  1. Thanx Kathryn41. I anticipated to be sworn in in July or August. I didn't know it was going to be that early. In any case I have made the necessary contacts and would probably reschedule my oath date. Thanks to all VJs. Your contributions to cases on this has always been helpful. Long live VJ!

For those who have not yet had their interviews and know there will be a conflict with some of the dates shortly following the interview, tell your Interviewing Officer that you have potential conflicts on such and such dates and ask if they can schedule your ceremony around those times. Most of them have the flexibility at that time to do so.

If you have received an oath date and it conflicts with another commitment that you can't avoid, then contact USCIS. It is probably a good idea to contact them in writing, or else in person at an InfoPass (I don't like to rely on their phone service), explain the conflict (having to defend a thesis is an excellent reason to ask for a different date) and ask for a date after your defense date. Larger centers tend to have fairly regular oath ceremonies. Smaller ones don't have them as often so you do run the risk of having to wait for a while if you are associated with a smaller office/center.

It isn't a problem though, to request a reschedule - unlike requesting reschedules of interviews for immigration benefits. There is a lot more flexibility involved in the final stage of the process - citizenship.

Good luck on the thesis - and on the citizenship oath.

  4. Faith620, I have a plan. Can we swithc dates? I wish I were scheduled on your date? Oh, wishes, wishes, wishes! Just kidding! So long as we don't have controls over some of these issues, we are bound to be caught in the web with near-to-no solutions to get out of it. I wish we could also tell USCIS what we want, and someone would listen to us. Maybe some day.

I am afraid that I might end up in a similar situation. I just received my interview letter, and I'm scheduled for July 13. Then, for almost the entire month of August I will be out of state for work (can't really reschedule that). So, unless my oath is going to be scheduled end of July or in September, I am going to have to reschedule.

  5. haaaa! Thanx masterpiece. I hope if your cousins will not come empty-handed.lol! Anyways, you are right. "Life is one big road with lots of signs." I appreciate your compliments. Thanx again.

Okay! Okay!! so i love my Baby-back Ribs (yes..Prime!) and refused to break my nibbling motions to be out here to shout......

    ..........C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S!!!!!!

We go wash am ohhhh!!!!!! Oops i forgot..you are in the west coast...Argh! Anyway i could still send a cousin or two to represent me.

So the belated congratulatory message comes after my posting about your migraines? Life...one moment you are celebrating passing interview, the next its headache time. Say when do we pause to smell the roses, huh?

  6. Thanks to all for your inputs. Masterpiece, am not planning on travelling this year and I guess your antidotes have really worked. My headaches are lessened now;better than before, lol! Warlord, I agree with your submissions and I really have to pray that my final decision on this case would not make things complicated.HMM!

Well re-schedualing is simple, it's the part of never knowing how long after you will get your new oath date is the problem. Some people have gotten it pretty quickly and many others have waited months and even years to get their next date. Problem is, is that you go back into the system. You could get lost, you could be placed at the back of the line and if you are in a busy area, this could mean a much longer wait then others.

So really they say you should never reschedual it unless absolutely necessary. If you had a vacation planned (which most people seem to have issues with) then they made the mitake of planning that trip and most will say cancel the trip. In your case though, I don't know how easy it would be if at all it would be to re-schedual your thesis defence. You could try and ask if that is possible and bring some evidence as to why. They make be able to make some arrangements. Otherwise you definatly don't want to miss that either.

So if you can't reschedual the Thesis defence, I would take the risk and try and re-schedual the oath and pray that you don't get lost in the system, or put at the end of the queue or just get held in a holding tank for months and months later. Really though, it looks like that might have to be what you will need to do...

  7. My defense is on June 17th. I wish I could do that. I am planning on talking to my supervisor tomorrow and listen to what he says.Don't want to take chances. The more I think about this thing the more headaches I get.

I think that rescheduling the oath is not very difficult but from what I know is that we cannot tell them when we are next available... they will schedule you for the next oath date (depending on their loic?!?!?!)

When is it? can you reschedule your thesis defense?

  8. Hi Folks,

I write this letter with mixed feelings. My wife and I have worked very hard to enable me get through this citizenship stress. I got the letter today for my oath ceremony. Unfortunately, the day coincides with a day I am "billed" to defend my thesis. The letter indicates that I should inform USCIS as soon as possible if am not able to make it, and I will be rescheduled.

Is this case(rescheduling)common?Do you know anyone who has been in such a situation before? If so, how was this issue resolved? How soon can I be rescheduled? Can I propose my availability date to USCIS that fits into any of their ceremony times? I am indeed in a dilemma.OMG!

Your wonderful inputs are always welcome.

  9. In as much as they might admit your wife into the lobby, the interview is only you and IO in the latter's office. It is hardly she will be asked to join you in the interview room. But you never know. You may go with her. Good luck.

    Hi there everyone,

I need a little help with this question, I file in June for Naturalization, and I wanted to know if anyone knew who can attend the interview with me. Im not using a Lawyer this time round, so can it just be me, or does my Wife have to attend also like the first interview we had 3 years ago?

