  1. The British version is way better and with Top Gear was one of my favourite shows to watch in the UK.

What is it with Fox sticking crappy overbearing back ground music to everything? And, it took them 50 minutes to actually tackle the root of the problem with that restaurant; namely, Peter was robbing them blind and they couldn't cook anything to an acceptable because 1) he'd get in the way, 2) the kitchen equipment was busted and 3) Peter would come along and eat what was intended for the costumers!

I'll watch it next week to see it if is any better but I won't bother with future episodes if it is as ####### as last night's show.

I really miss the quality programming on the BBC and Channel 4 in the UK :( .

  2. Woman spends night locked in loo

Police started a missing person alert for a great-grandmother - only for her to turn up 12 hours later having been locked in a public loo overnight.

Gwyneth Coles, 77, of Pickering, North Yorkshire, got locked in the town's toilets after nipping in following a bus journey on Monday evening.

Although an attendant locking up shouted to check the building was empty, he failed to hear her answer.

Flushed council officials apologised and sent Mrs Coles a bunch of flowers.

Mrs Coles' relatives and friends became worried when she did not return home and called North Yorkshire Police who issued a nationwide missing person alert.

"I thought, I'm here for the night, they're closed and I've been forgotten and they don't open 'til seven tomorrow morning what am I going to do?" said Mrs Coles.

The resilient great-grandmother put on four jumpers she had in her bags and settled down for a night under the tiles.

She even managed to drift off to sleep for part of the night.

But salvation came when the caretaker returned at 0700 BST on Tuesday morning and found her inside.

Mrs Coles said: "I couldn't tell anyone, there was no way of communicating you see.

"I'd no mobile phone on me, there's nothing in here, you know, emergency equipment. So I thought, nobody knows I'm here."

John Davidson of Rydale District Council said: "Very unfortunately Mrs Coles was locked into our public toilets overnight which was extremely unfortunate.

"We're very sorry that this happened."

  3. I thought I'd share this rather funny commercial of Paddington Bear trying Marmite instead of Marmalade on his sandwhiches. It has caused a little controversy in the UK as traditionalists have accused Paddington of selling out and that a bear of genuine integrity would not forsake the sugary sweetness of orange cut marmalade, seriously - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7002615.stm.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eean1pNVkoY

For those who don't know what Marmite is I copied this from Wikipedia -

Marmite is a British and New Zealand savoury spread made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing.

Both the British and New Zealand versions are sticky, dark brown pastes with a distinctive, powerful taste that polarises consumer opinion but the recipes are different. This distinctive taste is reflected in the British company's marketing slogan: "Love it or hate it". It is similar to the Australian Vegemite and Swiss Cenovis, and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, while Bovril is not.

Edit: I tried to insert the You Tube video directly into this post but didn't seem to be able to do it. So I'll just paste the link to the webpage instead.

  4. what jj is hinting at is that obama is an oreo.......which always starts a brawl.

:D In England if a black person is accused of acting white then he is called a coconut. Very un-PC, obviously but funny for it's inventiveness.

If Obama had been the first to rush down to Jena and walk at the head of the march then he would have been accused of jumping on the band-wagon and he doesn't need to do that because that is exactely what Hillary does.

Why can't people just be people and get over the whole black-white thing? To keep talking of racism is to only perpetuate it.

  5. Vacuum Screamer

A US mother-of-three has invented a sex toy that connects to a vacuum cleaner to give an orgasm in just ten seconds.

The gadget, called Vortex Vibrations, works by concentrating the air flow to create a rapid and gentle vibration, reports the Sun.

Inventor Joanne Drysdale claims it can give multiple, back-to-back orgasms lasting up to a minute a time - and it does not even touch the skin.

The 49-year-old former toolmaker was cleaning her carpets when she came up with the idea for Vortex, which sells for £35 through lovehoney.co.uk.

She saw how a piece of rubber that had got caught in the nozzle was gently resonating in the air flow. She also felt a soft stimulation to her fingertips as she tried to remove the rubber.

