  1. Thank you Om! It's actually tomorrow though. laughing.gif

oops8rh.gif Don't know why I'm a day ahead. I only logged in to wish you good luck on your interview because I knew it was coming up and you were such a big support to all of us here. Sending best wishes on your interview tomorrow or in some parts of the USA it's now after midnight so it would be today. I'm sure you'll do great. :)luv.gif

  2. Sending best wishes on your interview today. It will be alright. It's up to the CO's discretion if they need the original copies or not. All our documents were copies and they never asked for any of the originals of anything. If they do ask for it then they'll give you a paper at the interview saying a decision is pending based on getting the original documents and you'll have time to get them to him afterwards. If they request another medical you'll get the same pending a decision paper and a notice of what additional paperwork they require such as a new medical is requested. No big deal because you'll have time with a delayed decision pending.

  3. Thank you walshy and Jamericanlove! We're back from Portland and done with the oath ceremony. It all went well.

Here's a summary of our experience for the oath ceremony at the Portland immigration office.

We left Eugene just after 11:00 AM and arrived in Portland around 1:00 PM. This time we parked right in front of the immigration office on NW Overton St. and paid for the maximum 3 hours of parking which was $4.80. Then we went inside and presented our letter to security for the oath ceremony and security checked us through. We proceeded to the second floor to sit in the waiting area. We checked in at the reception desk #4 just encase and they looked over the paperwork and said we had to fill out the questions and sign and date the form for the oath ceremony and then wait until someone comes to get us around 1:30 PM.

In the waiting room it became very crowded. This time we waited closer to the stairs instead of in the back of the room. A woman came out and asked for our attention around 1:20 PM and instructed everyone who was doing the oath ceremony today to please fill out their forums by answering the questions and putting Portland, Oregon and sign and date it. She told us there was a very large group today taking the oath and she would be back around 1:40 PM with further instructions. Then she came back at 1:40 PM and asked for everyone's attention again. She stood in the middle of the room and asked the people having the oath ceremony today to please follow her, along with any of their interpreters, and for the rest of the friends and family to please keep waiting in the waiting room upstairs until they're called overhead to join them. She told those naturalizing to have their papers ready and their green cards out because they will be turning them in today. Then a huge group of people got up and followed her downstairs and most of the room cleared out. There wasn't as many friends and family left behind.

Around 2:15 PM came the announcement over head for friends and family to please come downstairs and join the rest of them for the oath ceremony. The room was packed with just a few chairs on the other side of the room for people to sit down and the rest were standing. We were told the ceremony lasts around an hour if everything goes smoothly and depending on the size of the group. They said to please take as many pictures as we wanted. My digital camera wasn't working well but I did get some on my cell phone.

Everyone was sitting in rows of chairs. We were told that there were over 50 people taking the oath today from 26 countries. Then they had each person stand up when their name was called and announce what country they were from. There were people from all over the world. Then they played a short video with historical pictures and locations of the United States. Then they gave another speech welcoming them and explained what it means to be an American and take the oath. Then they were asked to raise their right hand and take the oath. After that there was a video of President Barak Obama welcoming them to America as new citizens. Then they were asked to sing the national anthem and the words were projected on the screen. Then came a music video "I'm Proud to Be an American" with pictures of patriotic shots throughout. After that a boy was called to the stage to lead the pledge of allegiance. His parents and other relatives were all becoming citizens today and he was proud of them. Then we all said the pledge of allegiance. Then another speech and they directed every citizen to stand when they called their name. As they stood they were presented with their naturalization certificate and an American Flag and shook hands.

They told us to keep our naturalization certificates safe because it costs around $600 to replace them. After that came the people in matching yellow shirts giving their announcement on the civic duty of voting and they passed out pens and voter registration cards. Then it was over and everyone was allowed to take pictures on the stage in front of the flags or with anyone there. We were done by 3:00 PM sharp. Afterwards we went outside and took pictures in front of the immigration sign on the building and then we went downtown in the Pearl District and walked around and ate a small celebration meal before heading back to Eugene. Portland is really beautiful and they're already getting set up with Christmas decorations downtown. Also on the drive home we saw many shopping places already set up with Christmas lights.