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  10. Thnx Long Ng. He briefly touched on my relationship and wanted to know if all is well which of course I answered yes. I told him my wife(in crutches, broke left-toe), mother and father in-laws were all sitting outside in the car waiting. He was particular about my tax transcript for 2009. This is because when applying for N-400 in February, my 2009 taxes were not ready. I gave him 2007-2009 but gave 2008 and 2007 back to me cos he already had those on file. He surprisingly asked if I lived in an apartment or a house. Well, I told him we live in a house and asked me to repeat the address which I did. He again asked about the number of people living in the house. I told him myself and wife and probed abt the number of bedrooms which I did answer. Upon a reflection, I remembered including a copy of our rental agreement with the application. So perhaps that is why he was quizzing to see if I knew wht am talking abt. Besides, he looked at my wife's passport and original birth certificate plus our marriage certificate. He also asked if I had had any previous marriage and kids from a previous marriage, which again the answer is no. He asked same about my wife which was also no.He kept my conditional green card since it expired and gave the current one back to me. He looked at my state ID card as well and gave that also back to me. He looked at my passport and asked if I had travelled outside the US which was also no. He made me sign the two passport pictures I sent with application earlier, and gave me a form to verify if to correct anything in connection to my name, date of birth, address and phone number. This information according to him will be same on my certificate.

    Now to the question of documents sent with application. The following were the docs I sent;

    1. Personal cheque for US $675.00

    2. Completed, signed and dated N-400 application form

    3. Photocopy of both sides of permanent resident card

    4. Two identical color passport size photographs

    5. Copy of spouse’s birth certificate

    6. Copy of spouse’s current passport(inside of front cover and signature page)

    7. Copy of current marriage certificate

    8. Copy of spouse’s vital records

    9. Copy of applicant’s vital records

    10. Copy of IRS tax transcripts (2007-2009)

    11. Form G-1145( E-Notification of Application/petition Acceptance

I hope this information helps.

Congratulation to you!!! i hope you will get the oath soon... Btw, i am going to apply this August based on the 3 year marriage rule. May i ask what evidence you turned in with your application? Also, did IO ask you anything about your marriage? Thanks for your time.

  11. Thax Wjinf for the information. Do not worry you will be fine.Good luck.

franklocks, congratulations on your successful N400 interview! I have mine scheduled for the SF office on the 16th; here's hoping that I get a nice officer as well. My AOS interview in SF was not that great (though we ultimately passed). I found this information from both the Paramount theater (Oakland) website and the SF Masonic Auditorium websites for oath ceremony dates -

Then in Sept - seems that they're temporarily back in SF at the Masonic Auditorium:

9/9/2010 Thurs 2:00 PM Homeland Security-Swearing in Ceremony 9/21/2010 Thurs 2:00 PM Homeland Security-Swearing in Ceremony

  12. I agree with everything that had earlier been said. I applied for citizenship in February and had my interview in May. So it really depends though on many factors as said already. I am applying through marriage. Good luck.

If I go back to the time when I asked my wife to marry me then we started all this immigration stuff I never even heard of, it took close to five years before she became a USCIS.

  13. Thanks for for your well-wishes. V333k, when the IO pulled this paper for me to review my name, date of birth and fon number, and said this is the information which are going to be on your certificate, I was so happy within cos I thought I was to have same day oath ceremony; only to be told I would receive the later and sooner. But how much later or sooner, you are invited to be my guest.lol! I hope it doesnt take that long though. Yes I have to travel 6hrs down south and same distance back for the oath ceremony. This is what we are fighting for so we will cross our fingers and wait patiently for USCIS. Our time will definitely come.

To my fellow friends here, once again, VJ contributors as well as study tools and guide here are invaluable. Make use of every information here is and fish out those that are similar to your case and you will be fine.long live VJ!

Ouch... 12 hours??? For the Oath, you may have to end up in San Fransisco again..... I wish they just gave you an interview date on the same day as an Oath day just finished with your process.

Congratulations on passing the interview....

  14. Hi Folks,

Thank God for travelling mercies. I had to travel a total of about 12hours to and fro to attend my interview. All went well. Interviewed with one of the nicest IOs, down-to-earth and very friendly. My interview was scheduled at midday pacific time the Sansome office in San Francisco. Got there 15 minutes to time and checked in and was given passport forms by the receptionist.Geez! was that a good sign? Time will tell.lol! I was asked to have a seat in section C. This section was virtually empty. It took some 5 minutes or so to be called for the interview. Indeed, the IO came out from his office to lead me back to his office. Whiles on the way, he asked about my wife and I said she was outside in the car. I told him she did not come in because the appointment letter did not encourage applicants bringing in others. I requested to produce my wife in the next second but he laughed it off.

    IN THE OFFICE:

    He swore me in and asked me to take my seat. he took me through my form N-400(submitted.)After he had satisfied himself with my submissions in relation to form N-400, he proceeded to ask the following questions(the are not in order) for the history test;

    1. What is the name of the national anthem?

    2. Why does the flag have 50 stars?

    3. Why does the flag have 13 stripes?

    4. What ocean is on the East Coast of the United States?

    5. When must all men register for selective service?

    6. How old do citizens have to be to vote for President?

    For the English test, he asked me to read;

    "Which state is the largest?"

and was asked to write "Alaska is the largest state."

