  1. Hi everyone, I am happy to report that I received my Permanent Resident Card in the mail today. :):):):)

This website has provided my husband and I (still getting used to saying that  ) with loads of great useful information as well as support. Its nice to know that you are not the only one going through this 'legal' immigration process.

I have been seeing al ot of approvals and interview notices on here this month. Congratulations to everyone.

I really do hope that others who are waiting have a speedy and successful process.

And I'll end, now before it starts sounding like a speech!!

  2. Update!!!

Application Type: I485, APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS

    Current Status: Approval notice sent.

On August 22, 2007, we mailed you a notice that we have approved this I485 APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS. Please follow any instructions on the notice. If you move before you receive the notice, call customer service.

    @forchika Congratulations on your approval!

    God blessed,

    arch & cel

Just to let you know, you won't receive an actual approval notice in the mail. After doing some research I learned that the green card (and the mailer that came with it) is the approval notice.

    Congrats again :)

I think you are incorrect. I received an I-797 NOA in the mail which stated that my AOS was approved. However, I did not receive the green card with it. The notice said that it should arrive within 3 weeks.

I think you are talking about the Welcome letter (??) Usually people receive a welcome letter, and the actual green card (plus mailer). Just the other day someone asked about the "approval notice" here on the messageboard, and from what others answered I learned that there is no actual approval letter...Take a look here:

    http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=82566

To use DR_LHA's words "An Approval Notice was Sent" is USCIS code for "We have mailed your Green Card."

Oops, I guess I was wrong. Thanks for this link.

  4. If your fiancee has a computer and Internet connection you can call for FREE using Skype. It's awesome, is clear, and best of all you can talk for hours not worrying about how much it costs.

We've tried, but she can only get dial-up in her area, and it's quite slow even for dial-up :/

I use Lingo to call my family in T&T. But it costs 14 cents per minute.

My parents also have only dial-up in their area which sucks, but we do have a pretty good connection when we chat using headsets on yahoo messenger.

  5. I'm not sure if I am qualified to complain but here goes.

Last week, I went to my local SSA office and presented my EAD and passport. I was told that apparently my info was not in their system and they will have to check with some other agency (DHS, I assume).

This weekend I received a letter saying that SSA cannot issue me an number because their records show that I am a Permanent Resident and that I need to bring in my card. Well I have not recieved my Green Card as yet because it was only authorised on August 11th. SSA could not find my EAD card# in their system despite me going to their office again today. When one becomes a permanent resident your EAD card becomes invalid.(How am I supposed to know that!!) I guess that is why I never received a welcome notice with my EAD card.

Now as most other folks have done, we applied for both the I-485 and I-765, because we didn't know how long it would take to get a green card, and we wanted me to get a SSN and local driver's license without having to wait for an eternity for the I-485. Having said that, here I am again, in limbo, waiting for a tiny card to arrive in the post to say that I am an "actual" person legally residing in the US. It seems that we wasted money applying for the I-765, since it was approved but still couldn't use is to do anything.:angry:

I must love my husband to be dealing with all this.

    Good luck to everyone!!!

I hope this bit of information is useful to someone.

  6. This is only my opinion.

I find it very hard to sympathise with someone who has intentionally broken US law. It is hard to understand how someone can have a cliam to live in the US just because her son is a USC. If parents are allowed to gain US residency/citizenship based on having a child who is a USC, I am 100% sure that this would encourage a larger influx of immigrants into the US who then have kids here. ( Is there some law out there that relates to this type of situation?)

Why don't the persons who are providing her sanctuary, provide support for new LEGAL residents in the US, esepcially when dealing with issues of getting a SSN, driver's license etc.

I fully acknowledge the contribution of this immigrant to the US economy....but an illegal immigrant working in an airport....can someone please say SECURITY RISK!!!!!

I do hope that in the end that this mother is not separated from her child.

  7. I can generalize an answer also. Any country under the VWP would be the easiest, more difficult for the former eastern block countries, high fraud from countries like Russia and former satelites, P.I's Africa sub-sahara (nigeria), many counties of latin America and the Caribbean, and most difficult from Middle East and Arab countries where all kinds of background checks are required.

Remember, these are general statements and based upon my opinion, just like all of my answers.

There are many islands in the Caribbean, so please don't generalize. I am from the Caribbean and I felt I had a rather quick an easy processing thus far.

