    It is required when you get to the interview stage What country are you from? If you go to your country's US embassy website they should have a list of where to acquire original documents and where to officially translate them. My country didn't require a translation and yours might not too

    Sometimes there are Facebook groups that notify you about open slots if the consulate is popular enough. Personally I was successful only after emailing the embassy to please inform me the moment when slots are open, and even then I was too slow and had to ask again. I guess I got lucky or happened across a nice person? Other than that, I'm not sure much else can be done except to just be persistent. It's really frustrating though and I totally understand
