  1. bmadeline,

Thanks!! Again, very helpful! One more question. Do all the police certificates need to be done in Lima? My fiance is from Huaraz (Ancash) and he says there are INPE and Ministerio del Publico offices in the department. Can he get it there instead of making an 8 hour bus trip to Lima?

Is it true that after you are issued the visa you have to pay $30 to get it stamped in your passport?

Congrats on your marriage!!!! I hope to be married by the end of the year!

    Hi

I'm not sure about whether or not they have to be done in Lima, because my husband and I were living in Lima so we had to do them there.

I think one of them, if I'm not mistaken its the one you get from the actual police, has to be done everywhere he has lived since turning 16, so i guess that means getting one from ancash, and anywhere else he has lived. def. the antecedentes judiciales (a nivel nacional) HAS to be done in Lima.

I'd have him call the consulate to be sure, but he is going to have to go to Lima at some point for other paperwork, like authenticating his out-of-lima birth certificate, so he might as well do them there just to be sure.

call the consulate. i would hate to give you bad advice.

  2. try in a different county. i just read an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, yeah i know, its a different state, that was saying that a K-1 was turned down for his marriage license for the same reason, and they had to do a cheesy wedding in vegas. when they got home, they learned that they only had to go to the next county over because that was the only particular county that thought they were following federal law. It depends on how each county interprets the law previously posted about using the SSN to track people who are supposed to pay child suupport.

call around to licensing places in different counties, that way you can still have your ceremony in the same state.

i just got married on thursday in Washington State, and no SSN for my husband either.

  3. i downloaded all of the AOS forms from VJ, but then when I opened them, they had some odd characters

ex. I-485, part 2 reads: Part 2. ÊÊÊ Application type.Ê(Check one) <-where it says (Check .. is superimposed on the last Ê character)

so i downloaded them again from the USCIS website, and its the same deal. Can someone check them to see if its just my computer, and I should find somewhere else to download them, or if they are indeed funky forms?

I don't want to turn in weird forms- would that create a problem in my packet?

dont want any RFEs or rejected apps...

should I go ahead and fill them out anyway?

    :help:

    similar problem with I-131

    g-325a is fine

    I-765 is fine

    I-864 is fine

  4. OUt of curiosity, has anyone noticed people seem to have different personalities when they speak in different languages? My husband fluently speaks 4 languages, and I swear he is a different person in each!

i speak spanish and english, and i have been told that in spanish I am sweet and nurturing, and in english I am sarcastic and the tone of my voice is lower... i wonder how that works.

  5. i have carefully read the guides, but I still have an advanced parole question.

once your advanced parole is approved, how many times can you re-enter the US?

My husband would like to go see his family in Peru sometime in november, and my family is doing a habitat for humanity trip in December in Mexico. Does advanced parole give you unlimited re-entry, or is it a one time deal?

  6. Hi

My new husband and I just got married yesterday, and now we are going to start the AOS process.

We had used a lawyer for the 129-F, and I was very pleased at how quickly our case moved (NOA1-Visa granted, 4.5 months) and suspect that had much to do with the fact that we had a lawyer. I also suspect, however, that he greatly overcharged us, and am wondering if anyone has experience with immigration lawyers and could tell me, more or less, how much is a fair fee to charge for the AOS, apart from filing fees which are now $1010. Also, is hiring a lawyer going to make my process go faster in this arena as well? I suppose just the fact that there are not likely to be RFEs make it go a lot faster.

Second, I was reading the guide for getting a SSN, and it says that you have to have a valid non-work reason to apply for a number, but it doesnt say what that could include. My husband wants his so that we can apply for a joint checking account, as i have tried at several banks, and no one will let him add his name to my account without a SSN. I have read in other threads that there are some banks, like Bank of America that can, but I havent been so lucky. Is that a valid non work reason? Also, one of the forms of identification needed for applying for a SSN is a US passport/license/id card, but we cant seem to get one of those without a SSN. What am I missing here? It seems like a crazy vicious cycle, you need A, but in order to get A, you need B, the only way to get B, is if you have A. Am I not understanding this right?

Lastly, Where do I find out what is his Alien Reg Number, or if he has one?