At the time Joanne, from Utah, had not had sex for 15 years following her divorce.

She said: "In my attempts to alleviate frustration, I began to think what I could do. I noticed how the rubber moved in the top of the vacuum.

"After several hours, I came up with the prototype. The first time I tried it I reached an orgasm within 10 seconds.

"That was when I knew I was on to something that could potentially bring pleasure to all women."

Joanne Drysdale aka Peppermint Patty - I always knew she'd be the one to end up divorced and desperate.

  6. Last time I went to the Scottish Highlands (and I've been a fair few times) it was full of Kiwis and Australians. Every pub, hotel and restaurant seemed to have one or two there working to earn some money. Was quite humorous when you'd go in, ask for a drink and the bartender spoke to you in a genuine Aussie accent!

Same is true in London. This is generally how they order their drinks in most pubs, "I'll have a pint of beer and a job please, mate".

  7. God, will Arsenal ever win the Champions League?

What was Thierry Henry's real reason for leaving the Gunners?

Will we win the Premiership this season?

Why can't Hleb take more shots on goal?

Is Jesus a Gooner? (I am pretty sure he is)

Who will Wenger sign in January?

Was Michael Thomas' goal against Liverpool in the '89 season finale a miracle?

Could you please prevent my beloved team from being sold out of England to a greedy gangster from Russia?

Can I watch Arsenal games in heaven?

Why do Tottenham fans hate us so much?

Is it possible to arrange for the Spuds to get relegated?

Okay, so I have more than 1 question but, God loves us all, even the bad ones among us ;) , so I am sure He wouldn't mind answering more than 1 of my questions.

  8. As a Christian would you steal that which does not belong to you? No matter the reasons behind the objection to the material--it is stealing if you never intended to return the books. You are not one of those Christians that think its okay to blow up abortion clinics or assasinate OBGYN Doctors are you?

No, I don't agree with her course of action. Two wrongs don't make a right so stealing books from the library because you disagree with the content is also morally reprehensible. Besides where would it end? Muslims stealing Vegetales books because of the psuedo-Christian message within those stories? Homosexuals stealing every 99c Mills and Boon trashy-romance novel because of the lack of representation of the gay community in those books? Vegetarians stealing cookbooks to discourage people from eating meat? (I am vegetarian by the way). If this scenario were played out for real our public libraries would be empty in a very short space of time. And, no as a Christian I don't think it is okay to blow up abortion clinics and OBGYN doctors. Boy, you really mis-read my original post and then some... but that is not surprising coming from a Hillary supporter. Urgh.

I don't think I misread anything--you stated you were opening a can of worms and then you said you sit back and eat your popcorn--so you clearly intended to attract an opposing view. And nothing about the original story related to being a Christian view to be opposed to the sex-ed books.

But then again you apparently have something else in common with JoAn Karkos--she went to the library to find controversy--you are not just handed a random book as you walk into a library--you have to actively seek out the content you are wishing to check--and then once you find what you sought, you are then offended? I guess that is what you are doing now--you interjected your Christian belief that had nothing to do with the original story and with the can worms and pop corn run for cover statement you are too inviting controversy.

Yes you're right. I knew that my opinion wouldn't necessarily be one that everybody agreed with and I qualified my original statement by saying "As a Christian I too would be offended." I saw the story posted here and inserted my own opinion based on my own moral judgement like many others have done. But, I think you paticularly objected to my statement because I identified myself as a Christian. I think you are the one with a prejudice not me and I apologise for voicing an opinion. I mistakenly thought that this was an open forum where issues could be discussed. I didn't realise I was meant to just validate the consesus opinion. I guess I'll have to go and re-read the forum rules.

  9. As a Christian would you steal that which does not belong to you? No matter the reasons behind the objection to the material--it is stealing if you never intended to return the books. You are not one of those Christians that think its okay to blow up abortion clinics or assasinate OBGYN Doctors are you?

Anyone is perfectly at liberty to feel offended by anything. However, to then take this feeling of offense and use it to justify denying someone else the right to make their own choices is wrong.