We're very thankful for this day to come and to finally have the immigration journey behind us for good!

Sending our congratulations and best wishes to everyone before us that became citizens, and to everyone after us who have upcoming interviews and oath ceremonies!

Happy Thanksgiving!! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! AND Happy Holidays!

  4. Yay! Congratulations!!! I am glad the interview went very well for you! Portland is the best! dancin5hr.gif

You should have told me and you could stay with us overnight in our apartment in Portland, so you did not have to drive back the next day for the Oath Ceremony smile.png Good luck tomorrow. Drive safely. The Ceremony is very nice. Have fun!

Blessings to you and Happy Thanksgiving! good.gif

Thank you, that is very kind of you and Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

Congrats to you OM! I'm glad your journey is finally almost over. In less than 24 hours you will be a proud USC! good.gif

Thank you! Also thank you for fixing the format and I wish you the best on your upcoming interview. I'll update tomorrow when the oath ceremony is over, and I'll let you highlight us red so as not to mess up the format again. blush.png

  5. Good luck today DR.A O/ Om! I know you'll do great! good.gif

Thank you Jamericanlove! We had the interview today and citizenship was approved! Here's a summary of how it went.

We left Eugene around 10:30 AM and arrived in Portland around 12:50 PM. The letter says not to arrive early because there is limited space in the waiting area so we timed it to arrive on time. Our appointment was at 12:55 PM on the second floor of the immigration office. We brought a bag of evidence encase they requested any original copies we submitted or proof of marriage since we applied on the three year marriage rule. We parked in the all day parking lot under the overpass next to the immigration office and paid the $7 parking fee encase we had a same day oath ceremony.

We then went into the immigration office and presented our letter for the citizenship interview to security and they checked us through. Then we went to the second floor. When you reach the lobby of the second floor there are bathrooms in front of you, CO offices to the right, and registration and the waiting area through the doors to the left. We went left to registration and checked in for our interview. Everyone has to wait in a line and check in at the 4th window. He showed his letter again and his green card. Then they took his finger prints and a picture of him. Then we were told to go sit in the waiting area and someone will come call him by name.

We waited an hour from our appointment time until our interview. The place was busy and packed. I was afraid we missed our appointment because we might not have heard them calling us but they were just an hour behind. During our wait at around 1:30 PM a lady came out to make an announcement to everyone. She said she wanted all the friends and family to wait in the waiting area for now and she only wanted the people with the oath ceremony letters to follow her downstairs. Then around half the room cleared out as people got up and followed her. There must have been close to 60 people taking the oath. We knew then that we weren't going to make the same day oath ceremony as we missed it starting and hadn't had our interview yet. A half hour later at around 2 PM they called our name for the interview. Then just right after that there came an announcement overhead for everyone else waiting in the waiting area that came with those who were having their oath ceremony today to please come downstairs and join them now. That's when the rest of the room cleared out till it was nearly empty. It must have been 100 people that went downstairs to join them with only four other people left in the waiting area.

The interview didn't last long. In and out in 15 minutes. The man only wanted to see the Driver's License, Green Card and Passport. Then he went down the paper asking questions and stopped when six questions were answered right. Then there was one written question. The only personal question asked was where was your wife born. The officer told him that we really didn't need to bring all that evidence with us and it was too much. Then he told us we're approved and asked if we'd like to come back for the oath ceremony tomorrow. The oath ceremony is held daily at 1:30 PM. He apologized because we missed it today and he knew we drove two hours already for the interview. We took the offer for the oath ceremony tomorrow. Then he printed off our oath ceremony letter.

Then we drove home since it was cheaper than staying in a hotel because our car is fuel efficient and we didn't have a change of clothes or anything with us to stay the night. We called work and cancelled our appointments for tomorrow to clear the schedule for the oath ceremony. So four hours on the road today and we get to do it again tomorrow. Then we'll be done!