Thanks sooo much, this is all so confusing. And I thought just getting the Visa was the hardest part... Thank goodness for VJ...

  7. hi lindsey and koki

the birth cert only needs to be stamped by reniec if it is from outside of lima. for example angel was born in abancay, so even though his birth cert said reniec on in, we still had to take it to reniec in lima to get it 'authenticated' which means they have to look at the city registrar's signiture and deem that it is authentic, then they stamp it and you are good to go.

if he was born in lima, and the birth cert is from reniec lima, you dont have to do that.

also, this can only be done at the central reniec in centro de lima, on jr cuzco, right off of abancay behind the poder judicial. we had waited in line for 4 hours at reniec in san juan de miraflores after being told we could do it there, only to get up to the window and be sent to the cetro de lima reniec. so just because its in lima doesnt make it the official reniec.

    just more hoops...

i translated his birth cert, but they didnt need it, and we didnt have anything else translated.

that should be it, other than the physical medical results, evidence of your relationship and his financial papers.

if you are using an affadavit of support (i-134) you will need your last 3 years of tax returns plus any pertinant banking/stock/real estate information. i know that my income alone (non-existant, as i am a student) would not have sufficed, so my parents also submitted all of their financial info and they filled out an affadavit as well.

let me know if you have any other questions!

we got married yesterday. just hang in there, things will be ok. you guys are in the hardest part right now.

    good luck!

  8. So then I should assume that I dont need to have a copy of his medical, as it was in a sealed envelope and then taken by POE officer, thereby never giving me a chance to make a copy.

So then why did POE officer tell me there was someone I could contact to get his Birth Cert? Just another uninformed officer?

You may try filing form G-884 for the birth cert, but good luck.

    Thank you, I'll try that.

  9. hi, we are just about to start AOS and I don't know where I can get ahold of my fiance's original K1 packet.. the one in the mysterious brown envelope we turned in at POE. Where does that go? We turned it in in Houston and are now in Tacoma, Washington. Specifically, I would like his birth certificate back. When I asked for it at the Embassy, they told me to ask for it at POE, and POE said they were not authorized to change it for a photocopy. Are there other things I need, such as his medical report, that I should request? Where can I request those documents?

    Thanks!

(I know, we need to be married and have the cert. before we can start AOS. )

  10. My fiancee got a police report done in here city about 1 1/2 hour flight north of Lima, when we have the interview date will she need a new one done from here city and/or in Lima? Also what about a medical exam I have been hearing about. I know we have few months to go but I was just curious. Thanks.

You may or may not need a new police certifcate. It depends how long its valid for and when you will likely have your interview. Normally police certificates are valid for 3 to 6 months.

With packet 3, you should get a list of doctors were your fiancee will have her medical at. You will schedule it or the embassy will. But you have to have the medical completed before a visa can be granted. You may only be able to get the medical scheduled once you have packet 3.

OK, Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it.

the police report in peru is good for 3 months. when you make the doctors appt, dont use dr. oscar situ. we had a bad experience with him. lima consulate issues a packet 3 and 4 together, so you will know your interview date as soon as she gets the packet. good luck!

  11. in the packet 3-4 from the lima consulate, i havent seen anything about biometrics.. when we got the police certificate, they took his fingerprints and dental records etc but they dont give those to you. are we going to have to get biometrics done before the interview, when and where?

we have 10 days until our interview and i am getting nervous about the details..

K1s have a medical exam before the interview. Biometrics are for AOS in the US.

p.s. they took DENTAL records? Very strange.

    YES

WE JUST HAD TO DO THE MEDICAL EXAM

THE BIOMETRICS IS FOR THE USA

    AS I UNDERSTAND

thank you so much, i was really getting concerned about that..

yeah dental records.. i thought that was odd.

  12. So in the never ending quest for documents, i have been told at various govt agencies that i need to have certian forms LEGALIZED, such as the penal history, but others have told me that the particular document do not need to be legalized, like the police certificate. Of the three background certificates, judicial, penal, and police, which do i need to take to the ministerio de relaciones exteriores and have legalized? I asked when we picked up the judicial background certificate, but the guy at the window didnt know.

our interview is next monday, so i´ll be done asking questions for a while... until AOS...
