  1. I am currently a permanent resident of the US and my husband is a US citizen. My parents are considering coming to the US to live, work, and eventually retire. I'm working on getting my citizenship so that I can bring them down here in the near future.

My parents are concerned about whether they will still be able to get their old age pension from Canada and any other benefits they would typically be entitled to in Canada as they get older, if they were to become permanent residents of the US. (my Dad is 58 years old)

I'm wondering if anyone in the visa journey has come across this or could point me towards some answers?

    Thanks!

  2. Hey all!

Guess what?! I got a letter in the mail yesterday (Saturday) about my interview appointment. Woot! I was beginning to think they had forgotten about me. So we'll be interviewed in Spokane (since I live in Moscow, ID 1.5 hours away) on January 2009 at 11:15 AM.

Now I have to gather all that paperwork and evidence ####### again, I was enjoying life without it, but thankfully this will be the last for a while... if all goes well. Yay!

Good lucks to everyone still waiting!

  3. So if I just can't come up with my monthly payments, does that mean I am screwed? There's got to be something. I'm hoping to get some information tomorrow when I call them. grrr.

I wish I would win the lottery.

    Thanks for your reply.

  4. Hi Canadians,

I have some Canadian student loans to pay back and I can't afford it at this time. Since I live in the US now, I'm not eligible for the Interest Relief Program. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm going back to school once I get my greencard, going to transfer to school in the US, but that may be a few months, and in the mean time the Canadian government is breathing down my neck about paying back my loans. Ahhh!

    Any advice is really appreciated!

    Thanks

  5. Hey,

I was wondering if anyone else is in the same position as me... I checked the case status online for my AOS application and the status date has not changed since we sent it in, it's still saying August. If I click on it, it says it's at the National Benefits Center. I haven't gotten any emails from them or anything. Just hoping all is OK with it. Being impatient I guess.

    Any ideas?

YEs. you're not alone. With my AOS it still says JULY 21 that they received it and its at NBC. Last update on it was on JULY 30

Hmm, sucky. I guess I just have to be patient. grr.

    Good luck!

  7. To add: I've actually done six-hour drives with ice-packs, or frozen bottles (591 mL, 20 oz) (and some frozen homecooked items) in a thermocol-box cooler (grossly inferior to the Coleman). Total amount that had thawed--about 0.75 oz/20 mL.

"thermocol"--British English term for Americanese/Canuck "styrofoam"

Yeah, well if it was me bringing the perogies across the border, I would just pack them in ice in a cooler... but my grandma slaved away making them and is paranoid that they will thaw out and her hard work will go to waste. So my parents and I are trying to compromise and suggest dry ice as an option...

    Silly grandma.

    Thanks for the ideas everyone!

  8. Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to this question... My parents are coming to visit me from Canada and would like to bring some homemade perogies and cheesebuns (no meat). If they pack them in dry ice to bring them across the border (they are driving across) will the dry ice cause any problems with the border officials? I've never done it before, so thought I'd ask. Any idea?

    Thanks!

  9. Not seeing that one on the new required list: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...00045f3d6a1RCRD

For most the old requirements were: MMR, Varacela (Chicken Pox), Tetanus and diphtheria toxoids.

CS's are now also required to do a TB skin test.

The new requirements include the human papillomavirus vaccine (Gardasil). http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...00045f3d6a1RCRD

  10. A little known fact is that if Miss Jane Doe marries Mr. John Smith and KEEPS her name, she is still "Mrs. John Smith". The MRS part means "wife of John Smith".

So, she could be known as:

    • Jane Doe (her NAME)
    • Ms. Jane Doe (generic TITLE followed by her NAME)
    • Mrs. John Smith or Mrs. Smith (her TITLE)
"Mrs. Jane Doe" or "Mrs. Jane Smith" or "Mrs. Doe" are all incorrect ... it implies she is the wife of ... herself!

Though you do see it quite common for people to refer to themselves as "Mrs. Jane Smith" when they change their last names.

    Wikipedia has more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs.#Usage