  6. Just curious if anybody knows about this. Does the beginning part of this process--at USCIS and NVC--usually take longer for applicants from the Middle East? If so, is it significantly longer? Applications are being processed crazy fast lately and I'm thinking I probably shouldn't get my hopes up along with everyone else. Anybody know?

The beginning part of the process from USCIS to NVC looks at the petitioner of the application to see if they're eligible to apply and not so much the beneficiary of the application. So that part of the application process typically takes the general routine processing time at that point in time.

When the application hits the NVC to the Embassy level is when they look at the beneficiary and "the relationship" to see if they're eligible for the visa. That's when it can get hung up and processing times may vary. Immigration officials will tell you it's a case by case situation which in part it is.

As for why things get hung up in MENA it generally has to do with the country they're petitioning from. Part of it is name checks and back ground checks which can take a long time. Original records have to be requested and looked at. Even if it's an insurance claim mentioning the person as a witness to an accident. In developing countries where records are still written, or not properly recorded in a timely manner, and not everything is electronic things can take longer. It can also take longer in countries going through political turmoil such as the Arab Spring that tends to disrupt administrative processing both in the offices of the home country and at the foreign embassies as they routinely have to shut down during the chaos. Common spellings of names or different variations of the spelling of a name can hang a case up for awhile too again because they have to comb through at all the original records. Sometimes due to unfortunate circumstances beyond the petitioner and/or the beneficiary control things in life also can delay the process.

That said our process from filing for the K3 visa in 2007 and going through the US Embassy in Cairo until we reached the visa in hand in 2010 took us 3 years.

  7. Thankyou soooo much for such a detailed anwer! Yes I think u r right that expedite might not work but I was thinking I might be there Till June July atleast to sit for the match and I thought that my deadline is something like may that's y I was aj anxious. But if people can give it even till December then it's not a big issue. And the people u r tellig who lost the residency because of the visa they were applying for tourist or j1 right? It must be sooo depressing for them to give it up just because of uscis! I can imagine it. But still Thankyou very much! I guess I should just sit back and wait and see what fate has there and when I get approved and plan accordingly after that smile.png

Yes they were going for the J-1 or H1-B visas to work here.

Also if you plan to sit for the CS before the Sept. 15th application date in order to become ECFMG certified I know there is an annual delay for sitting for Steps July through August where the scores won't be available until after the application date. This year the last day to sit for a Step was June. 27th in order to get the scores in time for the Sept. 15th application date to become ECFMG certified. Some say being ECFMG certified before the date gives them an edge to getting interviews.

Just know Steps taken between July and August will go longer than the 3-4 weeks for the score reports to be released. They do this every year.

  8. Guys I know it's a pretty old thread but it's the only one I found concerning my issue. I plan to sit in the 2015 match but the problem is my 130 is in process so it doesn't look like I will be able to give the cs on time. I will be done with both steps till march hopefully. Do u guys think I could apply for a tourist visa? Or try to get an expedite on this basis would it work? I really dint wanna lose this match sad.png everything was going according to time and now uscis decides to make the processing time so long. Please reply! And also lemme know till what month do u thnk I could give the cs on Time to sit in the match?

Were u able to get the tourist visa?

What does the Indian/Pakistani online medical groups going for the USMLE say? I know they have a large network and may be of better help to your with more current information.

I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge. If you're going for the 2015 match that means you are submitting your applications in September 2014 for the medical residency which means that you can take the CS at the very latest by Dec. 31st, 2014. It takes 8 weeks for the scores to come back which means they will be due before the Rank Order List (ROL) deadline. On the IMG forums they recommend Dec. 31st as the last day to take the CS too. I know one Indian woman right now who hasn't taken the CS yet and says she's got 9 interviews this season. Her scores are very high in the 250+/270+ range. I asked how that's possible she has that many interviews without the CS and she said 6 of them are from contacts. So it's still possible to apply for the match without the CS like American medical grads do and take the CS during the interview season. As long as you're ECFMG certified before the ROL deadline you should be good to go.

