  1. Hi everyone! I am marriage-based applicant, and about to renew my EAD/AP that I also received as marriage-based. I know I need to apply under c9 category but I don't know what to answer for the other question -  my 'current status' question. Before I answered J1 but my visa expired long time ago. I guess I am out of status but I have pending i485. I saw the previous answer, and just want to double-check. Should I write something like "i-485 pending applicant" or 'adjustment of status applicant'?

Your marriage certificate is your name change document. When you get your EAD with the new name, you will update your name everywhere you had your old name: DMV, SSA, Banks. Some places will take just your marriage certificate, others will ask for an ID before updating the name.

Thank you! My American friends told me they changed their documents immediately right after marriage that’s why I got confused. But of course that’s totally different case!

If you applied for your EAD in your married name then you'll get it in your married name. Then you take the EAD and your marriage license to all the places where you need to change the name. Bank, DMV, SSA...

    Thank you so much!

  3. Hi! I got married US citizen and applied for my gc using his last name (can’t imagine living in the States with my unusual last name, gosh). Since I’ve been to the US before, I don’t know if I need to change my last name in my SSN and bank account right now. It’s kinda weird to go to the bank later with mismatching ID even if they would be able to change it. I called SSA and they said I better wait for my green card but because my visa expired (what). Also, once I receive my EAD I guess for my new name (I am not sure, I applied with my husbands name as I used it in all another forms, but I have a feeling I might get it with my maiden cause it’s easier), how would I get a job with ID for my maiden name (not sure if they need it), EAD for my new and SSN for my...? Please, anyone who had dealt with that...any tips?

    thank you🌸

  4. Hi all!

i got married in a few weeks ago and my docs are almost ready to be sent to USCIS. My one year j1 student exchange visa expires in a few days. We live in small village in the middle of nowhere😂

I have a few questions and I know 99% people would advise to quit, be safe and tell me that a I am not allowed working. I am about to quit! But in my case it’s little more complicated:

    1. During covid my host company laid everyone off and I am working in he store now what has offices all around the states. Surprisingly the store wanna keep me working but I think I would have big problems once immigration finds out that I am working after my visa expired. Especially if I indicated that job in all my forms, attached paystubs etc. I am quitting but they ask if I can work a little more since they are really busy.

    2. I got a job a few weeks ago in small restaurant (they don’t have offices anywhere else) but I think I better quit there too. I am sure there is a way to find out about it as well. I am supposed to get direct deposit (can change for paychecks) and I am paying taxes but still.

    3. My host company (!!!) (big company, there is no way to work there after your visa expires) is asking me when I can go back since they know about my marriage! They are saying once I bring them my marriage certificate and doc that comfirms that I applied (only applied!) for gc I would be fine. Hmmmm. Does it work like that? Would I still have issues once immigration knows about it?

    4. Today is the last day when I can extend my j1 for two more months because of covid. It’s expensive and would it look weird since I got married and about to send my docs?

please if anyone has kinda the same experience and has gone through the same stuff dm me or answer here! Please don’t tell me million times I better be safe/I wasn’t allowed to work for another company. I know that and I actually told my employers about my situation. I didn’t violate anything and not going to. Just asking basically for my employers. And of course if there is a way to work without law violations I would love to!

You’re welcome. I don’t know which state you’re in but here it NYC it’s $100 each plus 10 business days to have your credentials evaluated. Of course they have an expedited process ranging between $50 and $175 depending on how soon you want to have it but this is in addition to the initial $100 a piece 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️. Good luck. Just evaluate the most recent certificate.. e.g, Evaluate the masters and not the bachelors unless you have money to burn 🤷🏾‍♀️

Hopefully you are right, nobody wants spend more money😂 However, I have different bachelors and masters, why do you think they need only last one?

I get that logic but it says any education should be evaluated. Also, I am not sure if I am Bachelor of Arts, laws, or science what I need to indicate in i944, and only evaluation can help me to answer😐

  6. Hi! I have a question for everyone who filed i765 work authorization form adjusting from j1 status through marriage. I am not a subject of two year rule what means I can get married here, stay, and apply for work permit as well. The only thing is in form i765 question 27 I can’t find any eligible category for myself. I am still j1 intern. There is nothing like that if you go to the instruction to the form i765 and try to find an answer for who is eligible to file i765. I know for sure I need to fill that form. Should I indicate (c)(9)?

No. Just like @Ayrton explained that's what the previous names section is for. So that everybody knows how to link the names in case you have documents in other names like your maiden name.

Thank you! I got it but then I have another question. I am sorry, I am still a little confused or maybe I am just dumb. Since it’s okay to have i693 with my maiden name, the forms like i131, i765 (except i485 where I would put my new last name) still should be on my maiden name?

  8. Hi everyone! So as I understand to change my last name for husbands I need to use my husband last name on all the forms as my own last name and indicate my maiden last name when they ask if I had any another last name before. Got it. The problem is I already started my paperwork, and got a medical examination what wasn’t cheap, and filled I-693 not indicating my husbands last name as mine anywhere at all. For now I am waiting to get an envelope with the form and results what I can’t open. I didn’t fill and didn’t send anything to USCIS  yet. I guess it’s too late to change my last name since I don’t wanna pay for medical exam again...?
