  1. My wife came here under a K-1 visa. We have the Perm Resident Interview on 13 November. She had the required Medical Exam and Immunizations for the K-1 while in Honduras less than a year ago. My Notice of Action for the interview says to bring a completed medical examination (From I-693) and Vaccination Supplement in a sealed envelope (unless already submitted).

In addition, it is asking for the Affidavit of Support I-864 again unless already submitted.

Anyone help me with what we need to do?

  2. IT takes 2 weeks or more for USCIS to update the database that SSA officer uses to confirm a person's immigrations status.

You have SSN, and you have EAD no need to change the SS Card until after getting the Green-card.

Now you will have to wait for SSA to confirm immigrations status and send out a new card.

You can still get a job using the EAD, and if you know the number that was on the card you can provide that number for the employer, and tell them that the card is in the process of being replaced.

Most states DMV require to see the SS Card.

THANKS YuandDan DMV also said that the SSN card needed to be in her new maried name and not her maiden name or they would or could not issue a Drivers License. Also kind of sucks, because most jobs want to see a drivers license.

Why do you think SSA needed to confirm with USCIS when I had the Authorization for Employment card with me?

  3. Received notice today for the AOS interview and that it is scheduled for 13 Nov. Think it is odd that they also want to interview the girls, ages 8 and 10. I must admit I am a little overwhelmed looking at all the stuff I must bring to the interview. I am also worried that the only thing we have in both our names is 1 vehicle. I plan to add her to my bank within a week. She has only been here since 25 May. Just nervous.

  4. A long story short: My wife came here on a K-1. After we got married we went to the local SSA office and had a heck of a time getting her a SSN and card. Eventually we managed to get he a SSN and card but it was in her maiden name.

We received her authorization for Employment form USCIS and yesterday we went back to the SSA office to get her name changed on her SSN card.

The lady at the SSA office tore up her SSN card and said there was some type of name problem between SSA and USCIS. She gave us a letter saying that they needed to verify the authenticity of the documents I brought with me and it could take up to 4 weeks to get a new card, if we get a card at all.

( I brought her passport/visa, Authorization for Employment Card from USCIS, Military Dependant ID Card, Marriage Certificate, etc).

I called the SSA and go thte typical B.S. you get when you call a GOV agency.

We then headed over to the MVD/DMV to get her Drivers License. They wouldn't give her one because she did not have her SSN card.

I am on the verge of suing the SSA.

  5. My wife had her Biometrics appointment a couple days ago. The Biometrics was for her AOS & the EAD. They didn't let me go in the back with her so I am not sure what to expect next. Does something get mailed to her saying she has authorization to work? (They did give us a stamped receipt)

On a side note. She also has a SSN with the funny little statement on it saying something about having permission to work with Homeland Security's approval.

  6. I think if it was me, I would gather as much proof as possible that shows that there is a relationship and contact my congressman for help. Not sure if that is the correct answer. When my finacee had her interview I went with her. I was in the room with her and was told I was not authorized to speak or comment. However, I was asked many questions from the person conducting the interview. They first asked my finacee questions in Spanish then pretty much asked me the same questions in English. I guess they assumed I could not speak Spanish. They asked her some really insane questions to include "What is my dogs name?" Even after all the questions be answered correctly, the interviewer was not convinced that her daughters were really hers and that perhaps we were trying to sneak a child in to the USA. We had all the birth certificates and supporting paperwork but the interviewer wanted to see photos of her and the girls together with the girls growing up together. We were told that she could simply return anytime with the photos and show them to the interviewer. We sped across town and got the photo albums and returned to the embassy. The Honduras guards would not allow us access in to the embassy/refused me access to my own embassy. I had to go around to the side of the embassy and talk to a U.S. Marine on duty and get my photos to the interviewer that way. I then contacted my congressman. The next day we received a call from the embassy saying all was approved and that we needed to come back and pick up the visas, etc. We arrived and checked in and they told us to take a seat. They called everyones names but my finacees and then they closed the blinds and turned off the lights. I ran up to the customer service windows and knocked. No one came. Luckily, the ambassador of the embassy was walking by and helped me and it was all ok from there.

  7. I was looking at a lot of time lines and I think it appears that most of you get a NOA. Notice of Approval? before you get a notice for the Biometrics appointment date. So far on the AOS process I received:

    GREEN RECEIPT FROM USPS

RECEIPTS THAT THE 485'S WERE RECEIVED.

RECEIPT THAT THE EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION WAS RECEIVED.

NOTICE FOR THE BIOMETRICS APPOINTMENT DATE.

Oh and of course the $1,385 worth of checks were cashed.

Am I missing something? Also, what is the next step after the Biometrics appointment, other than receiving approval for employment authorization?

  8. Just curious if it is necessary to send my actual original birth certificate to my fiancee who will be interviewing at the US embassy in Tokyo in the near future. Or will a copy of front and back suffice? Much thanks to any help in advance! Best of luck to all of you!

    Andrew

I had to have my original for the interview. Made me very nervous. I went to the interview and got it back.

  9. It is possible to get a military ID card without a SSN (I got one for Marlene before she had an SSN). But, Tricare (the military health care plan) will only cover a dependent for an initial 90 days without a SSN. In this case, the OP needs the SSN to qualify his children for health care. The EAD is the only route to do that before they get their LPR cards. The price of an EAD is well worth the ability to be covered for health care.

Yes, that is why I said I needed it for the military ID's and also for Tricare. The base only gave my wife and the girls ID cards for 90 days and said I need to get SSN's.

They are 8 and 10 ... Have them sign the block--or print if need be... and then you can sign above it "For <name of child> <your signature>"

Thanks. I redid the form last night and had them sign and I signed as the person preparing the form. Do you think me or thier mother needs to sign in the block above their name? Also, USCIS returned the checks with the package. Do I need to write new checks or do you think the old ones are ok.

Just curios. I can see on your timeline that you have recieved a SSN number before filing for AOS. How is that possible?

My wife came here under a K-1 visa. We went to the SSA Office with her visa, passport, I-94, and the application form for a SSN. I posted a bunch of info about SSN's about a week ago on here in the AOS forum. Please check it out.

  12. Why would a 10 year old and an 8 year old need a SS number? Can't you just wait until they have their green cards?

Causes Tax problems if they don't have SSN's. Also, I am retired military and the military requires that hey have SSN's for thier ID cards. I think it is just about impossible to function in the USA without a SSN.
