  1. Thanks for all the responses, guys! We were able to get someone else to accept the document and they are going to forward it to us in Canada next-day. As for why I didn't cross over, I was told that picking up documents is considered non-essential and I would have to actually go home (my car plates are from Texas since it's where I reside so it would be obvious if I crossed over and then tried to return after). As a result, I was advised not to take the risk, being that I need to take my wife to her appointment and everything. It looks like we're on the up and up there now though.

But did anyone listen to the new Ford talk? They are closing provincial travel aside from "essential" services. According to multiple sources, filing for immigration is not considered essential but we are wondering if the actual interview would be. There's no answer I could find regarding this and we aren't sure if we need to just head to Montreal now and spend the next couple weeks there at a hotel before the border closes or if we just go on as normal...

Are they willing to send it to Canada if you cover the additional postage?

They said no because it's a government document and they can only verify who receives it in the U.S. (since it should only be delivered to the party it's being sent to and nobody else). We have the copy so I think what we may have to do is wing it and hope for the best (carry copy, and as another poster said, show the receipt from when it was shipped out and the voicemail left from the city explaining that it was sent but got returned). I'm hoping those will help confirm that 1) it does exist and 2) we've been trying to obtain another certified copy. Will also give them the number to the city clerk in case they want to call to verify anything.

  3. Hi everyone, we are prepping for our interview in May and ran into two potential complications we aren't sure what to do about.

    1) We called everywhere around us for passport photos here in Windsor, Ontario, and nobody seems to be allowing them because they "aren't essential." Can we bring our own photos to the interview?

    and

    2) Our marriage certificate was lost during a move and we think movers may have tossed the stack. We've replaced all other papers but this one is bringing issues. We ordered a new one in the States to be shipped to a family member in Michigan to then remail to Windsor. After waiting over a month, the courthouse reached out and said it was bounced back because it's a government document and the person whose name it is under must be there to accept it. The problem with this is that the family members that would be accepting it all work during mail hours. And I was told I can't cross the border unless I'm actually going home (my car has Texas plates so it would be obvious if I said I was going home and then I'm hitting the system again the same day or the day after when we aren't supposed to be traveling as-is) so I can't just go pick it up myself.

We are at a loss on both of these and what options there are available. We do have copies of the marriage cert, but not the original. And we never rushed the passport photos because reading on the immigration subreddit everyone kept saying they are considered essential and that any Shoppers can do it. All of them here, however, say otherwise.

    Thank you.

My husband is essential in US but I can work remotely and my daughters school is mostly online.

Do they never give you troubles when you say you work from US? Customs tried to catch me on this once then I told them I travel with my laptop because I work from US....I don't know what's the right answer to this. I obviously work for my Canadian employer.

I've never had them ask on either side for either of us, they generally just ask how long I'm staying (or she's staying) and where we're going (her house/my house) and let us go. Sometimes they will harass us though (like one time the border guard aggressively asked why I couldn't just marry an American and asking if I "routinely" search for people from other countries to marry, having me explain how we met and everything and seeming irate about how when I found out she was from Canada I didn't just stop talking to her). He eventually let me go but he seemed really upset with the fact I was married to someone from Canada.

Congratulations, great to see something moving and people getting reunited with their loved ones.

Since I'm quite new to the process can you please explain how are you able to stay in US and only fly for the interview? Are you visiting?

I have my I130 in process, but perspective of being separated for another year or so is heartbreaking to say the least.

Different person here but in the case of my wife and I, for the past couple years we've just bounced between the countries every 6 months so that neither of us is overstaying and we don't have to spend time apart. But we work remotely so the situation is also vastly different than the "norm." If you're in a similar situation, though, you should have zero issues moving between the two countries. Worst case is you get pulled into secondary checks (happens pretty often for me but they let it go after, usually pretty quickly).

Question for you, I’m DQ’d Aug 11, and hoping to have a interview by April. You mentioned an extension of stay in the US, the I-539. How exactly does that process work? Just send me a private message if you can.

I am wondering the same. Based on what I can tell it costs around $500 to even file for that. Trying to decide if I'm driving from Texas to Canada next month or if we can stay here (wife's 6 months ends the middle of Feb and we were DQd last August). If we go back to Canada we are forced to crash with family since we couldn't afford two places, so it's preferred to stay here State-side...

  7. Hi all! I'm new to the forums and trying to fully understand the process. We've already done fingerprinting/police certificate (DQ on August 18th). I noticed a lot of people have statuses that say they are ready for interview but I'm wondering where you see this or if we're in limbo at this point. Here's what our USCIS status shows:

    CASE NUMBER:    XXX
    VISA CLASS:    CR1
YOUR CASE IS CURRENTLY AT:    NVC
    FOREIGN STATE OF CHARGEABILITY:    CANADA
    INTERVIEW LOCATION:    MONTREAL
    PRIORITY DATE:    22-JAN-2020

Is this what it should look like when you're pending interview? Reading the USCIS site, it seems like once you fulfill the NVC requirements it should have been sent to the consulate, but it says it's still at NVC.

    Thanks!
