  1. Me: studied Latin, French, German, Spanish and Italian in HS and college, lived in Italy for 2 years - can speak some basic Nepali and a smattering of expressions in other languages (Japanese, Hawaiian, Hindi, modern Greek). I also speak Hawaiian pidgin FWIW - grew up in da 'aina li'dat.

Govi: Native Nepali. Studied English in school, also knows Hindi (since we are going to India in 2 months, glad one of us does!)

  2. Thanks Eileen and everyone

I guess he will need to get a visa as well - I need to double check the current fees. If anyone is going to India be sure you check the new visa rules - since the Mumbai bombings they have made a lot of changes. The biggest headache now is that you can no longer fly to India, pop on over to Nepal, Bangladesh, etc. and fly back to India unless you are in the second country for more than 2 months - we were planning on doing this before but changed our plans once we read of the new rule. There are many many discussions on Indiamike forum about it. Another rule is that you need proof of address to apply for an India tourist visa - either a government-issued ID(apart from your passport) or a major utility bill.

We haven't made all of our plans yet but we definitely want to see a lot of wildlife areas - Keoladeo National Park is on my top 5 list. Vrindaban is also a place I want to see. We also want to see the Taj of course - I am getting tired of people asking me if I saw it when I went to India in '03 and saying no. :P Any suggestions of 'must see' places would be welcome - though we are only focusing on North India since we will only be going for 3 weeks and want to have some time to relax.

  3. Sorry I have not been on VJ in a while - what a change!!! It will take some time to get used to the new look... :)

Anyway, Govi and I are planning on taking a vacation in India in May-June and he still has the 2yr conditional GC. I went on the USCIS website and it doesn't look like he will have any problems coming back to the US, but I am wondering if he will need an India visa - as a USC I definitely do. He has a Nepali passport and normally Nepalis can enter India without a visa, however he was telling me some friends(Nepali LPRs) have had problems entering India without a visa.

  4. right on. my mother-in-law tells my husband he needs to buy me jewelry. when i told her i got my second holes in my ear, she said good, he needs to buy you more earrings :D

You do need more earrings. They are important beauty items so you can look your best....for him...yeah that's it...lol. I think you need matched sets so you don't look like something is missing. B)

This usually works for me when my husband wonders why on earth I need so many salwar kameez....

  5. Hey everyone.... I am American and my husband is Nepali... we pretty much speak Neplish, lol... My Nepali grammar is poor but I know enough vocabulary to figure out the gist of a conversation. Govi's English is good but he does speak with a pretty heavy accent(which I love but can be hard to understand if you are not used to it).

We live in Queens, NY, which probably has every desi community you can imagine, no shortage of desi khana here... One day this weekend (probably Columbus Day) we want to go to Richmond Hill for some Indo-Caribbean food, chutney CDs and Bollywood DVDs 3/$10... :)

  6. Thanks everybody for your good wishes.... Govi likes it here but of course we will see when winter comes, LOL... He found a job cooking at an Indian-Pakistani restaurant...the pay is not great but he enjoys the work and the best thing is it's only a 10-minute walk from our apartment... He brought home some samosas that he had made and I kid you not, they were the best samosas I had ever had...

  7. In Nepal there is a similar festival called Tij or Teej where the wife fasts for her husband's good health and believe it or not we did not realize the day until after I had already eaten and we looked at the Nepali calendar... This year the festivals all were so early, usually Tij is in Sept. but this year it was in late August... Next year I will observe it properly.

  8. We miss the sound of chickens, mynahs and crows everywhere..... Bhaktapur dahi with mango and beaten rice.... yak cheese pizza(where's a drool smilie???)....some of the best trekking in the world only a short bus-ride away....wearing chappals everywhere... music playing everywhere(lok geet or sometimes Nepali pop but NOT gangsta rap)... really good chiyaa(chai)... of course Aama-Baa-Didi-Bahini.... cheap taxis or when all else fails the 'micro'... sadhus....monkeys outside the window.....

  9. I am so sorry to anyone who was worried about me since I haven't posted in a few months....

Everything is going good so far - Govi and I arrived at JFK on July 11. We had a great time in Nepal but of course the hardest part was saying goodbye to Govi's family... :crying: I will post pics soon I promise :star:

Now is the hard part, finding a job in this economy but hopefully Govi will find something at a store or restaurant... there is a Nepali employment agency that might be able to help him. He got his GC on 8/11 and SS last week.

He is bored sometimes but loves to watch old Nepali movie clips on Youtube and go to Nepal news sites or walk around the neighborhood, fortunately everything is walkable or on bus or train lines so lack of DL is no issue, even I have never had one. Money is tight of course so I have been trying to sell as much as possible on eBay.

just wanted to let everyone know we are fine, still honeymooning :luv:

  10. Thanks again everybody!!! I got the best birthday gift from the Nepali electric company - they left the power on long enough that I could have a nice long chat with my husband... :D Lately he comes on for 5 minutes and then poof!!! Damn load-shedding...

The real celebration will be on 5/22 - watch for seismic tremors in the Kathmandu valley ;)