Absolutely. However, I think society has the right to protest and speak up against objectional content.

  10. If I as the Librarian I would ask to have theift charges filed against JoAn Karkos. She clearly intended to steal the books in question, and her act of sending in 20 dollars does not free her of commiting the crime. Its a library not a bookstore. If she does not want to read those books then do not check them out.

What I think she was objecting to was not so much the content but the way the material was presented. However, as I have not seen the books in question I can only speculate on that point. As a Christian, I too would be offended if the book presented issues such as abortion and homosexuality as alternative but acceptable lifestyle choices. Alas, I suspect I am opening a can of worms here by saying that and I suspect I shall be in the minority with such a view point...

-Runs for cover and grabs the popcorn on the way out...-

  11. Man, Rebecca Loos is just nasty! You could land a 747 on that nose! Oh well, David could always hand in a transfer request and move to the New York Red Bulls. I am sure Victoria has as much chance of resurecting her singing career in NY as she does in LA, ie: no chance this decade. Failing that Becks could always hope his contract is picked up by the New Orleans Looters or the Detroit Drive-bys. I hear they are looking for a few more singers in New Orleans to make up for the ones who left after Katrina.

  12. :help: where do I get my Police report from I like in manchester so do I get GMP report that has the nation info on it or do I have to get one from the metropolitian police. I'm asking cause the local police station gave me a different from to fill in than the metro form 3019 that is shown on here. Anyone from the manchester area could you help me with this one please.

    Thanks in advance

    Eric

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I am quite sure that you want a national Police Report, the police call it a Subject Access Request. The Embassy in London want to know if the Police National Computer holds any information on you. As the PNC is a nationwide database it will therefore cover all areas of the UK and not just Manchester. In my force, Thames Valley Police, we wouldn't process a request for a Police Report unless you came into the station itself with ID because any Tom, ####### or Harry could download a form and then send it in. Therefore, when you go into your local nick make sure they give you the form for a national Police Report and not just the local one.

  13. absolutely, but then who does this law apply to (i.e. citizen vs. non-citizen)?

Well, speaking for myself (and NOT for everyone else) I feel like it's my right (not a privilege) as an American citizen to marry whom I choose, and allow them to live and work in this country. This is the principle behind the K1 and K3 visas, but my only gripe is that the process takes so long - especially since it doesn't have to, with so much new and better technology.

Exactely  ! That is precisely how my wife (USC) feels.

  14. Having thousands of people sitting around waiting for in some cases for years on end for a name check to be processed is hardly benefiting National Security. As I have said before anyone aiming to come into the US in order to commit mass-terror is hardly likely to do so by making sure he/she files the correct paperwork and then wait for the FBI to clear his/her application before carrying out their nefarious deeds! Besides that the current system is being made a mockery of by the fact that there is a huge border to the south of us that is to all intents and purposes un-policed and anyone and everyone, who so desires, can cross it without permission.

Actually my rights also extend to Homeland Security. When US or British foreign policy, which I don't have a say in, potentially makes me a target for some fanatic then I have the right to demand that my government protects me and that entails securing all borders and checking the backgrounds of all people entering the country where I live no matter for how long they intend to say. Remember I worked in law enforcement in the UK therefore, I have some knowledge, a lot more than you I suspect, as to what makes people feel safe and how that can be achieved successfully and with minimum disruption and distress to the vast majority.

Finally, I also have a degree in American Studies and know many professors who would state that the government was designed to work for me and my interests whilst the constitution was framed to protect me from tyranny. Therefore, it is my right to ask the government to reform a system that is broken and corrupt and prevents me from living my life. I am not saying that the government is preventing me from living the life of a rock star or multi-millionaire, they are preventing me from living any kind of life that I should reasonably expect to live, such as, working for a wage, travelling freely to where I want, when I want and that includes the opportunity to gain a driver's license. My wife is a tax payer and a voter therefore the government is accountable to her. I was led to believe that the US was a federal democracy not a dictatorship therefore the 535 members of Congress are supposed to represent my wife's interests and those of all other US citizens which brings me back nicely to national security and the lack there of it.