    Just my 2 cents

  8. I was just reading this on the USCIS website ( http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/A1.pdf ) and saw this paragraph and began wondering:

What if I filed a petition for a relative when I was a

permanent resident, but I am now a U.S. citizen?

If you become a U.S. citizen while your relative is waiting for a visa,

you can upgrade your relative's visa classification by upgrading your

petition. Husbands/wives and unmarried children under age 21 of

U.S. citizens have visas immediately available to them.

    • If you become a U.S. citizen after your petition is already

approved and sent to the State Department, you should notify

the NVC that you have become a U.S. citizen by sending a copy

of your naturalization certificate to the NVC. Please include a

letter with information regarding your relative and a copy of the

    petition approval.

    • If you become a U.S. citizen and your relative's petition has

not yet been approved by USCIS, check our website or call

    customer service for information.

Under what circumstances could you Petition for a relative while being a LPR? I thught you couldn't petition for relatives while being a LPR? Just wondering if I am not understanding something.

  10. On top of all that, then don't forget that you will never be able to enjoy your retired life together with her.

    I don't understand this point?

think twice before marry a 20 year younger person. Thats my point

It's never an issue with age difference in the beginning. I am not talking about financial issues. But enjoy life together, with same thoughts and life experience are so much better. ( Just my opinion ofcause )

Oh, this is terribly offensive and annoying to those of us in age gap relationships. For someone to come and "assume" what's best for someone else.... that "same thoughts and life experience are so much better..." That is a giant assumption my friend, with no basis in fact. I'm in the happiest relationship of my life with a man 15 years my junior. The only time age is ever a factor is when someone with prejudices comes along and makes it their business to judge us.

Happiness comes in all shapes, sizes, ages, colors and nationalities. Don't assume that what works for you or makes you happy will work for everyone else.

P.S. Please don't use the fact that you used the parenthetical phrase "Just my opinion" to excuse your offensive comments on a public board.

    Well said Sienna

Mr and Mrs Bird: I am an young educated woman who is married to an intelligent man that is much older than I am. We discussed and prayed about all the potential issues we could face in the future, including meeting folks with your "opinion". Are you saying because of our age difference we are doomed to failure? <_<

  11. No, you need to show the actual EAD card to get an SSN (or GC, whichever comes first).

    http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf

IMMIGRATION STATUS: We need to see a current document issued to you by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) showing your immigration status, such as Form I-551, I-94, I-688B, or I-766. We CANNOT accept a receipt showing you applied for the document.

Darn! I think my patience is running out. Everything seems like a waiting game. :(

Sorry to be rude, but you really have not been waiting long enough to have "your patience running out". When you pass 90 days of waiting and are beyond the 'normal processing time', I could understand it then. You card was ordered on day 68, you have been given plenty of great advice. Relax.

Hope you don't get stuck in name check, then you will really have your patience tested.

Everyone has different tolerance levels, thus although 68 days may seem short to you, it seemed very long to me. And having read a lot of posts on here I do know that people have been waiting a long time to get the papers processed. I can empathize with a lot of people on VJ. Going through this process is no easy task reagardless of how long or short you have to wait.

  13. :o:o:o

Just checked the USCIS site again, just for the hell of it (even though I just did that, 15 minutes ago, and there was the usual lack of touches etc), and....

    Receipt Number: MSCXXXXXXXXXX

Application Type: I485, APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS

    Current Status: Card production ordered.

On August 8, 2007, we ordered production of your new card. Please allow 30 days for your card to be mailed to you. If we need something from you we will contact you. If you move before you receive the card, call customer service. You can also receive automatic e-mail updates as we process your case. Just follow the link below to register.

    I'm in shock!! Hahahaha.... :o:D

Hope everyone else who's still waiting gets that same message VERY soon. :)

Wow... I'm done with this USCIS ####### for two years...?!?! How am I going to occupy my time now?

    Congratulations!!!

  14. Here's the quote from the I-9:
Employers must complete Section 2 by examining evidence of identity and employment eligibility within three (3) business days of the date employment begins. If employees are authorized to work, but are unable to present the required document(s) within three business days, they must present a receipt for the application of the document(s) within three business days and the actual document(s) within ninety (90) days.

I would show the employer your receipt for the I-765 and the approval email and show the the original card when it arrives.

    Here's the I-9 document: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf

Can you also use the receipt for the I-765 and the approval e-mail to get SSN, before your card arrives?

    Thanks
