  1. We just got email from NVC stage that we can start paying the fees and start the process. My question is do these need to be paid asap or can we wait 1-2 months? When does it become “inactive”?
  2. Following this thread as well. Is this a Montreal consulate thing or does this happen in other countries as well?
  3. Any new updates here? Our I-130 recently got approved and we're on the NVC stage. I'd like to stay in Canada as long as I can (I am about to accept a remote US-based job) and will be using my parents address for domicile.
  4. "Resident CRA doesn't speak to non-resident CRA and things get confusing, fast." can you clarify this part a bit? We actually are thinking of renting our place long term out instead of selling. I know it would be super annoying if we decided to sell after moving to the US, but just trying to think if our kids ever wanted to move back to Canada when they were older. Will definitely talk to a cross border accountant soon too.
  5. CalCowBoy said that they were issued their visa last week, so the domicile issue wasn't an issue at all! Congratulations @CalCowBoy, thank you for the update!
  6. @CalCowBoy congratulations!! Yes please do update when you get a chance and give details
  7. The good news through the Canada forum is that apparently the backlog is being quickly cleared and most people get an interview date ~2 months from DQ!
  8. If it wasn't for this website and asking questions, I would have been confused as well. We also filed using the online form and I agree that it isn't very clear that this question is only applicable if you are currently IN the US while applying.
  9. He was born in Libya (never had citizenship there because FIL was just working there as an engineer) and went with his parents to Bangladesh (their actual country) at 5 years old and then at age 9 immigrated and naturalized as a citizen in Canada 30 years ago.
  10. Hi all, I was reading the Canada forum and read stories that if you are a male and are from a MENA country (even if you are a Canadian citizen), the consulate will do Additional Processing (form DS-5535) which can take 6 months+ after the interview. I am a worrier by nature and wondering if anyone has skipped this process or is it inevitable? My husband has been a Canadian citizen for decades but was born overseas and came here as a child. The kids and I were planning to move to the US before his interview and I was okay waiting a few weeks but honestly feel defeated that this could be a possibility. I'm considering staying in Canada together till he gets his visa and do everything I can to successfully make an intent to re-establish domicile and hope Montreal accepts that (notarized and official for lease at my parents house, I already opened a bank account last year, go after I-130 gets approved and get drivers license, voting record, etc and look for a US-based remote IT job (my field) .
  11. Thank you for the replies. Hoping we won’t get AP, but need to plan everything. May husband has a Nexus, does that usually help with avoiding AP or not applicable?
  12. Hmm okay more reason to not sell until visa is in hand. How long is the medical valid for? Do you typically schedule it right before the interview?
  13. Hi all, Typically, how do people time selling your primary residence? Do you wait until visa is in your hand or do you start when you get your Montreal interview day? A few posts about long APs have made me nervous (though he's a citizen, my husbands parents are from a MENA country). I also read that this also depends on your medical? Excuse my ignorance but could someone tell me what a loose timeline for this type of thing works? Also can you get your visa, enter at a POE, and then come back to list your property for sale in Canada? Or does that trigger a tax event since now you are an LPR?
  14. HI all, mods please move to the Canada boards if its more appropriate but I figure my situation might be the same for other countries as well. I am USC married to a Canadian citizen for past 10+ yrs and continuing to live in Canada while we file I-130. I've been a stay at home parent for the past several years but my background is in software engineering. I'm applying for jobs now and see things have changed so much in terms of remote work. I was wondering if I could work remotely for a US company, file US taxes there and how that might strengthen my intent to re-establish domicile? Would I put my parents address (where my banking mail and cc statements still go) or my Canadian address? Has anyone done this or is doing this and how does it work tax wise? I will talk to a cross border tax pro soon but just wanted to see if anyone has been in a similar situation. Thanks in advance!