He told me I had passed and congratulated me and asked if I had any documents for him. I gave him everything I had already submitted with my previous application. Interestingly, he told me he had all those docs already except my teacher credentialing renewal notice. He took a copy of it, and the story ended. He gave me N-652, Naturalization Interview Results notice. His last name was on it and checked marks indicating I have passed the tests of English and U.S history and government. Below the notice, was also a checked portion which read "Congratulations! Your application has been recommended for approval. At this time, it appears that you have established your eligibility for naturalization. If final approval is granted, you will be notified when and where to report for the Oath Ceremony."

Well, he confided in me that I will recieve my notice for the oath ceremony soon. So folks, this is my story. I hope this might help others. My application is based on 3-year marriage. Thanks to VJ contributors. Your valuable input on this thread has been very very helpful. I am grateful. Long live VJ!

  15. To be on the safer side, I would recommend that you take both state and fed taxes with you. You never know. It might depend on the IO who interviews you. Some go for the interview and are never asked, although they are requested to bring that along to the interview. I'm not too sure about the pictures. Someone may have an input here. What am sure of is the 2 passport size pictures when sending out the N-400 application and additional 2 pictures when appearing for the interview.

    Good luck!

  16. Thanks Chazzie for the detail information posted. It is indeed a wealth of information well acknowledged. On the low note, just relax and be glad that the journey is almost over, at least with USCIS. Your oath ceremony is just around the corner. Congratulations!

Thanx! Prince and Princess and little princess!

I went for my interview (9:45am)this morning and i passed! ^_^ Im down to the last step now. They said they will notify me within 30 days reagrding sched of the oath taking ceremony.

    Here's my detailed experience.

I arrived @ 630 Sansome st, SF at 9am and found City Park Garage (475 Sansome St)walking distance from the Fed building. They will ask for a Photo ID card and appointment letter before they let you in.They'll ask if you have a camera phone (i left mine in the car, less hassle). You have to go through security then proceed to 2nd floor Reception Area. They will take your appointment letter @ the reception desk and will ask you to sit and wait for your name to be called. You have to atleast be there 30 minutes before your sched appointment so u get to familliarize with your surroundings. They called my name @ 9:30am and was ask to sworn in to tell the truth. The interviewer asked me to present needed docs (green card, State ID card, passports~old and new~)She asked me to sign the pictures i sent in and then She asked about all the info i wrote on my application. She asked me 10 questions.

What is the US National Anthem?

    What does 13 stripes represent?

How old do u have to be to vote?

What is the rule of law?

    Who vetoes bills?

    Name one branch of government.

What ocean is on the west side of US?

What is the capital of US?

How many voting members does the House of Rep have?

    Name 1 original Colony

I answered them all correctly.:)and then she asked me to read "How many Senators do we have?", and i answered 100.& she goes u dont even have to answer that, then she smiled.(lol) :bonk: and then she asked me to write down "We have one hundred senators."and i did.And then she handed me a piece of paper and said we're all done , do you have any questions?i said none and thank her.^_^ I read the paper she gave me and the sentence where in it says "You passed the english , US history and government test" was checked. And also "Congratulations! your application has been sent for approval. If Final approval is granted you will be sent a notification where to appear for Oath Ceremony " was checked.

    * Since Sf has the most number of Citizenship applicants they dont do same day oath, and FYI future Oath Ceremonies from March till Aug 2010 will be conducted at Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway, Oakland CA).I hope my detailed experience helps.Good luck everyone!Phew, now i can change my audio cd reviewer that ive been playing in the car for a month. :D

  17. The yellow letter I had requested me to bring utility bills and mortgage payment receipts to the interview. i thought that was weird cos I had already included that in my N-400 application package. I now have another job of having to dig for more receipts. Anyways, I can't complain. The journey will be over soon. Well, you are fortunate if you did not have one.

I did not receive any letter other than NOA. What is yellow letter ?

  18. If driver's license may not be 'useful', the question still remains as to what docs should one carry on him/her to prove identity when necessary(after naturalization)?

A drivers license doesnt mean you are a citizen but it does mean you have legal resident status if its issued in Az. You are probably aware of the potential new law that will be enacted if the bill is signed in the next few days By Brewer. This law will allow any police agency to inquire about a persons status for the first time if they have reason to believe someone has broken a law. If questioned people will need to produce some document proving their legal status.

  19. Thanks to everybody for your input. This is the reason why this thread is so invaluable. I have had great #######-bits throughout my journey with USCIS up till now. Long-live VJ!

My citizenship interview is tommorow @ 9:45am here in SF, i would love a same day oath so it will save me time receiving my certificate and petitioning my fiance (L).I can ask them after my interview and then i'll keep u updated. (That's if, i'll pass)

  20. Hi Folks,

Can anyone tell if the San Francisco office offers same-day oath service? I am asking because I live 7-hrs drive from this local office and it would be a burden if I had go back on a later date for my oath ceremeony after my interview date. I would wish it is done same after interview and am successful. Your inputs are always welcome.