You may try for a tourist visa to take the CS but there is no guarantee you'll get it. It all depends on your embassy. In the past few years we've known a few doctors who sat for the match, went through the interview season, got matched, and then their work visa didn't come in time for them to start their residency so they had to give up their spot to be filled by someone else. There was absolutely nothing any of them could do about it. This has happened several times and there is no control over the visa process so I highly doubt they will expedite for a tourist visa when they won't expedite for a work a visa for international doctors who've already matched.

Also I know in years past that you can only take the CS in the States but that they've been looking at expanding to an international location in Dubai for international applicants to have access to take the CS. You may check to see if that's available now.

I wouldn't schedule the CS before the proper paperwork was in order to come here and take it. I also don't think they'll approve a tourist visa from your country while the I-130 is in process because they may view that as intent to immigrate instead. I think you have some time for the I-130 to be processed before the 2015 Match and that it may be finished in time. I wouldn't sit for the match and spend the thousands of dollars applying without the I-130 paperwork and visa being in order encase anything goes wrong with the immigration process and there are delays.

We think we can plan our lives accordingly and everything will go smoothly but the immigration process is fickle. We waited three years for our family based visa for my husband to come here. We couldn't have foreseen that kind of delay but it's just the way it worked out. I know one couple who've waiting nine years for a family based visa from Pakistan to the US and they're still waiting. The husband eventually immigrated to Canada and became a naturalized citizen there while still waiting on the US process. The US government doesn't elaborate on the circumstances and Senators and Congressmen can't seem to help them. It is what it is.

  9. Is your account still having issues?

Still don't have access to the personal messaging system.

    So who solicited you?

Not sure I'm supposed to share that but since this is the site related discussion forum might as well share the info encase I'm not the only profile being affected.

I still don't have access to the private messaging system on my account. It's not like I can copy and past the PM, but I can still see the notifications and it was from a cynthiayomireome. When I click on them their account is gone.

Basically it's one of those spam accounts that either posts comments on your page or sends you a pm. They said they liked my profile and wanted me to email them so they'd send me pictures of themselves and tell me secrets. rolleyes.gif Ya right. Like I'm interested . Then instead of responding to a potential bot I reported the solicitation email. Then in 48 hours my entire profile got wiped, my pm's disconnected and my sex changed to a man. I don't think that's even default settings. It seems I got the trick out of the trick or treats this Halloween.

  10. Updating the list with my name change from ॐ (Om) back to Dr. A ♥ O.

  11. I really hope its a mix up. Is the ministry of justice stamp even in english? Everything i see on here is arabic. We did a lot of running around, getting stamps. Waiting in long lines. Etc Etc.

The stamp is in blue or black ink and is put in the top left hand corner. It's a circular stamp with the eagle. They put it over folded corners. It has Arabic writing of the title of their office. It should be on both the Arabic and the official translation of the English version.

  12. We got married at the Ministry Of Justice

If you were married in the Ministry of Justice then you should definitely have a marriage certificate like we have because that is definitely the civil authority they're referring to. There must be some mix up. I'd have the papers double checked at the Ministry of Justice to make sure it's all in order and then resend the marriage certificate and the English translation.

  13. In Cairo.

I dont think the lady whos helping me out with the papers sent out a copy of the arabic certificate. I think she only sent the English translated one. Not sure if that makes any difference but really it doesnt even sound like they need the Arabic copy. FML I dont even know.

If they only sent the English translation then the RFE would request the original Arabic document. If the marriage was registered through the civil authorities then the Ministry of Justice stamp would be on the English translation version and they would know it's properly registered in Egypt by civil authorities as a marriage between a foreigner and an Egyptian and therefore recognized by the United States. The RFE indicates the required stamp is missing.