I do not think you will get an argument from anyone here that the system need to be fixed. Annie and I have long been proponents that the Name check should be done prior to entry.

That is why I would encourage you to get involved in reforming the system.

Oh and just to point out, America is not a democracy, it is a democratic republic. There is a slight difference.

In my original post I said America was a federal democracy what I meant to say, as someone else has pointed out, is that the US is a Federal Republic.

As an American Studies major that was a pretty big mistake to make on my part :P . However, in my defence I was trying keep my train of thought going so I could get my point across.

  15. Lest either of you think I'm 'hard-hearted', I'd urge you to take a look at my timeline. You will then realize that I do have sympathy for what you are going through. But you will also see my husband and I waited FAR longer than either of you have so far, and probably far longer than either of you will potentially wait (since our wait fell into a category of 1% or so of petitioners).

BUT, I hate to break it to you that the US constitution doesn't give us the right to live our lives in maximum comfort and to our convenience.....and in my opinion that is the point you are missing. The 'oppression' it protects us from is tyranny and ruthless aggression by our leaders -- waiting a while for an employment document or a greencard is hardly either.

I agree that it should not take ages and ages to check someone's background. But I don't agree with that from the standpoint of making it easy for me to go to work, buy a home, or start a family. It is ridiculous that we are held up on these things - but immigration was a CHOICE we made as international couples. As with most things that are unusual or out-of-the-norm, there is aggravation and inconvenience. US Immigration laws are part of US Federal Code and can be changed - poof - with the stroke of a pen. A negative public tide can cause your elected officials to sway even further from the protections you seek and the things you are demanding. If you consider what you are going through 'oppressive' I urge you to follow any pending changes that will be proposed in the future regarding immigration, because what has been on the table is potentially for more oppressive than what you are presently experiencing.

I've been where you are. I understand. I agree the system is broken and needs improvement. I however also believe they are making headway in that regard. I've been around the system longer than either of you and I can vouch for the fact that things are FAR FASTER than they used to be. But - they aren't doing these things faster to please us! They are doing it for National Security! Do not confuse what you consider your 'rights' with the goal of Homeland Security. The two are NOT one and the same.

I'm not making excuses for them. But I am suggesting you step back and take a look at what you are 'demanding'. The constitution doesn't give you or your wife the right to demand such things at all. If you don't believe me, take it up with any US History professor at any university. We are asking the government for a PRIVILEGE.

They have ZERO accountability to us. This isn't McDonald's where you drive-thru and have it your way. It just isn't.

Having thousands of people sitting around waiting for in some cases for years on end for a name check to be processed is hardly benefiting National Security. 16. We pretty much saw all the big blockbusters of the Summer and I would rank the movies we saw in the theatre in this order -

    1) Ratatouille

    2) Hot Fuzz

    3) The Bourne Ultimatum

    4) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoneix

    5) Transformers

    6) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

    7) Miss Potter

    8) Stranger Than Fiction

    9) TMNT

    10) Becoming Jane

    11) Shrek the Third

    12) Spiderman 3

Haven't seen Ocean's 13 or Surfs Up yet but I have heard that they were both really good.

  17. This may be grounds for a new thread, but I just want to share with everyone: A few weeks ago, I wrote a few looong emails to MSNBC.com and the editors of Newsweek magazine (one of my faves) requesting that they do a feature on immigration - with an emphasis on legal immigrants.

If anyone is interested, message me and I'll send you a copy of the letter. Maybe if we get more people bugging them, they'll respond? It would be nice to have the plight of legal immigrants highlighted, for what its worth.

It's just such a shame that so much focus is put on illegal immigration. And I say that as the wife of a Mexican who entered on K1.

I'd be interested to know what they had to say in response to your wife's letters. I am surprised that no-one in the mass-media has really focussed on the plight of us legals. In fact I have been thinking recently of writing to Glenn Beck (CNN) to make him aware of the plight us legals find ourselves in.
