special declarations and they are verrryyyy complicated, but I won't tell you how to do them so I can charge you $750 to do it for you!"

OK, I'll download the 8891, study it with my dictionary, and try the Sebrinski forum. Thanks for the insights! Any other hints are truly appreciated!

Oh, and did you guys know you have to declare every account you own in Canada (or other countries) by June? All this is so complicated!

  4. It's the most wonderful time of the year!!! Last year I filed in the US for the 1st time. I hired H&R Block, payed $250 to later throw everything out and do it myself. They had NO understanding of the Canadian system, this Sr Accountant I had did not even know what a RRSP was... Now I am starting to work on this year's filing, and I am still so confused!

How do I declare my Canadian RRSP? If I did not make any deposits in my account in 08 I do not receive any documents from my financial institution, yet I know I have to declare stuff every year. I have searched high and low for information, purchased a book called "A Canadian in America" which has multiple chapters on RRSPs and taxes yet they do not explain how to do this. Does anybody here have any inside knowledge on this? I don't mind paying for these services, as long as they are services I will use and not throw away (Thanks H&R).

I have no idea how to obtain information on gains or losses, and getting information from my institution at this time of the year is near impossible...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  5. Hey there, I am in the same boat, found out today my EAD was approved. Vvvveeeerrrrrryyyyy happy since it's been over 135 days. But I was wondering, why do we have to wait to have the card on-hand to start working if it's approved and everything?

CONGRATULATIONS TO U TOO. Because employers need physical proof that we are legal to work in US.

Thanks for your reply... so they need physical proof for their knowledge? Or if they trust I am honest is that not good enough? I know, I am very naive... Oh, and good luck on your upcoming interview jettyglenn...

  6. The rule is to never assume anything. Some things fly some things crash. Some are lucky some are unlucky. I lost my TN status because I was married to a US citizen and waited for my last trip to Canada before filing any documents. After getting married I had to go back to Canada twice. The 1st time I crossed no questions asked. The second crossing was one of the scariest event of my life! If you plan on getting married with a TN, file asap, stay in the country until your advance parole comes in. And just because you hold a TN status your re-entry is never guaranteed. This is irrelevant of marriage plans, but if you plan on traveling with your boyfriend, they will ask questions.

Good luck, and just be careful!

  7. Hi everybody! I just discovered there is a canuck forum here on VisaJourney... I just got my interview letter too (for AOS) on May 7. Good luck to all of you, lot's of shared stories on the interviews are very positive! (Under the reviews link)

    Cheers!

  8. Hey there! I am pretty much in the same stage you are in, prepping everything for the upcoming interview. But from what I've heard, pictures are very important. Bring lot's of them showing the 2 of you together. Trips, family occasions, holidays, etc. In my case, we do not have joint bank accounts or any bills with both our names, but we do have the health insurance and the lease. I went a little overboard in the affidavit department, I think I have over 20 of them from friends my husband has known for years. But in any case, gather lot's of pictures and photo albums. I have a feeling the rest is pretty subjective and differs from one situation to the next.

    Good luck!

  9. I don't know if it can make you feel better but i filed in July and just got my interview for April....

I don't think your case is THAT slow.

Ooooffff! OK, guys thanks! Thanks a million. Once again, just being over dramatic I guess. It's good to hear from all of you reminding me of the positive here. And yes, I do see the positive and am aware of it. And also following on the advice, gathering all my stuff for the interview and supporting documents and everything.

I'll just stay focused on the good, and offer support where it is needed.

    Cheers!

  10. I must admit, my case is unnaturally slow. So slow, I had to stop coming here because it was depressing me too much to compare dates with others. I received my NOA in november, my biometrics was at the end of January, and my interview date is set for May! I haven't received anything yet for the EAD.

This delay is overwhelming, and frightening. People tell me to simply wait and not stress out over it. But it's easier said than done. Every morning I wake up thinking about the mail, and hoping "today will be the day" something positive will come in. Are others out here experiencing the same long delays as I am?

  11. We received our interview appointment letter today and the wording worries me.

It says Request for Applicant to Appear for Initial Interview.

Is this standard? If the request is for an initial interview does that mean there will be a second interview at a later date?

We filed for AOS in December and we did not yet receive our EAD or Advance Parole documents yet. Is it unusual to

be interviewed before EAD and AP are received?

I filed for AOS in November, did not get my interview letter yet. I don't think anything is either normal or abnormal with USCIS processing times! I am starting to feel they are overwhelmed with applications and are probably doing the best they can (or so I hope). As for timelines and stuff, it really depends on where your application was sent and which office is processing your application. They all have various timelines.

  12. I'd say something is weird... my AOS came in dated Nov. 14, my biometrics was on Jan. 26 (which seems like a pretty long waiting time) and then on the very same day of my biometrics I received a letter in the mail saying they attempted to mail my permanent resident card but since it been lost in the mail I had to file for a replacement. Strange, how could they send me a green card before the biometrics and interview?

  13. I've entered the US on a TN visa. Now my boyfriend (who is a US citizen) and I would like to get married.

    1. If we do get married, can I change my status to obtain a Green Card?
    2. Will I have to leave the country before my TN expires and risk being denied re-entry?
    3. Do I risk losing my TN status and also losing the right to work in the US?
    4. Can I simply remain in the US, file all necessary documentation and wait for decision?

Does anybody on this forum have experience with this situation?

    Thanks!
